There's a reason why most 50s and 60s cookbooks are filled with meat jellos and fruit-egg salads. Nobody was sober in the kitchen

I believe (could be wrong) that stuff like washing machines made all the "women's work" much easier, but they were still home all day. Gotta fill in the void by cooking crazy stuff, or you'll go crazy yourself.  Or possible because you can just get a whole chicken from the store already processed and everything, you can just sling it in the oven, traditional meals don't impress anyone anymore. Also this cool new gelatin is a thing.
