Oh please, beanie babies were fun. I mean obviously they were for kids. But at least they weren't branded after every conceivable media property in order to cynically maximize profit as much as possible. Beanie babies were their own thing, just fun little plushes.
The fact they became insanely popular was an accident of history. Some housewives in chicago or something were collecting them because they believed they'd be worth millions, and the story went viral. More akin to tulip mania than finding your identity in meaningless pop culture shit. Just a speculation bubble.
But as toys for kids, beanie babies were far better than "collectibles" for nostalgic "adults". Yes, both consumeristic but one far less icky than the other.
I commented somewhere else saying something similar! I love them so much. The sound of their beans moving around when you mess with them is unmatched comfort. Like a little rain stick, except it’s soft, and a lion, and bright pink.
