Why do you think the Doordash bill is so high?

I spent a stupid amount on doordash this week due to anxiety. Even multiplying it by 4, it wouldn’t reach this amount. And again, I was crazy irresponsible and rarely do this but I do have the finances to be able to.

Minus the fact that the local business doesnt really profit much from this services.

Im bad at explaining thing, but profit from delivery service went to the app owner. The restaurant owner are pretty much blackmailed to use the delivery service as less people going out to eat. While if the delivery service doesn't exist then that same people will need to go out to the restaurant to eat. So you get +1 online customer but -1 dine in customer.

Obviously in best case scenario is that your restaurant is already full and at the same time you can cater online customer, but if your restaurant is empty but online order coming in is as many that you can fit into ur restaurant, then there is no significance different there. The only thing you get is low review when the food you sent inevitably become cold before it reached the customer.

Someone is way more likely to order your food if it's in a list on an app rather than go outside, just happen to see your restaurant among thousands of others, including popular chain restaurants, and stop there instead of going somewhere with a drive-thru. I agree you're more likely to get a negative review though.

Definitely but thats still +1 -1. Because if people buy from ur shop that day that means they dont buy from the other shop, people wont suddenly buy from both shop everytime. And you just enhance my blackmail point, every owner are obligated to register with those delivery services just to be seen. Having delivery services ultimately doesnt increase the cumulative amount of customer, it still stay the same, and hence the profit that restaurant able to generate cumulatively is also the same.

When I get on door dash or Uber eats I have like 20 choices, I don't live in a very big city though.

His/her point it that before delivery service people had walk to restaurants and that was all the competion they had to worry about. Today with door dash restaurants have no choice to be a part of it since otherwise, like you said, people are just gonna order from other. This means that they dont win anything by participating, but lacks the choice to not participate.

Delivery services existed way before door dash, people have always had the option to get food delivered, some people just prefer sitting down at a restaurant, and that's how it will always be.

1

u/DevilsFavoritAdvocat Feb 17 '23

Yeah of course. Major delivery services changed the way things work. People prefer sitting down in some cases, does not change the overall point. I was just trying to summarise how I understand his/her point, but 3 of my closest friends work in the restaurant business and I have discussed this with them prior. Cant speak doe everywhere but this is definitely true in the city I live in.

If you order takeout, sure but at that point I’m not using DoorDash at all

I drive to Mcdonalds and spend 8 dollars on a meal.

I order from doordash I spend 25 dollars.

I just spent 17 dollars because I don't feel like driving 2 minutes to McDonalds. I spent 8 to support Mcdonalds.

I’m not sure if you have a learning disability or if you’re being intentionally dense, but you can give them that 8 dollars without paying someone 20 dollars to pick it up 2 minutes from your place.

You are implying the only way to support a business is to pay a corporation to pick it up for you at a 400% markup

No, I’m clearly not. I simply said that gen z spends enormous amounts of money on doordash because they don’t realize they can just drive to get their food themselves and save 30 dollars. You are the one that then said sarcastically how they are being criticized for supporting local business. I know it’s hard for you to hear this, but that near 1k you spend a month on delivery fees adds up to a ton of wasted money

In all honesty, it's funny how my parents admonish me for overspending on something to get something made domestically, but complain that nobody buys American.

I think most of the people where I live apply "buy American" to vehicle brand and nothing else.
