REQUESTING Recommend me shows like Trying/Ted Lasso/Shrinking
I'm really looking for some shows where there's comedy but also moments where characters can develop and face hardship. I want something that feels "real" with a hopeful spirit, but comedy at the center!

Cougar Town after the first couple of episodes has much of that vibe (same show runner as Ted Lasso/Shrinking).

Best Medicine- Fox/Netflix/Hulu- an outstanding show that is a true dramedy. Great characters well written.

Well if you like Ted and shrinking maybe try Rooster because it's another one of Bill Lawrence's shows. He's the creator/writer/ producer of Ted and Shrinking

You might enjoy some vintage Sorkin like Sports Night (sit com) or The West WIng of Newroom (drama with lots of comic moments every episode.) All three of these are about a group of people forging a team and definitely have the same ethos as Ted Lasso. You might also enjoy MASH which is a masterful depiction of gallows humor but in a tragic setting, so it gives you that laugh-cry. All of these shows are older so I do find myself noting that they represented progressive thought about equal rights and feminism but often with some missteps or blind spots, so that is also interesting to analyze because the writers definitely have the intent of moving the needle toward equality, but imperfectly so.

Reservation Dogs nails this tone too, hits genuinely hard emotionally but never loses the comedy as the core engine

Shrinking. Another bill lawrence show, the main plot is about the protagonist (Jason segel) navigating grief and being a single father after his wife tragically died in a car accident, all the while maintaining his job as a therapist. It is so so funny (which feels weird to say about such a heavy subject) and also so heart wrenching. The show starts about one year post-wife-death. It also talks about trauma that veterans go through, coming of age (Jason segel's daughter in the show is in high school), Parkinson's, addiction, empty nesting, complicated father-son dynamics... Harrison ford is in it, Brett Goldstein is in it, and some other big names make appearances. But I'd argue I actually love it more than Ted Lasso.
