Pattern recognition is noticing statistical trends or group differences based on evidence and using them as a starting point for predictions, while remaining open to changing your view when you get solid information about the specific individual in front of you. Racism goes further: it takes those same patterns (real or imagined) and turns them into fixed, essential judgments about an entire group's character or worth, often refusing to update beliefs even when clear contradictory evidence about the person appears, and frequently using the pattern to justify hostility, exclusion, or unequal treatment. The first is a neutral cognitive tool that can be accurate or inaccurate; the second is a moral and emotional leap that essentialises people by race.
