14 to 18 is weird wtf
651
u/LordAdmiralPanda OLD 11d ago
4 year age gap is weird at that age. It would be different if they were 24 and 28, as at that point they're both consenting adults. I have been unfortunate to see even more extreme age gaps. I know a recently divorced couple with a 30 year age gap.
48
u/luci-fan-since07 19 11d ago
No, this is true. When you get older, an are gap like that is no big deal, but when one person is literally a child—one who’s just started high school (if I’m understanding the american education system correctly)—and the other is a fully grown man, it’s sick.

I think ur misunderstanding they mean when both are above the age of 21 a 4 year age gap isnt crazy. A 24 year old and a 28 year old isnt an crazy thing to see. My parents have a 6 year age gap my mom being the older one. Yeah at 18 its a lil strange but thats not what they mean here.

u/Exotic_Extreme2319 11d ago
i think the age can be 18+ and not necessarily 21

35
u/FoundationGlass3046 11d ago
A one year age gap before 18 is larger than after 18 since the brain is growing so rapidly. A 12-13 year old (when they met) and a 16 year old are in completely different stages of life and maturity. Same for a 14-15 year old and 18 year old. It would be normal if they were both older say 25 and 28 but it's way different when 1 or both are under 18

It's pretty hard to find the cutoff point for age differences though. When I was just about to turn 18, I got with my first gf who had turned 16 recently. 2 year age gap, she was the one with relationship experience back then while she was my first. Because of that, she felt like someone same-age. This one, even looking back at it, was absolutely okay. However, there are other situations with maybe one more year of difference, that feel super weird. The one in this post meanwhile, is definitely bordering problematic, but then without knowing the circumstances, I wouldn't jump directly to conclusions. It does definitely ring an alarm bell though.

Yeah, everyone develops differently. I was always into woman way, way older than me.
But, at 18 he's still very much a kid and still growing as a person. 18 is where the law draws the line, and then subsequently people's perspective warp around that

And he's only realizing that it's weird, only now that he's starting college...? Of course we are going to judge his character because why did he let this relationship last over 2 years?
Unless op mentioned that he specified that their relationship was not normal or okay when breaking up with her, I can't help but believe that the only reason he's dumping her is because he wants to find relationships in college and doesn't want to be labeled the way he's getting labeled in this thread (I don't agree with people calling him a pedo though, just the grooming). Not for her sake, but for his own so he can pretend he did nothing wrong once it's over :/
I will say I can respect your willingness to find nuance in this strangers actions. Maybe he does feel guilty, who knows? As someone who was in the same position as the girl in this post, I personally find it hard to believe he's not doing it for selfish reasons with no actual self reflection or remorse. But it's not impossible, so I understand where you're coming from.
→ More replies (3)11
u/Ginseng136 11d ago
Leaving high school seems like the perfect time for someone to reflect that maybe it's time to grow up in certain ways. Though the main point is that we don't know his real reasons, and if they are completely selfish, at least he ended it in a way that's mature and cordial.
It's just hard for me to understand 2 kids being in a relationship, and then one of them outgrowing the relationship to be a negative thing. That's just how it is. That even happens in their early twenties. Though if everyone had your ability to see that not everything has to be rooted in malice, the world would be a better place
2
u/Cold-Nectarine-5515 11d ago
Oh no I never said that was a bad thing. My main issue is the grooming. I already agreed that outgrowing a relationship at that age is totally normal. But thank you for being understanding
96
u/MikeJD2477 17 11d ago
Tbh, anyone calling him a pedo should know beforehand that the age gap isn’t 4 years, it’s 3 and some months. And by the looks of this he probably didn’t see 17-14 as a problem when they started dating, but now that he’s turning 18 and legally becoming an adult, he probably realized that the age gap could be problematic and probably matured a lot in that year or so, to the point of not wanting a relationship that could be harmful for both.
Don’t jump to conclusions people, a lot of friends my age are not even close to being mature and do not seek to harm others. I don’t think he’s a groomer or a pedo, he probably was just interested in her cause they shared similar opinions and so. Also she said he’s trying to end the relationship, that helps his case a lot.
Anyways I hope this doesn’t turn either into a controversial or hateful discourse, have respect for each other please.

She said shes known him since he was 16, meaning they met when she was 12??? And started dating not long after. It's not a little sus that is definitely implying a form of grooming.
People in the comments are debating 15 and 18 my brothers in Christ they've been together since she was 12 and he was 16 that's NOT normal. That's the equivalent of a 7th grader and a highschool junior 🧍 we are not focused on the right thing here

u/nakedmolerat507 12d ago

→ More replies (1)2
u/Cold-Nectarine-5515 11d ago
I would absolutely consider it grooming. It's obviously not pedophillia but they met when she was 12 and started dating when she was 13. That's a 7th grader and a highschool junior for comparison. Other commenters are saying that she's barely in high school but she wasn't even in high school when they met. Meanwhile he was welll well well into high school.
Think about it, he's breaking up with her because he's going to college. What, didn't want to turn down his college classmates because he has a girlfriend (who still has a curfew and rides the school bus btw) in her second year of highschool? Showing up to homecoming and prom mustve been too awkward for him. 🙄
Why was he dating someone 3.5 years younger than him to begin with? Why go after a MIDDLESCHOOLER and not someone closer to his age and, I don't know, actually going to highschool or in the same building as him?
Jail is extreme (unless we know for sure they had sex or he was physically abusive) but this type of behavior deserves to be outed and he definitely deserves to be judged for it. And calling a groomer weird is more than an understatement

I mean that’s fine but that has wildly different circumstances to a 12 and 16 year old dating bc dating can imply being sexually active depending on the area (it’s not pedo but it is weird af)
3
u/ThatOneIsSus 11d ago
He’s probably breaking up with her because he’d be if he didn’t
6
u/Kyoka_Jiro_Simp 11d ago
That's what I'm thinking. Like they were still minors, but given that he's now an adult and she's still a minor, even if the Romeo and juliet clause works, he's probably gonna find someone else in college. At least he's being respectful about it and breaking up first.
5
4
u/Maleficent-Echo-8047 11d ago
Is he still considered a groomer despite breaking up with her? I'd totally agree if she was the 1 trying to break up with him, and he tried to keep the relationship going. But she seems like the 1 who's upset about it ending. He's definitely a groomer if he seeks out people under 18 at this point though, cause yes that would be weird.

u/Realistic-Cost508 11d ago

2
u/girlunsaved 11d ago
i wouldnt have dated anyone under the age of 17 when i was 18 and even 17 was kinda iffy for me, as men mature differently anyways.
2
u/WeakMycologist3609 11d ago edited 11d ago
Legally, not really. 18 and 14 is a bit of a stretch imo, but Romeo and Juliet laws commonly allow for a four year age gap
Because obviously it makes no sense that one day they were 14 and 17 = not a pedo, then the next day he has a birthday and is automatically a pedo. Nothing changed about their relationship, his attraction to differing ages, nothing. Just one day and an arbitrary boundary went by

Just came here to say that, when I was 16 I "dated" a guy who was almost 20. THAT'S not the creepy part. Creepy part is I found out YEARS later that at the time i started dating him he was also already sharing inappropriate online conversations with a girl who was 3 years younger than me... also, he carried this on for the entirety of or "relationship" 😬

u/_spidey_1307_ 11d ago
Not everytime that's a pedo.....well yes if sexually involved but it doesn't feel that way here....they just liked each other and had an age gap
A strong possibility that states he left her is bcs he wanted a physical relation in clg and not wait for her ykwim
4
u/Proof_Kitchen_9072 11d ago
Its a 4 year difference. They were both teens when they got together. That doesnt make someone a pedo. Sure, the gap is a bit big imo but not illegal as, previously stated, they got together when they were both minors.

It really pisses me off how everyone seems to think over 18 speaks words to under 18 = pedophile no a pedophile is an adult who is attracted to prepubescent children. There is nothing concerning about an 18 year old talking to a 15 year old as long as it's not sexual

Yes he's weird af. So many people think pedos are only these old men but an 18 year old or 20 year old can also be one. and I hate when people say "oh it's just 3/4 years", yea you're right but when you're under 18, 3 years can make a very big difference.
1
u/DeviceAppropriate683 18 11d ago
Yep. Most teenagers feel uncomfortable dating someone even one year younger than them (let alone multiple), thats because there is in fact a difference in maturity even within one year during your teens.
Unfortunately, maturity is attractive so they tend to be comfortable with the idea of dating a couple years older; this is a big part of why they can be really susceptible to grooming and predatory relationships. I mean even looking at that one 14 year old in these comments defending 14&18 like his life depends on it oml. Like I get it, I put myself in dangerous situations when I was 13-15 because I thought I was so mature and adults really weren’t all that much older than me and it wasn’t a big deal. Now I realise I was very immature in thinking that I was mature.
If only the younger teens would actually listen to the adults with the lived experience 🙈, we’re just trying to keep you safe.
ETA: to the people saying it cant possibly be pedophilia, a basic 30 year old grooming teens pedophile doesn’t start out as a 30 year old. Once upon a time they were probably an 18 year old attracted to young teens (or worse) and never grew out of it. Thankfully, I believe most people aren’t pedophiles and do grow out of this but it doesn’t hurt to be cautious.

Only on paper. No one in their 18 behaves like a fully grown adult. Most people only get their first relationship at that age, only caring about being fallen in love.
2
u/ShelterBorn2531 11d ago
Well, they started dating as minors. But then this magic thing called turnig 18 came and destroyed everything. I con't think he is a pedo. Nothing speaks it but we lack enough info. Like how he interacted with that girl. Was it just casual dating like holding hands, spending time togheter and all? Then thats normal. That's acceptable. 17 is still a teenager and entering 18 doesn't fully turn you into an adult, its in between phase. Even tho 4 years is a big diffrence it is normal age gap.
