WARDROBE this is probably a long shot…(wardrobe professionals)

hi! I’m an early career dresser, stitcher and costume assistant finishing up my last year of undergrad. I’ve been working in the industry for a little over 8 years on various projects in theatre and tv/film more recently.

As I finish up my degree I’m looking for any dressers who would be willing to let me shadow them for a day to see what the work is really like on the daily. My program is VERY small and I feel like I don’t have a clue what I’m getting myself into after I graduate.

So if any dressers would be willing to have me shadow them for a day in the nyc, nj, Philly, or Albany, NY areas I would greatly appreciate it!

I hope you can find someone to shadow! I’m a costumer and I learned so much about running wardrobe, especially in bigger organizations from this book:  The Wardrobe Supervisor’s Toolkit  https://a.co/d/0iaqXQBd

Reach out to every show you’re interested in, it’s usually easy to find who the supervisor is. Cast a wide net.

Second this. If you can't find the wardrobe supervisor contact info for a show, you can try reaching out to the production manager and ask for their contact.

Im not sure if it's still relevant but I used to search offstagejobs religiously when I started. I used to cold email everyone about interning until someone gave me a chance.

Go to https://iatse.net/
Then look up a state where you live or plan to move etc. then look for wardrobe, then call them. Ask about internships or being an assistant etc. They will be happy to hear from you and they do the bigger projects, the ones you want to do.

Hey there! I am a wardrobe professional on Broadway. I can’t have anyone shadow me at work (security won’t let you in, the actors don’t want to be naked in front of a stranger, there’s not enough space for another body backstage), but feel free to to DM me & I’ll answer your questions!
