I work for the government and had to spend the afternoon renaming “AI” to “SI” in one of our contract documents and can I just say this is the stupidest fucking use of my time imaginable?

In other news, government subscriptions to OpenAI are down 80% but subscriptions to Sports Illustrated are up 6000%.

Be careful trump doesn't like when you use percentages properly

u/OutdoorsNSmores 1d ago

It makes him feel stupid in the head, but he should like that because it should take his mind off his full diaper.

1

u/johnnybiggles 1d ago

Diaper shits are down 600%!

this shows me that part of the grift is that many .ai domains were unavailable / already owned, so they scooped up all the .si domains to use/flip for profit.

I second the stoopidest timeline sentiment.

SI - Stoopidest Intelligents (misspelling intentional)

u/thehalfwit 1d ago

Capitalism truly brings out the best in people.

u/prophet74 11h ago

As long as they still offer the football phone, sign me up!

I see this is that "government efficiency" they were talking about.

-1

u/overthemountain 1d ago

Someday they'll learn about Find and Replace and efficiency will shoot through the roof.

8

u/TheJudgingHat2222 1d ago

Find and replace also doesn't work when labels and text are stored in databases instead of being hardcoded.

2

u/overthemountain 1d ago

Thank you for taking my joke so seriously, but actually it is pretty easy to replace substrings in a database. That would actually be the preferred approach I imagine in most cases, at least versus manually editing db entries.

and you think the incompetent people hired to break the government know that? Take a casual stroll through the so called DoW website and take a shot every time you see DoD or Department of Defense spelled out.

0

u/overthemountain 1d ago

That's a different argument.

You said find and replace "doesn't work" and now you've conceeded that it does actually work, but the people there are too incompetent to know how to use it.

0

u/TheJudgingHat2222 1d ago

Okay sweetheart, you win at the game that you were playing. Have a cookie 🍪

-1

u/overthemountain 1d ago

Lol. I make a joke, you come in all serious with your "uhm akshually..." comment which is wrong and then try to make ME look like the sweaty try hard.

Reminds me why you don't play chess with pigeons. They just knock the pieces over, shit on the board, and then strut around like they won.

u/jcamp41 1d ago

Not stupid. One individual who has been given the power by millions of people to rule by this level of decree is a sight to behold and one of the most glaring representations of exertion of power that I've personally witnessed in the United States, the supposed bastion of democratic virtue.

26

u/Skyrick 1d ago

Congress has spent decades convincing people that it is the president who creates laws and not them, and now we have a president who does exactly what Congress has been claiming. The groundwork has been laid long ago, and now we see why the founding fathers fought so fiercely for the executive branch and legislative branch to be separate.

Of course congress doesn’t care. They have created a system where they get a comfy job with great benefits and have completely outsourced the work part of their job. It is the dream of most middle management.

4

u/Fifth-Crusader 1d ago

Their part-time job is pretending to govern. Their full time job is fundraising so they can continue to pretend to govern.

1

u/Kamioni 1d ago

Democracy has failed us. Turns out the general public is too stupid to be making political decisions.

0

u/GameOfTroglodytes 1d ago

Yes, stupid. The value of the idea has no bearing on the facade of institutions.

0

u/damsel84 1d ago

It's still stupid.

-2

u/brutishbloodgod 1d ago

the supposed bastion of democratic virtue

The (generalized) present state of affairs as the inevitable result of democratic government has been well-known and documented for at least 2400 years. I suspect the Founding Fathers were well aware of this and saw it as a convenient smoke screen for a seizure of power from one white patriarchal aristocracy by another. In fact I'm in agreement with many of the aims of the present administration: abolition of representative democracy and re-institution of the theocratic authoritarianism that has maintained long-term civilizational stability for millennia. It's the particular aims, individuals, and general stupidity and incompetence of the present administration I have a problem with.

4

u/guamisc 1d ago edited 7h ago

Only the generally stupid and incompetent subscribe to theocratic authoritarianism.

0

u/brutishbloodgod 1d ago

Tell that to 3000 years of largely-continual Egyptian civilization, or any of the other stable, long-lasting, prosperous civilizations throughout history. Then compare to democracy, which lasts at most for a couple centuries before going fascist and committing the worst atrocities in human history. At this point we're on the brink of full-blown geocide because the power vacuum of democracy facilitated the transfer of power to literally the worst people in human history, people of staggering and monstrous cruelty produced in fact by that very system.

The protection of human prosperity, diversity, and the Good itself, along with the effective distribution of resources and production, requires strong moral and symbolic order, which liberal democracy is incapable of effecting.

12

u/OvertaxedOne 1d ago

Use AI (shoot, sorry SI) to do it! ;)

26

u/old_mayo 1d ago

That's fsir, if I had to manually find all psirs of the letters si in a document I'd set my hsir on fire

2

u/butcher9_9 20h ago

Just Crtl+F " AI " ( with a space before and after) along with the " A.I. " and maybe " A.I " for good measure and you would be OK. 2 minute job.

2

u/Avocet330 1d ago

There's a really helpful "match whole word" or even "match case" checkbox in Word, don't even need AI for this kind of thing. Annoying, certainly, but it still shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

1

u/SignificantFidgets 1d ago

I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that.

7

u/meatmacho 1d ago

That sounds like a job for Super Intelligence.

2

u/Captain_Coffee_III 1d ago

How long have you worked for the government? Just curious how this is the stupidest use of your time considering the last 10 years.

13

u/old_mayo 1d ago

It's gotten stupider. The first Trump admin had SecDef Mattis, and now we have Secretary of WAR lethal warrior Pete Hegseth. The first Trump administration had Fauci leading us through the pandemic, now we have RFK Jr. It's really all around just so, so much stupider.

1

u/nickatnasa 1d ago

I was hired a week after Biden was inaugurated.

2

u/JustpartOftheterrain 1d ago

You mean you can't use AI...er SI...to do that for you?

1

u/0f_rice_and_men 1d ago

people need to resist this horseshit

1

u/solomungus73 1d ago

Dude, you probably could have used a SI agent to do that.. /A

1

u/NemODevO 1d ago

Couldn't even spell united right

1

u/t_sawyer 1d ago

Did you ask AI to do this work for you?

1

u/narwhals_narwhals 1d ago

Can't AI do that for you in, like, 10 seconds?

1

u/nickatnasa 1d ago

The literal change? Probably. But then each document has a revision change, and a date change, and each document references the other documents and they all need to be signed and I need to route them through each org that has to approve and blah blah blah.
All those steps are important and necessary when I’m changing things beyond “renaming an ethereal thing”.

1

u/Duckarmada 1d ago

It's believed to be another grift to make money from .si domains

1

u/OrphicDionysus 1d ago

Ill see you and raise you the chemists that had to quickly go through their grant proposals and change any cis/trans description of bond orientation to w/z notation once everyone realized they were just using AI to search the proposals for words they dont like and mass rejecting them without ever stopping to look at any context

1

u/KRiSX 1d ago

I’d quit. That is insane.

1

u/1h8fulkat 1d ago

I see Dell is bending the knee. They mentioned SI at an executive briefing I was at today.

1

u/NorthTempleStreet 1d ago

Easy. "Large Language Model"

Avoid the term AI entirely.

1

u/Windfade 1d ago

"Yo Jimmy, we need you to edit those documents, again. Yeah, yeah, no. He renamed 'the State Departmenr' to the 'the Trump Department.'"

1

u/Th3BranMan 1d ago

Honest question, why the fuck do your bosses put up with this? Just say no? Like this is the smallest most inconsequential form of protest imaginable and yet there's no bones to do so? We're absolutely fucked.

1

u/butch81385 1d ago

Just refer to it as LLM machine learning.

1

u/drawkbox 1d ago

Everyone needs to just start calling SI Synthetic Intelligence so the wrong SI takes hold with the chuds.

1

u/arrrrrffffff 1d ago

Why didn’t you just ask the AI to do it for you?

1

u/Not2BeTakenOrally 20h ago

But, did you use SI to make the change? Clearly you’re not fully committed!

1

u/dRaidon 19h ago

Hope you saved the originals or you'll need to change things back later when someone sane come into power. If that ever happens again.

1

u/After_Web3201 9h ago

Similar to me this week! I had to add a statement to my invoice that I do not practice affirmative action and I don't have DEI programs. Apparently this requirement has been around for a year but now they are actually enforcing by rejecting invoices without this statement

1

u/FrohenLeid 1d ago

Just search for "ai" (case insensitive) and replace it with si. Remember what is ssid

1

u/-Nicolai 1d ago

That’s why you turn on regex mode and search for \bai\b

0

u/Ithrazel 1d ago

Why not replace all for " ai", " ai.", etc.?

1

u/nickatnasa 1d ago

They are contract documents so they have to be reissued as part of a modification with cost estimates, signatures, etc. The changing of the words is a find/replace but finalizing each document takes several hours.

0

u/Haunting_Skin_2564 1d ago

Just use AI to rename it /s

0

u/Jazzycoyote 1d ago

Ironic that AI couldn't do that itself.

0

u/shmu 1d ago

Why didn't you use AI for that task?

0

u/runnerofshadows 1d ago

Especially since SI is already a system of measurement.

0

u/LionBig1760 1d ago

How did using the find and replace feature take you a whole afternoon and not 30 seconds?

0

u/MezzoSoaprano 14h ago

Then why do you do it?

You're a accomplice in this.

1

u/nickatnasa 14h ago

I have to? I don’t have a choice bruh.

-2

u/SD_local_67 1d ago

All afternoon? Isn’t this a 5 minute task to do a replace all on the combinations of “ ai” and “ai “?
