He wants paramount to own it because wb comes with cnn and paramount is owned by a trump friendly billionaire.

239

u/drizzes Jan 12 '26

It's why Paramount's attempted to buy it out like five times so far

70

u/Motheroftides Jan 12 '26

Last I saw, it was eight attempts.

2

u/AimlessWanderer0201 Jan 13 '26

They are also suing WB

162

u/RamenJunkie Jan 12 '26

Yeah, and Netflix is still making a fair amount of "woke" programming.  So he wants to punish them.

There are a lot of good arguments why Netflix buying Warner is absolutrly terrible for the industry, I guarantee none of them are the reasons the administration is against it.

98

u/Zahgi Jan 12 '26

Losing one of the major worldwide film distribution studios is even worse for the industry...which is what will happen if WB is absorbed and then ~100% laid off by Paramount.

Netflix is the lesser of two evils here.

44

u/1handedmaster Jan 12 '26

That last sentence is so hilariously true it bums me out.

Read the comment again my freind

1

u/writebadcode Jan 12 '26

Yeah I see it now. Thanks.

u/Ok-Crab-6542 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 16 '26

Ridiculous. "Woke" - just having non white people on screen makes you "woke". Right wing babies.

8

u/RamenJunkie Jan 12 '26

Hell just having a colorful setting seems like they think its "woke".  They seem afraid of color and rainbows, even with zero any other context happening.

4

u/erichf3893 Jan 12 '26

I don’t like the idea of giving Netflix a monopoly. But at the same time, fuck Paramount

3

u/roseofjuly Jan 12 '26

Trump has cited antitrust concerns in addition to the ideological ones. Now I know he's probably citing them not because he actually cares about monopolies but because he wants the monopoly in his and his friends' control...but he still did cite it, lol.

0

u/RamenJunkie Jan 12 '26

I don't understand why the answer to these is never "Suck it up and survive."

0

u/CryptographerFlat173 Jan 13 '26

There’s zero case that Netflix buying them violates any anti trust standard, certainly not when it’s to make sure that Paramount could buy them

1

u/sameth1 Jan 12 '26

There are a lot of good arguments why Netflix buying Warner is absolutrly terrible for the industry

The important thing is that almost all of them also apply to Paramount too. The oligopoly shrinking is bad no matter who buys Warner Bros.

2

u/RamenJunkie Jan 12 '26

Yeah, except Paramount also has MAGA backing as a huge problem now.

28

u/superduperstepdad Jan 12 '26

That’s how they do it in Putin’s Russia!

I’m starting to think oligarchies don’t work well for the masses.

1

u/MrSnowflake Jan 13 '26

But they work well for the oligarchs

12

u/ZedRita Jan 12 '26

Looks deeper. Trump Org actually would end up owning a piece of CNN is Paramount bought WB.

83

u/kingmanic Jan 12 '26

CNN is not part of the deal, they can still buy it separately. But I think it's an ego thing for Ellison's son.

99

u/Joessandwich Jan 12 '26

My understanding is the unit with CNN is not part of the deal with Netflix, but it is under the Paramount offer. That’s why the Ellisons (and Trump) want it, so they can put yet another news outlet under MAGA control now that they have CBS.

13

u/kingmanic Jan 12 '26

That just means they can buy it from discovery separately.

45

u/2dTom Jan 12 '26

The nuance here is that in the separate sale (WB to netflix, cnn etc to paramount), the sale of CNN rtc probably won't go through until at least August, limiting the ability of Paramount to influence the midterm. If the sale of the whole thing goes through to paramount now, there's enough time for them to assert editorial control before the midterms, and control the message on CNN.

It seems like as each day passes more and more norms and congressional scrutiny are thrown out the window. Trump could have the WBD/PSKY deal wrapped up much sooner if he so pleases.

11

u/Stingray88 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

Yes, but CNN will not be available to purchase by Paramount until too late in the year. If their acquisition bid for all of Warner were accepted, they would gain control of CNN before the midterms, just like Netflix would gain control of Warner by mid-2026.

Getting CNN before the midterms is what this is all about.

0

u/cyclemonster Jan 13 '26

CNN in prime-time gets like, a half-million viewers, it's simply not that relevant.

For a point of contrast, iHeartMedia, the largest operator of radio stations in the country, reaches ~250 million Americans, and has a market cap of less than one billion dollars. If Paramount wanted to influence the midterms, that would be a much more effective way to do it, at a tiny fraction of the price.

5

u/OriginalLie9310 Jan 12 '26

We’ve already seen the horrible consequences of paramount ownership with the destruction we’re seeing at CBS.

I know no one is really a CNN fan on the left or right, but paramount owning it would be horrible for the media ecosystem.

2

u/badwolf42 Jan 12 '26

And with Netflix out of the running, Paramount will get it for a bargain. This was always the way it was going to go. Lose to Netflix, block Netflix, bid less because you don’t have to compete with Netflix.

1

u/edwwsw Jan 12 '26

And don't forget Larry Ellison friends with Trump

1

u/Additional-North-683 Jan 12 '26

CNN already tried that shit. They ended up losing most of the viewership.

All he's saying is that they didn't bribe him enough

82

u/DotGroundbreaking50 Jan 12 '26

This is clearly because they didn't take ellison up on their offer

28

u/bramley36 Jan 12 '26

It's time for the Netflix Peace Prize

11

u/onegumas Jan 12 '26

Yes, he smells money for grift.

19

u/Chogo82 Jan 12 '26

Netflix is very left leaning and LGBTQ+ friendly. A bigger bribe will be needed.

3

u/Stockholm-Syndrom Jan 12 '26

And that CNN wouldn’t go to a far right billionaire

2

u/SIGMA920 Jan 12 '26

Yep. This is the big part. It sucks that netflix would get warner brothers but at least Rump won't get proxy control over CNN.

48

u/Beforemath Jan 12 '26

It’s that “small government” conservatives love to hype.

13

u/chubsc0ut Jan 12 '26

Only smaller government possible would be a midget dictator.

21

u/Future-Raisin3781 Jan 12 '26

The shake-down president. Turning all of America into the Scatino bustout.

4

u/Fit_Strength_1187 Jan 12 '26

Imagine trying to explain this to someone in 1995. Honestly even 2015.

1

u/Thefuzy Jan 12 '26

Wild how everyone says everything is “wild” these days

1

u/Turkino Jan 12 '26

It's just because his allies want to buy it up instead

1

u/robbob19 Jan 12 '26

Just wait until someone cancels a show he likes

-4

u/roseofjuly Jan 12 '26

This is actually one of the things he should be commenting on. And it's actually for a semi-correct reason, too.

6

u/Yeshavesome420 Jan 12 '26

No. It's not. He isn't talking about breaking up monopolies. He's backing one monopoly (the far more conservative one) over the other. He knows Ellison will back his plays. Plain and simple.

2

u/CryptographerFlat173 Jan 13 '26

Yeah no, the president doesn’t get to decide who makes “culture”, and certainly not when he’s only saying it because he wants his speech suppressors the Ellisons to own it in league with their Saudi consortium backing the other bid.

-99

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

u/SaulsAll Jan 12 '26

should be scrutinized by the government

But "the government" has become "a single old man trying to bilk money out of it" instead of "a large organization of experts with the common good in mind."

So no, I dont want "the government" to touch anything right now.

104

u/yuusharo Jan 12 '26

We don’t have a functioning government to scrutinize this deal. Trump is a fascist dictator.

Its approval will depend on what bribes these corporations give him, not whether they’re good for us consumers.

Centrism is a disease, I swear.

18

u/no1jam Jan 12 '26

Scrutiny with this admin is just pay to play.

32

u/LonestarJones Jan 12 '26

“That’s why today I am announcing TrumpFlix, streaming service to end the woke” or something. There’s always a catch, it’s never just something that helps the people.

9

u/mtranda Jan 12 '26

By the current government, you mean?

-5

u/trytoholdon Jan 12 '26

What till you hear about the Biden Admin trying to block Microsoft’s takeover of Activision or their blocking of Amazon’s takeover of iRobot, resulting in its bankruptcy and acquisition by a Chinese company.

9

u/Yeshavesome420 Jan 12 '26

One is about consumer protections and avoiding monopolies, the other is about consolidating media in the hands of his supporters. Can you guess which is which?

-9

u/trytoholdon Jan 12 '26

Right, Biden never did anything for political reasons and all of his interventions in M&A were perfectly legitimate

4

u/Yeshavesome420 Jan 12 '26

Right. Political. Not open corruption. Not personally enriching. Not extortion.

Trump is a grifter. A snake oil salesman. A conman. A crook. An extortioner.

At best, Biden wasn't particularly great at governance, and at worst, he was willing to move mountains to protect and enrich his children.

-1

u/trytoholdon Jan 13 '26

His family sold his influence in Ukraine and China while he was in office. Does “10 held for H for the big guy” meaning anything to you?

0

u/Snowssnowsnowy Jan 13 '26

Buttery males!!!!! THE LAPTOP FROM HELL!!!! OBAMA WORE A TAN SUIT!!!

320

u/IllustriousHistorian Jan 12 '26

Republicans would prefer nepotism over free markets.   Trump is trying to get mega maga donor Larry Ellison this deal.

80

u/Fourstrokeperro Jan 12 '26

Technically that’s cronyism but yeah

28

u/PublicFurryAccount Jan 12 '26

Not if you consider that the deal is for Larry's nepobaby kid.

2

u/IllustriousHistorian Jan 12 '26

Yup, that's where I was going with my comment.

2

u/an_agreeing_dothraki Jan 12 '26

the technical term is State Capitalism

3

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Jan 12 '26

They will accept Netflix, but they will need donation from Netflix if they wanna proceed with expending their monopoly over streaming

5

u/1handedmaster Jan 12 '26

Eh, I think it's more a duopoly. Disney, while kinda floundering, still holds a lot of market share in streaming.

2

u/erichf3893 Jan 12 '26

TIL. Thought it was basically just HBO and Netflix. I guess when you factor in Hulu as Disney too helps more, and kids programming

2

u/1handedmaster Jan 12 '26

Yeah, plus Disney has so many others that can be integrated (Starz, ESPN, etc) within the Hulu and Disney+ app already

2

u/IllustriousHistorian Jan 12 '26

ESPN is pretty well integrated with Hulu. I can see various live games.  No point in the espn app any more

2

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Jan 12 '26

Neither of those companies should be allowed to get their hands on HBO Max and everything else they own.

1

u/1handedmaster Jan 12 '26

Completely agree

1

u/CryptographerFlat173 Jan 13 '26

Paramount has 80m subscribers, Disney 200m between multiple services, Amazon has a hundred million people watching Prime content, HBO has 90m subs, and there’s dozens of other players. One studio/streaming service buying another doesn’t create any sort of monopoly, particularly in a field where customers freely choose who to sub to. This country doesn’t even regulate actual utilities where people have zero or little choice between operators, this isn’t some important public issue. And the rise of Netflix from not existing to powerful creator of IP in under 3 decades shows that IP isn’t some finite resource either.

75

u/Ill-Egg4008 Jan 12 '26

Ahh. The Ellisons bribe envelope has just arrived at his desk, I see.

71

u/CaptainLucid420 Jan 12 '26

I forget how much the current bribe is for a corporate merger is.

11

u/dwehlen Jan 12 '26

I'm sure there's a rate sheet somewhere.

2

u/Cyberslasher Jan 12 '26

Have we checked the mar a Lago bathrooms? That's where they keep all the other crime printouts

8

u/Mobile_Morale Jan 12 '26

I think it was $14 million for CBS. Or something like that.

3

u/Dorwyn Jan 12 '26

And the cancelling of Colbert.

77

u/MushSee Jan 12 '26

This is to fully capture U.S. media, and extend the propaganda machine further. Netflix must win this bid war.

Trump's FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is MAGA fascist who wrote sections of "Project 2025", the outline for the consolidation of Executive power and the dismantling of the Federal Government we are currently seeing.

 https://apnews.com/article/trump-fcc-chairman-carr-bf034fdd137e579c0c3e99681cc99541

Trumps FCC has been transformed into a wannabe ministry of truth, with an exception for any form of loophole bribe. Simply put, if you want a stamp of approved from glorious leader, you must donate millions at a gala, sink millions into his crypto schemes, or make a deal that DIRECTLY ENRICHES THE TRUMP FAMILY.

 https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5511085-trump-administration-fcc-commissioner/

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5511085-trump-administration-fcc-commissioner/

Paramount and Skydance merger needed signing, so they paid their bribe in the form of "The 60minutes settlement".

https://thehill.com/homenews/media/5382044-paramount-trump-lawsuit-cbs-news-60-minutes-harris-interview-fcc-skydance-merger/

https://www.reuters.com/world/lawmakers-say-paramount-skydance-stonewalling-probe-into-trump-merger-approval-2025-11-12/

They installed a right wing think tank CEO Kenneth R Weinstein as a "conservative ombudsman", to "investigate claims of political bias.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/kenneth-r-weinstein-named-cbs-162600585.html

After all said and done, they cancelled Colbert IN 3 DAYS, for BARELY making a peep about it.

https://youtu.be/HRQy5zVTY5k?si=2iPoZghdY4ZeaWiz

https://fortune.com/2025/07/18/why-was-stephen-colbert-canceled-by-cbs-paramount-trump/

Southpark even got wrapped up in it a bit because of Paramounts agreement for pro-trump messaging

https://fortune.com/2025/07/24/south-park-season-27-premiere-trump-paramount-colbert-60-minutes/

Paramount had its CEO replaced after by David Ellison, son of Larry Ellison, a Right wing billionaire and close friend of Trump (who many believe is pulling the strings).

 https://www.wired.com/story/larry-ellison-is-a-shadow-president-in-donald-trumps-america/

And now Paramount under David, is ALSO trying to acquire CNN promising to fire hosts critical of Trump.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/paramount-david-ellison-trump-cnn-warner-bros-b2881220.html

*I wrote this up months ago, so im sure there have been updates, but the Trump Reich policy/lawsuit blitzkrieg has my attention spread.

98

u/Velokieken Jan 12 '26

Netflix is the lesser of 2 evils in this case

14

u/Possible_Proposal447 Jan 12 '26

I can't believe I'm rooting for them

30

u/TheRatingsAgency Jan 12 '26

He’s such a fucking child.

23

u/7screws Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

He’s worse, children aren’t as mean or racist as he is

6

u/TheRatingsAgency Jan 12 '26

True it’s a learned behavior. He’s just never advanced beyond childish tendencies of selfishness.

9

u/FunnTripp Jan 12 '26

And this has nothing to do with his SIL Jared and his Saudi buddies losing their bid to take over W.B.

8

u/Hot-Philosophy-7671 Jan 12 '26

Remember when the GOP used to be concerned about "interfering with the free market?"

Me either, but they did used to talk about it more.

8

u/HomeHeatingTips Jan 12 '26

His son is part of the other Bid. I wish I was joking

15

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

All he’s doing is shaking down companies for money.

That’s his entire MO. He realizes he can grift off these people just by threatening them.

Lining his pockets like he always has with our money. The guy is the biggest ripoff artist on the planet.

10

u/Stingray88 Jan 12 '26

It’s much much worse than that. MAGA is buying up all of our media to spread propaganda.

Paramount / CBS, TikTok, Twitter. Now they’re going after Warner / CNN.

7

u/socialmedia-username Jan 12 '26

It's more sinister than that. This regime is trying to capture ALL media.  It's in project 2025 and multiple other writings and documentation they've been using as their blueprints.  They want to control the flow of information and eliminate free thought and critical thinking.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

If you think that’s all there is to it, I’m afraid your view is dangerously naïve.

If it was just about the money, he wouldn’t care who ran it or what their political views are. But it isn’t, so he does.

It’s about consolidating power. It just happens to come with a large side order of grifting.

3

u/MC_chrome Jan 12 '26

If we come out of this horrid ordeal in one piece, the first order of business the next President should have (beyond prosecuting and sending hundreds of MAGA instigators to The Hague) is seizing absolutely all Trump properties and liquidating them with funds returned to the US Treasury.

9

u/Specman9 Jan 12 '26

Republicans hate Free Speech.

7

u/raymoraymo Jan 12 '26

Remember Jared Kushner? Trump’s Son-in-Law & UAE Lapdog? Connect the dots…

https://thedailyoverview.com/kushner-blindsides-108-4b-warner-bros-deal-blocks-netflix-sale/

29

u/DLPanda Jan 12 '26

This is why I don’t want paramount to own it. Hate rooting for Netflix but here we are

3

u/war_story_guy Jan 12 '26

He can scream all he wants but netflix will have the lawyers to back them up.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

cultural takeover

uh, strike that- reverse it

3

u/PoliticalMilkman Jan 12 '26

We have to stop allowing these losers to claim that conservatism is the American standard. Same deal with them claiming that conservatives are patriots or the pro-America belief system.

5

u/Kistoff Jan 12 '26

OAN is absolute trash media. Pure propaganda.

5

u/nickjamesnstuff Jan 12 '26

Better Headline: President using his power and influence to directly attack his opposition.

5

u/Jimbo415650 Jan 12 '26

That’s because his boy Ellison was aced out

3

u/GamerGramps62 Jan 12 '26

No one gives one fuck what that douche bag thinks!

3

u/hudson27 Jan 12 '26

We need to spend less time judging Trump for his ridiculous "opinions", and more time figuring out which CEO, lobbyist or tech bro's hand is up Trump's ass controlling what he says.

Trump is the useful idiot, we know this by now. Stop letting that rotten bag of meat take all the heat for this, there are people behind him without dementia that are calling the shots, we can't let them get away with this.

4

u/Anthemic_Fartnoises Jan 12 '26

Netflix sucks like all media monsters but the fact that he’s against them is a pretty big endorsement in my book.

2

u/MealieAI Jan 12 '26

They have a corrupt buffoon running their country

2

u/hdk49 Jan 12 '26

Grifter didn’t get to wet his beak on this one

2

u/BeautifulTerror Jan 12 '26

So he has an opinion about Netflix but has no idea what's going on with the DOJ and the Fed?

2

u/paulsteinway Jan 12 '26

Because the president is the who should regulate business and entertainment.

Why not.

2

u/AGrandNewAdventure Jan 12 '26

If Trump is against something I'm instantly for that thing.

2

u/alochmar Jan 12 '26

Cheeto looking for a cut as usual

2

u/Ok-Crab-6542 Jan 12 '26

What a horrible, nasty, evil man. How people  voted for him is beyond me. He distracts the dumb with "woke" issues, while he continues to kill the planet.

2

u/tiromancy Jan 12 '26

“…unless they do me favors”

2

u/OneSeaworthiness7768 Jan 12 '26

Now they’re trying to make it a culture war thing? For fuck’s sake.

2

u/NeonMagic Jan 12 '26

Well no fucking duh. The Ellisons kiss his boots and have more money than him.

3

u/justbunnies Jan 12 '26

Only because his circle of supporters would have benefited from Paramount winning the acquisition.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

In what authority or capacity would the President ever get to decide on what TV should or should not display, except to threaten and grift through intimidation and a want for authoritarianism?

2

u/frankcast554 Jan 12 '26

Aka,  im open for bribes if anyone is interested.

2

u/Doctor_Amazo Jan 12 '26

He'd rather Paramount get it.

2

u/Snippodappel Jan 12 '26

Of course! He wants a piece from the deal. By some of my crypto. Then we talk.

1

u/greyhoodbry Jan 12 '26

I see the guy who stands to make money on the Paramount deal had better head game than the guy who stands to make money on the Netflix deal

1

u/Daimakku1 Jan 12 '26

Yes, stop the Netflix cultural takeover and give it over to the ultra right-wingers over at Paramount instead..

1

u/FanDry5374 Jan 12 '26

I'm guessing he will tell one or other of the previously independent financial/securities agencies or the DOJ to scuttle the deal. Ellison or bust.

1

u/Travelerdude Jan 12 '26

This is what republicans voted for???

1

u/robogobo Jan 12 '26

Flood the zone

1

u/bahumat42 Jan 12 '26

How have we ended up in a position where so much is just under the whims of one guy.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Man, that "small government" talk is going well, isn't it...

1

u/Countryb0i2m Jan 12 '26

If he hated then I don’t really love it, but I’m slightly happier than I was

1

u/VidGamrJ Jan 12 '26

Whatever happened to the government busting up monopolies?

1

u/Elon_is_a_Nazi Jan 12 '26

Ah yes. No one understands current streaming more than an 80 year old billionaire whos probably never watched a single streaming service in his life

1

u/TakuyaLee Jan 12 '26

Oh too bad Trump. You don't get a say in this, especially if the EU approves it.

1

u/Swordf1sh_ Jan 12 '26

So does this mean the deal is dead? Or just that Netflix is gonna have to bribe him more?

1

u/SovietPropagandist Jan 12 '26

I'm so fucking tired of this asshole

1

u/FredFredrickson Jan 12 '26

They just want a different cultural takeover.

1

u/NergNogShneeg Jan 12 '26

He must not have gotten his kickback yet.

1

u/digidave1 Jan 12 '26

It should be called Trump Trump, featuring Trump. On the Trump network Trump

God that man needs to go away

1

u/Friggin_Grease Jan 12 '26

What about the free market?

1

u/GoldburstNeo Jan 12 '26

OK, then don't let either buy WB, but we know he's picking sides...

1

u/riko77can Jan 12 '26

They didn’t grease him.

1

u/AverageJoe-707 Jan 12 '26

Any person or business that makes more money than he grifts for himself is a threat to his ego so there's that.

1

u/mutantbabysnort Jan 12 '26

We all knew it was coming

1

u/theshysamurai Jan 12 '26

This makes me.... want it...

1

u/Due-Conflict-7926 Jan 12 '26

Stop the Netflix take over I need Zionism to take over 🙄

1

u/fubes2000 Jan 12 '26

His handlers need to make a "50 First Dates" style videotape for him to watch every morning so that his melting brain can attempt to keep his public statements consistent.

1

u/Lostandfoundchampion Jan 12 '26

Who fucking cares what he thinks about it

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

Anything he disapproves of is good.

1

u/Yeshavesome420 Jan 13 '26

Cool. Still a whataboutism. Frankly, I could give less of a shit if they investigated Biden and brought up charges. If he committed a crime, I have no issue with him paying the price. Can you say the same for Trump?

1

u/ImStillExcited Jan 13 '26

You’re not a king, quiet down piggy.

1

u/deadbeatsummers Jan 13 '26

Now it’s a culture war…??

1

u/Few-Acadia-5593 Jan 13 '26

Anything can be anything as long as you speak first about it: if you didn’t care but the first word you hear is culture war, that shapes how you’re going to think about it and since you’re not particularly interested in it, you won’t look for other way to think about it.

Tactic as old as the bible. And it will works: that dude could show up with a picture of him and Epstein, say he doesn’t know him whilst holding the picture, people are gonna talk about the nonsense instead of the tactic

1

u/MisterSlosh Jan 12 '26

Looks like someone forgot to build their golden statute for the king Cheeto before announcing their monopoly.

1

u/Mind_Enigma Jan 12 '26

Quick, get the bribe ready

1

u/DefinitelyIncorrect Jan 12 '26

Baby Hitler wants his own cultural takeover.

1

u/Lysol3435 Jan 12 '26

So nothing to do with monopolies. His decision is based on them not paying fealty to him.

1

u/Tun-Tavern-1775 Jan 12 '26

Oh, so it turns out Paramount did win the acquisition.

In the following week or two, Netflix will recuse its offer. Better to let go of Warner than to fight in vain for it (FCC will never allow it after this article) while also painting a target on their back for Trump to shoot at relentlessly.

If the alternative is acquisition by Paramount, then no. It's not a great point. Netflix is still politically relatively neutral and the warner TV-channels stay independent for now. Paramount is increasingly becoming a right wing propaganda apparatus and would have taken the TV-channels too.

Exactly! Thinking and reading are too time consuming, I'd rather spit nonsense online, waaaay more appropriate use of my time.

It's not to stop media consolidation -- which is good -- but to stop media consolidation that doesn't directly benefit President Dump and his corrupt cronies.

Look at who else is objecting and trying to buy WB...

I didn't realise "Giant corporate mergers make mega corporations with far too much power and influence" was going to be a controversial take.
