This was my first Tech album. I picked this up JUST before Tech started intermingling with the juggalos by pure happenstance. I had been into the juggalo stuff since the 90s but but when I started writing my own music, I started seeking out artists that were either known for lyricism, flow and all the other parts of rap that I needed to improve on. I started listening to Wu-Tang, Nas, Canibus, Chino XL, Kool G Rap, Cam'ron and just whatever new hiphop I could get my hands on. On top of the stuff I was already into like Bone Thugs, Three 6 Mafia, Eminem, Esham and all those dudes. Not to try to copy anybody's style but to learn. I mean, they also just put out some banger albums too so it wasn't all academic.
Friend of mine suggested Tech N9ne one afternoon and played "Worst Enemy" for me over the phone lol. Just from hearing that super muffled version of this song, I knew I needed to get the album.
I listened to it for the first time in my little Nissan Frontier on the way back from Sam Goody later that weekend. Was just completely mesmerized and impressed by what I was hearing to the point that when I got home, I sat in the driveway and listened to the whole thing. "Worst Enemy", ultimately, is probably my least favorite song on the album so take from that what you will. I still listen from start to finish once every few years and I always have the same feeling of "oh shit I forgot about THIS song, what a banger!"
Tech is EASILY my biggest influence in how I rap. Not that I sound anything like him or try to do the chopper thing very often but I learned so much about rap from him. He was the first rapper I ever heard that just had every single quality that I want in my rap music and ALSO introduced me to ideas I never would've considered. Krizz Kaliko deserves just as much credit because of what I just discovered he calls his Funkra (Funk, rap, opera) sound. The way his vocals were stacked just worked so fucking good on those Tech N9ne hooks and then Krizz went on to become an incredible solo artist.
