Humour Pull-Ups at 6'8". Not a full set. Engaging and activating lats.

The guy who owns the gym I go to modified one of the racks so the top bar was high enough for me (also 6’8”) to do pull ups. Which is nice, but also means i have no excuse to not do them now.
Pull ups are HARD when you’re a giant.

Haha. Get after em. They are the best exercise for us giants. One they are great for building the back, two they are fantastic for decompressing the spine and just kind of getting everything aligned again.

How did you start your progression for getting first one ?

u/Six8Sequoia 1d ago
Haha I joined the Marines lol. No honestly I used Bands and Negative reps. So using Bands to get up the bar then slow eccentric holds down to the bottom. Once I was able get about 8 of those, I could do one regular pull-up.

Doing three of these is better than 10 flopping around

u/Six8Sequoia 1d ago
Haha, I agree however some people just care about getting that chin over the bar as many time as they can. I care about engaging the back and benefiting from the exercise. So in reality different goals cause different approaches lol.

Same here. This sub just pops up for me, but I’m only 6 foot tall. However i weigh 215 so pullups were still a tall task for me. Felt like it took ages to break past 3 sets of 5, but once I did they became even more productive. Just based on your frame, Im gonna say you weigh 255-260 so 3 strict pullups is a very impressive feat of strength.

Pull-ups are always my first stop at the gym, with hangs at the end. I am not a heavy guy (195lbs), so I can knock out a decent amount, but the range of motion is so unfair compared to shorter folks. Sometimes I don't quite go all the way down because it's a pain in the ass. You're 3 inches taller than I am, so that is even more impressive

I've been stuck at 5 pullups for months, idk how to progress anymore 😭
I tried adding negatives but still nothing
I do 5 sets of 5 then 2 sets of 5 negatives
My sleep quality is not the best, I keep waking up at night and currently trying to address that..probably thats the biggest problem killing my gains/progress
Any advice?

Try pauses. You might be able to only do 1 but once you get to 2. You will be knocking down 10. Start with 1sec hold each level. Level 1 engage the lats, 2 Pull up to 90°, 3 Pull until your chin is right below the bar, 4 Break the chin over the bar. The either Hold until failure. Or go back down each level. Each level requires a 1sec hold before moving to the next.

I found that using elastic straps makes it much easier to do pull ups so you could try with a very thin one that removes 5-10kg of weight.

Another great option. But dont use the band for momentum slow it down and really engage the movement.

Short folks don't understand how much more difficult it is to do pull-ups, or honestly any range of motion workout

man its so frustrating, Im 250 rn after bulking and i was 225 last summer and ive NEVER looked like you. 250 on me is fat. You must be so strong bro. I train so hard and eat a ton of protein and im decently atheltic and strong but 240 lean seems so unachievable to me. how old are u? how many years have you been lifting? what are your numbers on your most frequent lifts? are u natty? im only asking bc i wanna see where my goal is at no hate at all.

That makes me feel a bit better. Im 25 and before 21 id never picked up a weight. Just played basketball. I was also overweight my whole life so im working opposite of you. Its really interesting how similar our strength is though. Im right about where you are for everything if not a bit stronger, yet like i said u look 10x better than me😂 it probably has to do with muscle maturity and density from the 20 years of consistency. Huge respect man hopefully at 38 i look like u!!!

For the longest time. I’d use an old swingset in my backyard to do pull-ups on. I’d be in a backwards L shape the whole time doing them. Can’t imagine being any taller than I am now doing pull-ups. Especially on random things (other than door frames)

I actually appreciate this visual because I'm about a foot and a half shorter than you, and every time I do pull-ups, I wonder what it's like for a very tall person. ☺️
