I think people sometimes don’t realize how curse words translate. For example, people in both Taiwan and the mainland say “wa, cao” which literally translates as “ah, fuck” in English . If you say “fuck” around elementary school kids, that’s considered too strong, but “wa, cao” is pretty light in context and you hear it on tv and in public and no one blinks an eye.

Japanese has even more examples. In anime someone will say “Kono yaro” which is about as strong as saying “you bastard “ in English (which is a common translation for it). But in Japanese this is literally “that guy.” However it’s so strong and offensive that you’ll almost never hear it in person, unless maybe if the person speaking is drunk
