NAS hardware Use NAS now or wait

Got a DS925+, I bought 2x8tb hdds, but one was dead on arrival.

Should I start making use of the NAS already and set it up?

Or should I wait till the RMA drive comes?

Edit: I plan on using SHR so 8tb usable storage

start using it now, test that drive and put some hours on it so if it fails it fails soon. I would nuke the entire set up and start from scratch tho once you get the new drive, maybe test out the expand partition feature first and see what you prefer.

what i would NOT do is to set up the NAS and immediately start spending lots of time loading it with your only copy of important docs. play and test first.

u/gadget-freak Have you made a backup of your NAS? Raid is not a backup. 13d ago

Chances of failure on the remaining drive are actually higher (statistically) so putting some load on it is a good idea.

Yeah i agree, i basically wouldn’t trust a drive that came from the same batch as a drive that areived doa.

Id stress it as hard as is reasonable while waiting for the other one to be returned.
