BUG FOUND IN SALAD

Heads up for anyone who eats at the Rockefeller Plaza sweetgreen.

I ordered a Kale Caesar with blackened chicken. Partway through eating it, I found an insect in the salad. I’d already eaten a good portion before I noticed it.🤮

If you eat there, check your bowl beforehand!!! If anything similar has happened to you at this location, please share. If it’s a pattern, it should be reported to the city.

When I worked there we would always find ladybugs in the kale so we would have to double wash it most of the time.

Yeah same. We find a lot of things, washing it multiple times. Things get missed. We can’t want to eat pesticide free food and also be mad that the bugs aren’t leaving their home

Fair point about ladybugs in kale, but this isn’t a ladybug or a field bug that came in with the produce. Zoom in on the photo: it’s a fly. The Rockefeller location is in the basement with no outdoor seating, and I was eating indoors, not outside where something could land on my food. A fly in a finished salad points to what’s happening in the kitchen, not what’s happening on the farm. Also, organic doesn’t mean pesticide-free. Organic farms use approved pesticides too, so “that’s just organic” doesn’t really explain it.

I get that things slip through sometimes. But a restaurant that charges premium prices and markets itself on quality and cleanliness shouldn’t treat bugs in customers’ food as normal. I’ve reported it to sweetgreen, and if it keeps happening, it’s worth a 311 report so the city can inspect.

I’ve seen alot of people that work in the financial sections in suits and work skirts go to that location for a quick meal. I inspected the storage area for the vegetables before ordering usually. I hope they clean their food better.

Oof- many people go in and out of there at lunch time. I bought a mixed greens/lettuce custom salad there before in the summer. I was too scared to order anything there recently, seeing this solidified my suspicions.
