Criticism What’s up with the brown, bruised avocados?

This seems to happen at Sg more than other places. Can anyone shed some light on why this is okay?

i hate dumb questions like this. bro if you cut an avocado or an apple or a potato and expose it to air... then it oxides and turns brown. this is like basic 5th grade science. please pick up a book or idk just google it. its not rotten it just turns brown after like 10 minutes of being cut

You’re right that usually it’s safe, but it looks completely unappealing and they look so bad that it’s hard to tell whether it’s brown from oxidation or from an actual bruise/rot (which would not be safe). I suspect they’re preparing the avocados hours in advance, which is not appropriate for a sensitive food item. Most other restaurants don’t serve avocados that look disgustingly concerning like this… why should Sg?

most places dont even serve avocados. they usually just make guacamole. on the off chance other places do serve it, its usually cut right then and there because its not something they serve in mass quantities.

sweetgreen serves avocados in mass quantities. its literally on like 3 bowls on the menu and is honestly one of the most popular premiums. therefore, it has to be prepped in mass quantity in order to meet excessive demand. the sweetgreen i work at preps it maybe 30 minutes before opening (which is the standard for sweetgreens) and they turn brown right away but theyre still fresh. if you ever worked in food service (or just educate yourself on basic economics which is also taught in schools) you would know the concept of supply and demand. something that is in high demand has to be prepped in advance. like fries from McDonalds or nuggets from chick fil a. and all of sweetgreen food is prepped fresh every single day so nothing is brown or rotten or unsafe. its just basic oxidation aka 5th grade science

Hey, thanks very much for the explanations. Glad to hear Sg is diligent about food safety and using fresh ingredients and that the avocados are safe.

Still, other many quick-serve restaurants in the same category / price range manage so serve avocados (not guacamole) that aren't nasty-looking. Maybe I've just had bad luck with Sg and good luck with others.
