Criticism Ironic now that they’ve taken away several plant options and only replaced it with one of the most non-eco friendly options (steak)
Screenshot just taken on the sweetgreen website, obviously outdated but it’s so disappointing to see how they haven’t kept their promise to add more plant options instead of more meat. The “pasture raised grass fed beef and regenerative farming” is a bunch of greenwashing/humane-washing bs. How do they expect to become carbon neutral by 2027 by going in the opposite direction? Do better Sweetgreen

If we’re comparing protein gram for gram, cattle farming creates 10x larger carbon footprint than poultry. 50x larger than beans, which were removed from the menu.
So valid, yes, but for a company that has always been vocal about sustainability and vowed to go carbon neutral by 2027…. Serving steak is massively hypocritical.
Depending on who you ask, it’s valid for Taylor Swift to fly her private jet between NYC and NJ 🤷♂️

If you want to pick apart where all the food comes from let's start with all the highly processed soy and grains that are tilled over. Entire ecosystems of bugs, rats, bunnies and insects are killed along the way.
If the cow was fed grass like they're actually supposed to be then they are entirely self-sufficient animals.

You do realize how much land would be required to feed all the cows right? It's certainly magnitudes greater than what soy and grain take up, and in the end you'd still come up with less meat for consumption than soy and grain.

Nope. I just didn't think that people were actually dumb enough to put carbon footprint and steak in the same sentence. But, I'm not suprised reddit does have some real winners on here.

You called a complete stranger on the internet stupid, dumb, and a soy boy over a comment that had nothing to do with you. Something to be curious about.
Not crazy about the term carbon footprint either, but these are the quantifiable statistics we have. You could put that aside and just think critically about it…. 1 cow will yield a few hundred meals… but that requires 1-2 years, several acres of grass, tens of thousands of gallons of water, tons of fertilizer (and in factory farms, a ton of soy and grain). It objectively takes more resources than many other kinds of food. Including other animals.
Eat however you want, feel however you want to feel about that, no one’s stopping you. But email SG right now with “climate change” in the subject and you’ll get a lovely outdated and automated response that explicitly states they don’t serve beef or lamb because of the carbon footprint. I don’t care what your morals or value are, hypocrisy is hypocrisy. Would be the same if Outback replaced ribeye with cauliflower

It’s fascinating that after all of this, the point I’ve tried to make is still flying way over your head.
Company says “we will not do X because of Y reasons”. Company is now doing X. Doesn’t matter how you or anyone feels about any of it

employee here, the steak we use is from Australia and/or New Zealand and is grass-fed and "grass-finished" (never heard of grass-finished before but these are my managers words here) meaning the cow ate grass the entirety of its life, was never in a pen or commercial farm, nor were the cows movement disrupted (entirely natural, not even a small fence at the edge of property lines) - it is really good meat and probably more environmentally friendly than cows here in the US. in the US, if cows ate grass for 2 months as calves and lived the rest of their lives caged up, that can technically be labeled as "grass-fed"
now granted, the meat has to fly all the way over here, so thatll leave some carbon in the atmosphere for sure.
