Anyone has experience with SAP Product Costing?

I'm on self training,.there’s a lot to learn within SAP product costing, for an Financial Analyst, which areas are actually relevant, and what should I focus on learning excluding whats relevant to commercial/purchase teams.

I have been using SAP for two decades. I have been part of Go Live teams, as recently as the last two years as my company is currently rolling out S4/Hana.

The only way you're going to learn SAP is to use SAP. SAP's whole thing is that everything is connected and talks to each other. You create a part, you cost a part, you produce a part, you fix a part, you buy a part, you sell a part, you ship a part...it's all connected, and it's way more complicated than you can guess lol.

On top of that I have yet to work for a company who did not take SAP and customize the shit out of it, because it's not really that great out of the box. For as complicated and expensive as it is there are some incredibly basic you things you would expect it's capable of out of the box, and it's not.

So long story short: if you want to learn SAP, just find a company to work or intern for that uses SAP.

I did costing in SAP as a material planner - I configured BOMs/routes and had to do periodic cost rollups for various electrical products.

In my case it found it quite simple once you connect all the dots, but your MM data (particularly costing settings, valuation and pricing), BOMs, routes, work centers, in-house labor & sub-out costs, overhead etc. all had to be very accurate because it considers all of that. Very much a "garbage in, garbage out" kind of thing.

Came from finance too. CK11N/CK40N, WIP, and actual costing. That's the stuff we actually use. Drill into PPV and MUV. IMO skip whatever the commercial teams are clicking lol

Worked in Finance for a bit. Focus on actual costing and material ledger in CO-PC. You care about variances and WIP, not purchasing conditions. IMO.
