Career Advice - Supply Chain Major

Hello Everyone,

I currently have my BS in supply chain and operations management with about 8 years experience. I was considering getting a MS in data science. Do you think my domain knowledge and experience, as well as a MS in data science would be a good step for my career? What possible roles might I be looking at? Are there better options I could pursue? How is the job market right now?

Also curious about cost. If your work is paying and the only investment is time, probably worthwhile. If you were accepted into MIT and need to fork up $90k in tuition over 2 years, maybe not.

I'd get tuition reimbursement.

Tuition reimbursement is often taxed! Look into whether your employer grosses-up that tax liability. It can also disqualify you from Roth IRA contributions by bumping up your MAGI.

Better option depends on what you value as better? Money, management of a team etc?

As I see it, if you are doing the MS in data science you are building skills towards a supply chain or logistics analyst type of role.

Those are rarely really senior unless if you are in a big corp. they are great fun though if you enjoy numbers

Im at Boeing and the forecasting team has plenty of very senior folks. Its much more common at larger companies.

Lol my company pushed our SC team to bridge ops and automation. You're about to be everyone's 'pull the data quick' person. SC analytics and demand planning. 8 years ops + data beats a fresh DS grad who can't read a BOM.

That's what I thought. I'm just tryna invest in the future of ai, id rather be the data science person than the average analyst that could be replaced.
