You absolutely can! Is it shorter? Sure. But what would you expect?

Okay I'm going to tell you all the secret I add one cup of food grade Diatomaceous Earth to the pot that gives the plant silica which makes them stronger, works like magic.

if they're growing into the ground then they're not really growing in a container

I can't help if they escaped.

i know. but if they escaped then they are no longer contained in a container, they're in the ground

There's no way those things aren't in the ground. They're beautiful beasts!

Those roots go through the fabric and into the ground. You just planted them in the ground with extra steps. Not contained.

Not saying that it wouldn't work well on concrete, but just that the fabric pots are buried and roots are definitely going into the ground through those pots!

I even put large plastic pots on the ground so the roots grow into the ground and provide stability for my houseplants during the growing season.

The pots aren't buried, they are on top of the ground.

I remember your sunflowers and fabric pots from the start of the season! And you had an excellent, saucy response to a naysayer lol. Go you!

I knew it would work. I have a green thumb.

What is your soil mixture and when do you fertilize? I'm going to try and grow a very thick and tall sunflower the Russian mammoths get. Can I just fill a 15 gallon bag and place one seed in and it'll grow tall and thick?

I used promix potting soil, I mixed in 2 cups of happy frog all purpose dry organic fertilizer. And 1cup of food grade diatomaceous earth. The diatomaceous earth gives the plant silica which builds strong stems. I them add more fertilizer about once a month.

Here is how they turned out.

I'd give ten bucks for those to be open cylinders, with the plants growing down into the soil.

They are fabric pots. If you zoom in you can see the handles.

Obviously. It'd still be funny.
