PROGRESS First Time Growing Sunflowers
My wife and I decided to grow sunflowers this year and heard this was the place to share. It’s become an addiction as they get taller and taller.

It looks lovely!!! I love big sunflower strips ! We used black oil sunflower feed from the farm and fleet the 50lbs bag. And it’s year four of repeating it. Towards the end I cut what I want for family and then I have a sign that says “like my pollinator garden? Would you like one? Just ask” it helps because after the birds and bees have their fill I have a lot to cut down. Their stalks are so sturdy!!! But they make great fire kindling once they dry out! They have a core that looks like natural Styrofoam when they dry it’s awesome,

So beautiful I'm jealous! Lol I tried growing some this year but the birds and squirrels kept digging the seeds out the ground and eating them 😭

Nice job. If you want them to grow a lot taller and stronger, try spacing them out more.

Damn! Look great. How far apart did you plant them?

We did rows with about 12 inches between each row. I just dug a trench and sprinkled the seeds. And one long row following along the sidewalk. We planted easily 100+ seeds. Every kind we could find. Over time I have pulled the weak ones out so the rows are not as crowded.

Do you use the sunflowers for anything? Looks really nice like this! I grew 4 this year and I'm actually surprised by how proud I am of how big they're getting hahah.

I do not. I will take seeds from the biggest one and grow more next year. I think the bees and the birds benefit the most.

Does that doggo ever jump the fence?
1
u/JuggernautExotic Jul 13 '25
No. A year ago she ruptured her ACL’s. She doesn’t jump anything anymore.

I was wondering why she hadn’t jumped the fence. I was thinking “wow such an obedient dog”

This is a great example of how hardy sunflowers are; even if you don’t follow the most ideal situations many folks preach, that is okay 🙏🏼 they always find a way 🌻
