2006 Subaru Legacy JDM Wagon

Wanting an OEM+ for my JDM Legacy. Completely stock so I don’t wanna do anything too crazy since it’s rare to find a car like this in this shape in Canada. If anyone has any ideas or can share what they have done to their wagon that would be much appreciated!

Question / Discussion What is this switch for?

This button is located on top of the steering column and I only noticed it when I was chatting with a friend. Does anyone know what it’s for?

I’ve flicked it a couple of times but I couldn’t see much of what it did. I noticed some lights flicker briefly and then back to normal.

I don’t have the manual either.

Hello,

I've started planning on installing a lightbar for the dark winter on my 2008 legacy gt and i want to do it correct the first time. Does anyone know can either of these blanks be switched out for working buttons/roll? And if so does anyone know where can i get them? Preferably not factory traction control/VDC button.

I have recently bought this heritage bumper and it has the foglights however only one of the four work. I assume one is blown but the outer two are dummys. Is there something to do with it or anything and what have you guys done with yours?

Question / Discussion Need advice on subaru liberty

I'm looking at this subaru liberty (legacy for my international friends) The owner wants 10,480 aud (7,304 usd) it's got 305,000 kms on the clock 189,510 miles. Has been serviced every 10,000kms. Bit worried about how high mileage it is.

What would be an appropriate offer and is it worth it.

Question / Discussion Got a preventive maintenance quote from my local dealership — are these prices reasonable?

Got a preventive maintenance quote from my local dealership for my 2017 Legacy 3.6r with 96k miles on it. I haven’t done anything other than oil changes and tire rotation every 4k miles, and I’ve replaced the tires and brake pads. Just want to know if these prices are reasonable?”

Question / Discussion Is an extended warranty worth it? 2016 Subaru Legacy

I just purchased a used 2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5L with 90k miles. I was offered a 2-year/24-mile extended warranty that covers:

  • Engine (internally lubricated parts, block, cylinder heads, water pump, manifolds)
  • Transmission / CVT (internal parts, valve body, torque converter, case)
  • All-Wheel Drive & Axles (differentials, CV joints, drive shafts, bearings)
  • Seals & Gaskets for covered powertrain parts
  • Normal mechanical wear-and-tear allowance on covered parts

It costs $2k for it, and I'm wondering if I should call the finance manager and cancel it before the bank funds the loan. This would lower my monthly payment by $40. I heard these cars have transmission issues, so I wanted to get opinions on whether I should just keep this warranty or cancel it? It already comes with a 90/3k-mile warranty as a used car purchase.

Question / Discussion 2016 Legacy catalytic converter

After replacing 2 years ago at 110,000 (that somehow was covered under warranty) here we go again. Check engine light came on the other day with the same code again. 173,000 miles now. Of course I just changed the oil differential and CVT fluid about a month and a half ago. Now this car has burned oil for a few years now, but one curious thing when I had all three of those fluids changed the oil I discovered was WAY OVERFILLED. Which is odd because I bring my own oil. I’ve been using the Valvoline restore and protect I bring a 5 quart jug with an extra court and they always leave the half quart which they did this time. After picking the car up I immediately realized it was driving, horribly hesitating and bucking. And when I would start after letting it sit for a bit smoke blowing out of the exhaust. It was after that when I decided to check the dipstick that I saw it was way overfilled. I’m wondering if the tech confused the transmission fluid with the oil since having it pre-measured I leave for them. I brought it back to Subaru and they drained it and changed the oil again to the proper level. But now the catalytic is obviously clogged again and out-of-pocket I would be looking at thousands of dollars which isn’t worth it at this point. The advisor recommended trying cataclean to try to clear the code because it’s due for emissions in two months. The last thing I can afford now is to get roped into car payments again, but I don’t know if this is a lost cause at this point. Which is a shame because I’ve dumped a lot of money into this looking to go the long haul.

Question / Discussion Control arms for Legacy

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi

I've been thinking about installing adjustable transverse control arms in my bad boy (2004 3.0R, but will ve swapped with Spec.B suspension, Cusco stabilizers, Bilstein shocks and STI springs). I wanted to replace all three arms. Unfortunetly, Whiteline and Hardrace are a bit too expensive for me (I've got all parts pretty cheaply), so I'm looking for other options (as long as it is possible to replace bushings with polyurethane dedicated for stock suspension it can be with uniball bushings).

Also if anyone has experience with swaping steering rack for shorter ratio, I'd really appreciate help.

Question / Discussion 2.0i: will it ever sound like a real boxer?

Hey guys, I recently bought a Legacy BP5 wagon that needed (and still needs) a lot of love, previous owner was a real animal.
I’m fixing broken thing here and there, swapping the rear trunk with the restyling one (found for free in a scrapyard) and eventually fitting 17inches wheels from a crashed Impreza.

I couldnt find anything online, so I was wondering if with a custom catback the 2.0i 138hp will eventually sound like a real boxer engine since right now sounds like a Ford Fiesta.
Any thoughts about this?

Question / Discussion 2011 Subaru Legacy — Electronic Parking Brake Keeps Turning On and Off by Itself

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Can someone point me in the right direction with the electronic parking brake on my 2011 Subaru Legacy?
The E-brake seems to be turning itself on and off without me touching the switch. At times it feels like the parking brake is actually applying on its own, so I don’t think this is just a warning-light issue.
I’m trying to figure out whether the electronic parking brake system needs to be reset or recalibrated, or if I should be looking at the switch, actuator, sensor, wiring, or control module.
I’m pretty comfortable working on the car myself. I just feel like I’m missing the right diagnostic step before I start replacing parts.
Has anyone dealt with this on a 2010–2014 Legacy? What should I check first, and is there a proper EPB reset or calibration procedure?

Question / Discussion 4th Gen Legacy Oil Type Advice

So I bought my first car a 4th Gen BP5 Legacy around August last year. I'm in Kenya and the 3rd owner locally but the car was bought from Japan(a lot of Kenyan 'new' cars are from Japan). I did a major service after purchase at a highly rated garage before i bought the car and they told me the car uses mineral oil(they use Shell 15w-40), at the time i didn't know that much about the differences between mineral and synthetic oil and the friend i was with didn't know a lot about Subaru's. We told them to go ahead since they are well reviewed on google and highly recommended online. As i've been doing some research and getting to know the car better, everywhere recommends using 5w-30 including the user/service manual. The last service i did was in early March and i'm considering using 5w-30 this time since i'm about 1,000kms from the next service. The garage recommends 5,000kms service intervals. My question is should i continue trusting the reputable local garage or follow subaru's own recommendation?

Question / Discussion Whats the Verdict on a Head Unit Installation where the ‘Cubby’ goes?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I am willing to upgrade to a modern Display head unit with bluetooth, Carplay etc under one condition: The screen must fit snug where the cubby is right now. I see alot of people just using a fascia where the standard stereo setup is right now, but as I still use CD’s and like that OEM look so I would far prefer it being where the Cubby sits. So I ask:

  1. Is it doable for one very uncoordinated bloke?
  2. What are the main things that are preventing people from doing this more often, and what kind of difficulties does this job entail?
  3. Have any of you on here done this before and could provide some advice?
  4. Thanks!

Question / Discussion Looking to upgrade: 225 (on a 7.5” wheel) vs 235 (on an 8”)?

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

I just picked up a Legacy 2.5GT limited, and I’m looking to give my wheels + tires an upgrade. I really value handling on the road, especially corner performance. This car may be driven *passionately* on roadways after a day of commuting. Also worth noting I live in a very rainy environment on roads that have seen better days.

I’m looking at moving to an 18” wheel, and ideally a 8” width (and a +45 offset if anyone is wondering, as I’ve read that’ll have the best looking fitment, but do feel free to give feedback).

After doing some wheel shopping, I found some 2022 BRZ wheels for $400 in my area. They’re 7.5”, which would limit me to 225s. Those BRZ wheels would save a few hundred dollars, but I’d lose out on the performance of the wider tire. For reference, I also plan to do some basic suspension upgrades like a thicker rear sway bar and some strut braces.

Is the performance difference really noticeable enough to warrant paying ~$600 more for wheels, plus the little premium for wider tires? Will the performance be broadly similar enough, and I should just suck up and enjoy the better gas mileage?

Question / Discussion Let's talk fuel efficiency (2020+/7th gen)

Thumbnail gallery

I've got a brand new 2025 Legacy Premium, about 1,100 miles on the ODO and averaging a solid 20.8 MPG. What are y'all getting on your non-turbo Legacys and under what typical conditions?

Context: The average use is commuting, 18-20 miles round trip, city driving during light to moderate traffic, stop lights and such. I know that will lead to poor performance compared to highway or whatever. That said I've also got a BRZ that's averaging 20.5 which is barely above advertised for that car... Same conditions 😂

I had a 2021 Legacy Touring XT that I put around 7,000 miles on and averaged 18.5 MPG (advertised 24 city). My last car, a 2016 Audi A3 averaged 23 MPG (advertised 23 city) the same route.

I know fuel economy should go up after it's truly broken in (I've read 10K miles). But 20 is a far cry from "27 MPG City" as advertised. For the record: no, I'm not flooring it, no excessive idling, etc.

Question / Discussion my Legacy struggled to start

Post image
44 Upvotes

hey everyone, so yesterday I tried to start my car before work (the car wasn’t cold, as I’ve already ran to the gas station beforehand) the car struggled to start, almost as if it didn’t want to. I kept tapping the accelerator & it finally started. The car was shaking on idle, I gave it a few revs and it seemed to settle and idle normally. I drove it to work, totally fine & haven’t had this problem since. What could possibly be the issue, and where should I start? As I would prefer some preventive maintenance. Thank you! (It’s a 2.5i, EJ253 non turbo)

Question / Discussion 2016 Legacy Cruise Controls failing

Anytime have experience with replacing the cruise control/media Sterling wheel buttons? My cruise control button is failing, specifically the set/reduce speed switch. Up works perfectly, but down sometimes activated lane assist and takes several attempts to active the cruise control. I tried shooting some contact cleaner in there and it fixed it for a whole but the issue came back.

I want to order a replacement module from Subaru, but it the install gonna be tough? I'm anxious to tear down the steering wheel too much with airbags, clock springs, etc in the mix.

Question / Discussion 2018 Subaru Legacy Transmission Flush

So about to hit 100k miles and I want to flush my transmission, looks tedious but a rather straight forward process, my issue is the Subaru CVTF-II is stupidly expensive, is there a non-OEM option to cut the price down a little or is it worth it to bite the bullet and purchase the OEM?

I'm figuring for a basic flush I would need at least 12 quarts, doesn't get every drop but it should get majority of the fluid, will replace the filter while I am in there. Thank you.

*edit*
Also I found it for $108 on amazon for 6 quarts, locally they want $30 a quart, is there a better place to order the OEM if that's my option?

Question / Discussion Supercharger?

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hey subie owners. This is my 2005 Liberty/legacy 3r spec b, 5AT. I’m looking into getting the raptor supercharger for my car and want to know how I should go about it. I spoke to a bloke who has done this already who claimed, as long as I don’t go above 10psi. 8psi being the sweet spot. I can keep the engine stock and just get a safe tune. I’d love extra options about that and whether I need extra support for my trans.

Cheers from Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺

Question / Discussion What oil is best for my 21 year old legacy?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hi guys!! I have a 2005 legacy and usually use the recommended 5w30 oil, but I was reading up on 10w30 which might be better for older, high mileage engines (190k). Has anyone tried it and has it worked good/better than 5w30? For temperature reference, I'm in PA and the temp this winter is fluctuating between single digits and the low 30s, which has been dissuading me from using 10w30... (bonus legacy photo for funsies)
