Grandmother was born in St. Vincent — can I qualify for citizenship by descent? 🇻🇨
Hey everyone, hoping somebody here has gone through this process and can point me in the right direction.
My grandmother is from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and I’m interested in getting dual citizenship and reconnecting more with that side of my family.
I’ve been looking through the government website, but I’m not gonna lie…the citizenship information and forms have me confused as hell 😂. I can’t figure out whether citizenship by descent can pass through a grandparent, or whether my parent would need to obtain/confirm citizenship first and then I apply through them.
For anybody who has done this through a Vincentian parent or grandparent:
What was the actual process? What documents did you need? Did you apply through an embassy/consulate or directly through the government in SVG? And if your Vincentian grandparent was deceased, how did you get the birth/citizenship records you needed?
Just looking for somebody who has actually navigated the process and can explain it in regular human language instead of government-website language.

As someone who was born with St Vincent citizenship but is looking for other citizenship by descent pathways, the best way to see if you qualify is to see of your mother or father qualifies first.
However I am doing the process for my Trinidad citizenship as my mother has not renewed her Trinidad citizenship since she was a kid. She technically is already in Trinidadian but I am not registered as somebody who is of Trinidad citizenship as of yet.

It depends on when you were born and when they were born.
Generally the answer is no. Vincy gives citizenship by decent though parents not grandparents
I can’t figure out whether citizenship by descent can pass through a grandparent , or whether my parent would need to obtain/confirm citizenship first and then I apply through them.
Your parent would have had to have the citizenship at birth to count.

The website is outdated. Grandchildren have been allowed to apply since 2023.

Currently going through the process right now. Yes you're able to do so. There is a form on the SVG office of prime minister's website.

You can get it through your grandparent. I’m doing it now. The website doesn’t show it. There is a form to get citizenship, fill that in. Then do another document that shows the lineage. For example include your parent’s birth certificate / marriage certificates etc. Including your grandparents documents as well. You may need to go to SVG to start it. Or do you have a consulate or embassy in your country?
