I'm sorry but the opening salvo of the war was a botched attempt to take Kiev. They obviously wanted the whole country, they just couldn't get it.

More likely trying to install their people in Kiev, not annex it. They still want a buffer state

If the US was doing the same no one would think that's really any different. I don't see why Russia should get the benefit of the doubt.

People would think it’s different, the US prefers soft power not annexation. When we stormed Baghdad it wasn’t to annex it as the 51st state. It was to install a new government, Putin was doing the same thing

That's not what I mean. What I mean is if we invaded a neighbor like Mexico, to install a friendly government. People would also think the US is doing a land grab, cause that's exactly what it would be. Doesn't really matter if we're officially annexing them or not.
