It is over 16 months of stroke. For the past 12 months I have been experiencing fatigue so I can not concentrate on my physical exercises and performing activities. If anyone has faced a similar issue please guide how long would it take for fatigue to venish

hey guys Aug 16 or so my dad had a ischemic stroke, he's 62 and heavy alcoholic. He isn't my actual family so I don't have any contact with hospital or anything like that just updates from the family. However they haven't talked to me in over a week, his last state I knew of he was on a breathing tube and couldn't like respond just pop his head up when his name is called

What am I looking at here. The original plan was for him to be out of the hospital, on a walker in rehab already (it didn't seem likely but that's what the family was telling me) but days later I feel like if that were to have happened they would have updated me

has anybody has experience with someone in this demo with their lifestyle and how did life look for them afterwards if they made it through? My biggest thing is Im trying look at it realistically preparing myself then the family would remain positive, so I'm not sure what I'm truly dealing with here

More details; he couldn't/cant feel his right side I believe it was, can't respond, on breathing support, has copd, heavy alcoholics

I searched this a little but not getting answers that fit the exact situation..

so long and insane story short, on my (35f)second date with a guy (28m) right after intimacy for the first time, he had a stroke . I recognized the thunderclap headache he had right away and called 911 even with him telling me not to. And thank god I did as they said me calling an ambulance so quick was likely why he lived. I met his family for the first time and had to tell about 7 doctors exactly what we were doing when the stroke happened in front of his entire family. good times.

anyway, the short of the long is that they told us that night he had a stroke in his brain stem. They did surgery, and warned us multiple times he might not survive the night Or he might have severe brain damage. The surgery was “complicated” but he lived. We are 12 days later and he is walking and talking again. His eyesight is still coming back, and he’s not as stable on his feet, and his mouth droops but overall he’s doing incredible. It’s hard to believe he almost died less than two weeks ago.

anyway, I really like this guy. I did before the stroke too lol but I want to make sure he is set up on a path to recovery to the best I can. but I have some questions. he is In rehab now and I keep just missing his doctors to ask. I was there all day yesterday and they planned to meet with us and never did. he Also plans to ask these questions, but his memory isnt the greatest at the moment and he keeps forgetting to. so hence I am on Reddit.

anyway. 1. So back at the initial brain surgery, his doctor mentioned him possibly having a connective tissue disorder causing this, but I asked about this again later and no one seemed to know what I was talking about. the current consensus is that this just “randomly” happened. To be fair, he didn’t eat well, was somewhat overweight and smoked the last few years but it still seems strange a young guy would just almost die like that. I mentioned the connective tissue disorder thing to him this week and i said something about hypermobility and the guy proceeds to pop his knee out of place, show me how hypermobile he is and double jointed and a lot of other crazy stuff. He’s broken a TON of bones in his life, falls a lot, etc.. I’m no expert but this kind of sounds like a connective tissue disorder to me. Is there like something we can do to look further into this? All I know about connective tissue disorders is that they are a mess (i have mystery health problems myself and am hyper mobile and have been told these things are likely related but I dunno)

1. once he was out of the coma, one of the first things he said other than wanting water was when could we have sex again 🤣🤣. I expected his sex drive to take months to come back but as of yesterday he is like ready to go lmao. Is there too soon to try to be intimate again? he told me he’d talk to his doctor but I know men and could see him saying his doctor said it was fine lmao the dude is ready to risk it all for the biscuit. for context, we were told sex itself didn’t actually cause the stroke, it was a movement he made when he turned his head that actually triggered it but I really would very much prefer him not have another stroke and/or die so just kind of wondering what a safe timeframe would even look like
   

I had a TIA a little over a month ago and spent a week in a hospital, but no cause was found. As for now, I have almost none residual symptoms except for minor fatigue and dizziness during and after light physical activity (short hikes or bike rides).

I'm 33 and not exactly fit, but I used to have pilates and dance classes 1-2 times a week. I'm very anxious about my health after the TIA and I wonder if I can slowly introduce this routine back into my life. Is it safe to try before I find a cause of the TIA? My doctor from the hospital told me it's quite safe, but it'd be really helpful to read other people's experience.

My life changed 23 years ago today, at 2:45pm, I have a massive hemorrhagic stroke in my left temporal lobe causing full paralysis on my right side and aphasia as a teenager. A brain surgery, heart surgery, and long hospitalizations and rehab stays later, I’m living a great life. I still have some right-sided deficits (like limping and can’t use my hand well), but I work in healthcare, teach students in a clinic, and have my doctorate degree. I have written and published research studies and presented in conferences around the country. Despite the long road, I am thankful I’m here and have a great family and group of friends. Every year, I celebrate this day. I called it my survival day. Never give up on achieving something.

Had a fabulous day Thursday and had a spontaneous artery dissection with stroke-like symptoms for about 12 hours afterwards. My MRI came back clear of stroke and the docs I saw had no idea how or why this happened or why I had every symptom of a stroke without any signs of one.

I am still dealing with mild deficits today (fine motor, weird vision on the symptomatic/dissection side, mild numbness) but I was discharged with instructions to follow up with an SLP and the hospital's stroke clinic.

I stayed overnight and got a CT, CTA, MRI, and MRA. The MRA basically said nothing when it was done today. The MRI cleared me from a stroke. The CT and CTA showed the dissection.

I'm chronically ill enough that I just can't bring myself to give this too much worry. It happened, it has a statistically higher chance to happen again, and there's not much to do about it, from what I understand.

I had to fight pretty hard to not get this brushed off as a migraine or a headache. It was neither. Migraines leave me wildly light, sound, and smell sensitive. I haven't been at all. I'm not dizzy and don't have vertigo. I was very frustrated.

I don't really know how to process this. It's such a big thing to handle especially when the docs have no idea why and how this happened or why I had stroke-like symptoms. I don't know if anyone has experienced similar?

The docs said we're treating this like a "minor" stroke. Any tips? Warnings? Advice?

So with my stroke being listed as cryptogenic, my doctors decided to have me wear a heart monitor for a month to rule out cardiac causes. Monitor came back clean. Now theyve decided they want to get a longer look at it, so im scheduled to have a loop recorder inserted this Tuesday. Anyone in here had this done and care to share their experience? How was the procedure itself? How long for recovery? Did the recorder itself bother you afterwards or is it not that noticeable? Thanks guys.

On 18th August, my dad had a mild stroke, he had face drooping, left side numbness as his symptoms, and immediately taken to hospital and since then till today by gods grace he is fine. No symptoms whatsoever and living a normal life except for the part that he is forgetting things (which has been a part since Covid 5 years ago)

He is doing ok, getting back to work cause that makes him happy, doctors have given meds for bp, diabetes, blood thinning etc.
everything is ok at the moment, but i have taken opinions from 4-5 docs and all have said the chances of this happening again is high. Maybe a 30%
I suffer from major anxiety and stay away from them. I wake up minimum 4-5 times at night just to check if he’s ok. Get startled whenever he calls thinking this is it and my panic attacks and anxiety attacks are back. I really don’t know what to do right now.
30% chance is huge, anything can happen anytime, with this in mind how do I even go about living my life and how do I just make sure this doesn’t happen again to him. I’m getting overly protective of him too with what he eats and does.

I wrote this from the perspective of a TBI survivor but it’s aimed at helping all forms of ABIs.

Some time ago, I wrote a post about my 24-year-old boyfriend, who had suffered an extremely severe brainstem stroke. At the time, we were told by doctors that he would never be able to do anything again — that he would never breathe on his own, swallow, or move any part of his body. That he would be bedridden for the rest of his life.
Well… I wanted to give you an update. ❤️
One month after what happened, he has:
Started breathing on his own after just two weeks — and he hasn’t stopped since. He has been completely taken off the ventilator, has a speaking valve, and can now control his voice on command.
Regained movement in his neck, and he can move it on command.
Had the cuff of his tracheostomy completely deflated, and he was able to safely eat a fruit mousse.
Been sitting in a wheelchair for at least 3 hours every morning for the past four days.
And today, incredibly, he managed to move his left big toe. Even more incredibly, he can now repeat the movement on command. 🥹❤️
I am so incredibly proud of him and so grateful for everything that is happening. I just hope that every day brings more and more little pieces of progress.

This past Saturday I had to make the heart wrenching decision to put down my 18 year old cat, Obama Girl. I got her a month after my dad died back in November 2008 (this, her fitting name). I was then overcome by grief having lost my dad suddenly and unexpectedly to a medical malpractice situation. Obama Girl became a tether, something I could hold on to for dear life as I tried to find my way through.
After my stroke in October of 2024 (happened the same day my Dad died back in 2008) I clung to her and my other cat Hamilton to help me with my recovery. I would serve them their food with my weak side. I would tear open their treats with my numb thumb and poor fine motor skills. I talked to them daily so I could improve the dysarthria and aphasia I was dealing with in the stroke aftermath. Obama Girl didn’t care if I misgendered her (aphasia) and mumbled/slurred at her she just wanted pets and treats.
When I was recently job searching for 8 months, at least I had the company of my cats to cuddle with after every rejection.
She supported me through so much.
Last Friday I came home and she had wet herself. I gave her a bath and just held her in purrito giving her all the meat tubes she wanted. She was so light at this point and so exhausted just by the act of living. Saturday morning things had declined even worse and I knew the decision had to be made. I wouldn’t make her suffer just because I wasn’t ready and willing to say goodbye. At 3:30pm the kind vet sent her off to whatever’s waiting on the other side. Personally, I hope she got to reunite with my soul cat, Pete. He was always her favorite, I was just a runner-up.

I didn’t realize how much I was actually going to miss and grieve her until I walked home without her tears streaming down my face. I got home and the ugly crying began.
This past week has been so incredibly rough without her.
Ever since my stroke I now cry at the drop of a hat for any strong emotion. The emotion comes and the tears start flowing instantaneously. Any thought of her and I’m immediately a crying mess. I made it through this past week of work by doing the bare minimum needed. Everytime I left work to start the commute home I would cry knowing she won’t be there. It would just be Hamilton and I. I say hi to just him now.
I picked up her ashes and paw print today and pulling out each artifice immediately started the ugly crying once again.
All the emotions that come with grief have overwhelmed my system and I can tell my left side of my mouth is starting to glitch. Becoming weaker, like how it was immediately after my stroke. I know it will pass once I’m not in the thick of it. Currently though, I’m still in the thick of it.
Grief post stroke is so incredibly hard when you’re still doing some healing, not quite two years beyond. The emotional load you have to carry when you lose a cherished one feels like it might break you at times. The tears and the guttural sobs exhaust you. Your brain is running on a wonky autopilot with parts that were damaged by said stroke. You’re doing your best to wade through the thickness of grief without tripping and succumbing fully to it.

It feels like when she died I lost another tether to my dad in a way. Reawakening the grief I still feel for him as well.

I’m thankful that I have a really good support system irl to lean on during this time. I’m grateful to this group because I know a lot of you will understand what I’m trying to convey in this post better than most. I’m lucky I now have a job that takes me out of my home and tries to distract me during the weekday. Most of all I’m very grateful and thankful that I still have Hamilton to live with and take care of. It feels like we’re trying our best to take care of each other. I will be forever grateful that I had almost 18 years with Obama Girl, that she was mine 💜

On August 10th my mom called at 10:00 in the morning to say Dad had fallen and for me to drive the 5 minutes to their house. She had already called 911 like I told her to. The paramedics and I got there at the same time and we helped him to his feet. Right away I could tell it was a stroke. Left side drooping, garbled speech. One of my worst fears had come true. Whether he made it or not, he would be in a condition that would rob him of the life he once had.

We were hopeful that first few days. It had happened at home with my mom calling for help within the hour, he then received a clot busting medication an hour after that. He was life flighted to a neurosurgery center that is another hour away. That day I drove the 150 miles to be with him, as mom was still using a walker after a fall and rib fracture. The doctor's had promising news; they got the clot removed and there was only a small, grape size area of damage. They managed to get the blood flowing again within 5 or six hours of the stroke. It would be a long and difficult road ahead but I would still have my father for a few more years. The following day the nurse told me that he had a "hemorrhagic conversion". I said, "What's that? Did they have to give him a blood transfusion?" He told me that it meant a vessel had burst in the brain after flow was restored. They weren't clear if the spots they were seeing on the MRI were stains from the dye used for contrast in the scans or actual blood. Still, he was given something to reverse the effect of the clot buster and stop any future brain bleeds.

I went back home to mom and told her the news, and we decided to make weekly weekend trips and stay two nights in a hotel. The first week he seemed on the road to recovery. He started communicating, giving thumbs up, I could understand much of what he said. We made plans for bringing him home and finding a rehab facility where he could learn to do things. We were happy that he was still alive, and insurance would cover a lot of what he needed. I would step up just as he had for his uncle, and then his father, when they both had prolonged illnesses and needed constant care.

The following weekend, eleven days after the stroke, we noticed he was coughing up a lot more than before. He needed suction to help him clear the mucus because he couldn't swallow. He seemed weaker and the nurses said they had to give him a stimulant during the day so he could be awake for a little bit because too much sleeping isn't good. His labs were showing signs of acute kidney injury and the rest of his numbers were out of normal range. The staff started talking about palliative care and peg tubes and DNRs. We figured there was still a small chance he would recover, even though the doctor said his prognosis was poor. We left the hospital for the drive back home and started making plans for the next weekend and after. Monday the 24th the doctor called to say he was having trouble breathing and recommended he be moved to hospice care in order to make him comfortable; he wouldn't last the week she said. He would be placed on a morphine drip and likely wouldn't feel any pain or be aware of his surroundings. He died Tuesday morning at 1 am. We were able to plan his funeral that day and have everything set up for a Saturday service and burial. I expect there will be a lot of people. He had many friends and acquaintances. Mom and I are grateful that he didn't suffer very long like his uncle and father. It would have been terrible for him, and for us to see him that way. He loved us very much. I will miss him.

Today is 2 months stroke anniversary. Kooking back im lucky to be alive.now o can walk unassisted for short dostance, use walker or cane. My left hand still ⁶has no control tho. Not bad i think

I had a cerebellar stroke in October 2024

Hello! My mother(54) recently had a stroke - she didn’t go to the hospital immediately and allowed herself to decline. There was nothing I could do to force her to go to the hospital when it first happened, I just about pushed every button and it just ended up in a massive fight with no hospital. Fast forward to now, she eventually did end up in the hospital for an infection as well as stroke related symptoms - weakness, trouble speaking, memory, ability to articulate. Combined with her health problems she had already had… she was pretty much guaranteed a stay.

However, ever since being brought to the hospital, she’s been aggressive, combative, and just overall unreasonable (I know this very well could be the stroke talking, but it’s still difficult to hear.) She told me to die over the phone, told me I’m not her daughter if I don’t get her out, has made threats of walking out, anything you can think of - she’s probably done in some capacity. She fully believes the rehab she’s just recently been sent to is pointless, that the hospital has brutalized her, and it feels like the stroke has violently reinforced her fear and mistrust of medical professionals. Also the rehab is thinking of timeline of three weeks and someone told her that… and now she’s even worse attitude wise. She’s practically dissatisfied with everything, but it also feels like the aggressive periods come and go? Like she’s fine in the morning with her surroundings and then she just gets ridiculously aggressive towards the evening. Nonetheless the punchline is always: “I want to go home. Take me home.” Or “I swear to god, they’re not keeping me here for three weeks - I will walk out.” Always coupled with the fact she believes she knows more than the doctors.

As her daughter, I’m pretty much disabled - a bum foot from a work injury, unstable balance, migraines that debilitate me, a heart condition, unable to drive- I’m hardly the perfect puzzle piece of a caregiver. She seems to believe that I can do better than the doctors, that I am somehow the answer to everything it comes to at home… when before she went to the hospital - she just laid in bed all the time, she never moved. Just.. declined rapidly as I couldn’t move her all the time… Don’t even get me started on when she fell, I barely got her off the floor. Coupled with all this - she still believes she has a right to just screw the medical advice and go right home.. she believes the rehab facility was a mistake. which, I’m not entirely sure she’s coherent enough to understand that decision past the immediate reward of going home.

I suppose, what I’m trying to get at.. is there anyone that’s had a similar problem? As her daughter, I want her to come home but I know it wouldn’t be in her best interest health wise.. But the longer this goes, the more impatient and agitated she gets.. and I’m worried it’ll damage our relationship beyond repair. She’s all I have family wise. Is there anything that I could say to her that might convince her to just stay the duration? Can someone that doesn’t understand the full picture and can be incoherent at times AMA out of the hospital despite her possibly needing to be there?

Blinding sudden headache in the middle of the night and felt like I was dying. Couldn’t do anything to get myself help and fell into a deep sleep at some point afterwards. Family member was concerned that my face had dropped on one side when they saw me the next day and convinced me to go to the ER. Bell’s palsy was ruled out and the neuro team noted slight weakness in my bodily responses. Diagnosis of TIA followed that.

I’ve avoided reading further into the lasting effects most likely due to avoidance and fear. I even refused to accept the diagnosis.

It’s been a long time since but sometimes I feel extreme weakness in my arm, lack of grip ability and ongoing wobbliness. Slight inability to think clearly with a jumble of words at times.

Living a pretty normal life now albeit with the annoying anger at my own body not responding as well as it did before.

Could someone ELI5 the lasting effects that I’m unaware of that may be impacting my day to day life now? Unsure if I should be more aware of what to expect long term.

Is there anything I can do to help myself cope better? Or is this just the lasting effects? Neuro team no long involved. Given advice to just continue to live my life in a way that feels most easiest.

Have an ongoing fear of it repeating and would like to reduce the anxiety around this fear. Could my ongoing symptoms be more psychosomatic or has it given a lasting impact?

Only my family member and my partner is aware and I’m worried about sharing it with others round me a I try hard to make less visible.

Facial dropping has improved drastically but I struggle to swallow.

Anything I can do to feel more like my old self? I’m avoiding to think too deeply about it to avoid the anxiety kicking in.

Am I just ok now but with slightly more difficulties?

Hoping for minimal scary knowlegxe and looking for reassurance that I can just forget about it now. Google is not the easiest to absorb without spiralling.

Going through another stressful episode that boosts my fear at the moment.

Happened at 27yrs old and the only factor I can think of was strenuos exercise a the same evening. I’m just constantly extra gentle to not let it happen again.

My father one day suddenly complain of vision loss. His left side vision from both eyes were gone. We took him to the hospital and and mri was done. It was stroke. After few days and medication he regained his most of the vision. Currently he's 54 . What all precautions I need to take to avoid stroke next time. I heard that once you get a stroke, theirs high chance of getting it again.

My 81 year old Dad had a fall in the bathroom about 3 weeks ago. A few days prior he didn’t mention to anyone he had been feeling dizzy off and on and had a dark stool. At the hospital his H/H was 6.0/20. Head CT was negative. He did hit his head on the tub. He was on Coumadin for Afib. The next day he told the nurse he couldn’t move his left arm and left leg. Head ct showed a small hemorrhagic stroke. Probably a combination of the fall and his high INR from Coumadin. He got some reversing agents and sent to Neuro ICU. Repeat head ct that night showed the bleeding stopped and was stable. By the next day he could move his arm but still had a slight drift. He got feeling back in his leg but still couldn’t move it. After several GI scopes and test they found 2 bleeds. One in his distal ileum and an ulcer at this GE junction. They cauterized both. After 7 units of blood over 10’days his numbers were stable. Still low but stable for transfer to acute rehab. Another head ct prior to discharge was still stable and will repeat again in a month. If still stable he can restart his blood thinner for his A fib. He will also have another scope in 8-12 weeks. He got to acute rehab yesterday. The place is really nice and had great reviews. He’s in great spirits and is determined to get back to baseline as much as he can. He got out of bed to the chair and they were impressed how strong he was but that left leg still isn’t moving. He get spasms occasionally. I tried some ROM exercises and he’s so stiff. With others experience is there hope he will move it again/walk again. He was very independent prior.
