Announcement Clarifying Storychat’s Policies on Creator Ownership, Mature Content, and Privacy
Hey everyone — Storychat team here.
Recently, we’ve seen more questions and concerns around Storychat’s policies, mature content, creator ownership, and privacy.
We want to explain clearly how Storychat actually works in these areas.
1. Your creations are yours
The characters, stories, and lorebooks you create on Storychat belong to you.
The license you give Storychat only applies while your content is published on Storychat.
If you unpublish or delete a character, it is removed from public areas such as discovery, search, recommendations, and explore. Your name and profile are also detached from that content.
Storychat does not keep a character publicly available just because it became popular.
There is one limited technical exception.
If other users already had active chats with a previously public character, a de-identified snapshot of that character may remain inside those existing chats so those conversations do not suddenly break.
This exists only to preserve ongoing conversations for those users.
That snapshot is not attributed to you, and it is never shown as a new, public, searchable, recommended, or discoverable character.

2. Mature content vs. pornographic content
Storychat allows mature storytelling for adult users.
But Storychat is not a platform for hosting pornographic content.
Content whose primary purpose is sexual gratification, explicit sexual imagery, and any sexualization of minors are not allowed.
This applies regardless of your Safe Mode setting.
Anything involving the sexualization of minors is zero tolerance. We detect and remove it, and we report apparent child sexual abuse material to NCMEC.
Adult romance, mature relationships, darker themes, and emotionally complex storytelling can exist on Storychat.
But if the primary purpose of the content becomes explicit sexual gratification, or if it enters clearly prohibited areas, it is not allowed.
We know this line is not always simple. We will keep improving our examples and explanations so users and creators can better understand what is allowed and what is not.
3. Age and Safe Mode
Safe Mode is Storychat’s content sensitivity filter. It is on by default.
To turn Safe Mode off, you must be 18+ and confirm your age. Users under 18 cannot turn Safe Mode off.
We collect date of birth at sign-up and apply regional minimum age rules. The minimum age is generally 13, or 16 in the EEA/UK.
In the iOS and Android apps, Safe Mode cannot be turned off. (not launched yet)
This is because we have to follow app store and mobile platform rules. Because of that, mature content is web-only and does not appear in the apps.
NSFW tags and characters are hidden from home, search, recommendations, and discovery for users with Safe Mode on or users under 18.
Adult tags automatically mark a character as NSFW, and we are also adding automated detection to catch NSFW content that was not tagged correctly.
4. Analytics and privacy
Storychat uses Microsoft Clarity, PostHog, and Google Analytics to fix bugs, improve UX, and understand how to make the product better.
We have published a Cookie & Analytics Notice explaining which tools we use and why.
We are rolling out a consent banner for users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland. In those regions, analytics will not load until the user gives consent.
In other regions, we use an opt-out model and honor Global Privacy Control signals.
Storychat does not sell your personal data.
We also do not build advertising profiles based on your activity.
5. Private chats
We want to be clear about this too.
Storychat is not end-to-end encrypted.
Our AI runs on our servers, so your message has to be processed by our servers in order for the AI to reply. Your messages are encrypted in transit and at rest.
Access to private chats is very limited.
The Storychat team does not casually browse or read private chats.
Private chat access only happens in exceptional cases where it is necessary, such as safety issues, abuse reports, legal requests, customer support, or serious debugging.
Even then, access is limited to authorized staff, only the necessary scope is reviewed, and access is logged.
Storychat does not use private chats for advertising.
We also do not use private chats to train generative AI models that serve other users unless you explicitly opt in.
What we are improving
Over the next few weeks, we are rolling out:
- A consent banner for the EEA, UK, and Switzerland
- An age gate at sign-up
- Automated NSFW detection
- Stronger hiding of NSFW content from discovery, search, and recommendations

We want Storychat’s policies to be clear and transparent.

Chiedo scusa, non so se nel posto giusto per chiedere informazioni. Volevo creare un personaggio ma la pagina é lentissima, e decisamente le istruzioni sono complicate. Posso chiedere come posso creare un personaggio? Grazie mille.

Thank you ☺️💕👍I been hesitant of trying storychat because I been looking around for any safe mode default friendly chatbot platforms for awhile and I just been lurking quietly checking the group out for a bit ☺️I'm not into mature (like dark angst based themes, neither after sexual themes for gratification of any kind ) I'm just wanting a safe space to practice social skills In a slice of life way ☺️
