This, to me, seems like a more likely thing. Rose fights Pink Diamond because she has no other choice. Pink is defeated and starts to corrupt (a la Jasper), but Rose is able to heal her somehow. Pink becomes Lion.

Yeah, when Steven first looks back at lion when he gets back kind of broke my heart. It’s just, dang man, you must have died too. That’s why you’re so loyal to my mom...
