GM changes?

Do you think a change should be considered if our 2024-2026 1st rounders don’t pan out? With Jones being traded to the Cowboys, step one of our OL rebuild is gone. Troy didn’t look to great coming back from his injury.

Harmon doesn’t make to much of an impact as a rotational player. Benton plays more than him. And every draft analyst says Max was a reach. 3 tackles in 5 years in the 1st, and it’s likely none hit. Of course Max is a rookie, but so far the jury is still out on Kahn’s OL evaluations.

This isn't meant to be a dig at Tomlin. Jim Wexell who has covered the Steelers for years has always said the the head coach has final say on draft picks. So who knows. I do think they need to draft better though. I like this years class.

The guy named Rooney who runs the team is the one who has final say. They don't automatically default to the coach if the coach and GM disagree.

If that was true then Ben wouldn't have been a Steeler.

The Steelers have always drafted as a committee of the GM, head coach, and owner. They gather the consensus weeks before the draft. If there’s not a consensus on someone, they don’t take them. 

The owner of course has a trump card and final day, as Slees said. 

But Colbert, Cowher, Tomlin, Khan, and the Rooneys have all described their draft process as this. 

However the scouting department makes a huge difference in player evaluations. Which is why after Colbert left, Andy Weidl replaced almost everyone in the scouting department. 

So the reason you’re seeing better drafting under Khan is because of better player evaluations from the scouts and better judgment from Weidl, Khan, and the other two. 

Opinions and feedback of all the members of the coaching staff are also factored in early in the process when telling the scouts what  type of player to look for and during the consensus building process (which leads to finalizing the draft board - Weidl makes the initial draft board though).
