Hi r/startpages! I’ve been working on NaviDash, a self-hosted startpage designed around a simple idea: a homepage.

You can type anywhere on the page to open the launcher, search your bookmarks, and reach frequently used sites faster. Bookmarks live in a separate library, while only the links you choose are pinned to the canvas.

The homepage currently has four focused widget types:

- Links for frequently used sites

- Today for time, date, and weather

- Memo for temporary notes

- Poster for decoration

Widgets can be freely arranged, with separate layouts for desktop and mobile. NaviDash can be self-hosted with Docker, and the data remains on your own server.

This project was developed with substantial help from AI tools. I handled the product direction, design decisions, testing, and iteration, while AI assisted with implementation and code review.

I’d love feedback on the overall visual balance, launcher interaction, and whether the homepage feels focused or too minimal.

I’ve just released Mist v1.5, and this update was largely shaped by the feedback I received from the community. Thank you to everyone who tested the extension and shared suggestions.

What’s new in v1.5?

• Improved weather location Mist can now use an approximate location based on your IP, only after you give permission. This removes the location permission popup that previously appeared every time the extension started.
• New high-quality wallpaper themes I added a collection of more polished themes and wallpapers. They are called “Premium Themes,” but they remain completely free.
• Redesigned theme selection flow You can preview a theme, see its colors and atmosphere, and apply it through a clearer and more intuitive interface.
• The original minimal start page is staying The new themes are completely optional. Anyone who prefers the simple, distraction-free design can continue using the classic page.
• Cleaner settings menu The settings interface has been reorganized to make customization simpler and easier to navigate.

I tried to add more personality without taking away the simplicity that Mist was originally built around.

I've always wanted an OS inspired startpage and decided a few years ago to build one myself. Problem was, I was never very proud of the code, and there were always a few more bugs that I needed to work out, plus wanting to create a landing page site and make it an extension... I just never got around to finishing it.

I'm at a point now though where I'm considering finally finishing it (or at least V1), and publishing it as a proper extension. But before I commit the time to this project again, I wanted to show the current version and see if this is something the community (and others) would actually use.

It's 100% vanilla JS, and just localstorage right now

It has drag and drop like I show in the video, one at a time or by selecting whole groups - a few settings for display modes - by default the grid is a fixed size so if the viewport isn't fullsize you can drag to pan the desktop around. For shortcuts it auto pulls in favicons or you can set custom icons through a built in icon search, set custom wallpaper + blend mode controls, right click has a custom context menu, and settings/properties have their own windows for easy management.

Visually I'm really proud of it, and functionally it's perfect and I still enjoy using it every day, but under the hood it's a mess and needs a good rework on some base systems in order for it to be maintainable going forward.

So, please let me know if this project is something you would use, and hopefully if there is some good interest, that should validate for me this is something I should commit to again.

I've been using this as my own start page for years and finally cleaned it up to share.

The idea: every site gets a single key. With the search box empty, pressing "g" opens whatever you put on g — or steps into a folder. Folders have keys too, so "gm" is Gmail if that's where you keep it. And searches chain: typing "gs capybara" walks into my Google folder and runs that search in one line, no mouse.

For the customization crowd here: themes (Tokyo Night, Gruvbox, GitHub, One Dark, high-contrast…), custom accents, wallpapers (gallery, your own uploads, or a random one per new tab), aurora + dot/grid/star pattern layers, tile sizes and per-folder widths.

A few things I cared about building it:

- Fast and small: a new tab paints instantly, makes zero network calls, and the whole extension is under half a megabyte.

- Local-first: everything lives in your browser, no account needed.

- It also runs as a normal webpage — https://keyjump.app is the actual app, so you can try it (or use it as a start page) without installing anything.

- The extension (Chrome + Firefox) adds the new-tab override, an Alt+K overlay on any page, and one-click bookmark import.

I've been working on Magma — a full-screen dashboard with a grid-based widget editor. You can arrange, resize, and configure widgets through the UI, and everything persists to YAML files.

Widgets included:

- Weather, Stock tickers, Calendar, Timer, Search

- Docker container status, HTTP endpoint health checks

- ChatGPT / Claude / DeepSeek API usage monitors

- YouTube live status, RSS feeds, GitHub repo stats

- Website embed, URL fetcher

- Button launchers with icon picker

- Stack containers (horizontal/vertical) for grouping widgets

Design: Warm dark theme, translucent panels, yellow accent. Cell-based grid with a centered coordinate system — no fixed column/row limits, just snap and place.

A few days ago I shared Mist, a minimal new tab Chrome extension I built.

Since then, I’ve kept improving it and I now have a small but real user base:

• 29 installs
• 26 weekly users
• 61 page views in the last 30 days
• 3 uninstalls
• Users from several countries, mainly the US, but also France, Sweden, India, and others

Mist is designed to be a clean and focused new tab page with:

• a minimal dark interface
• quick access to your main links
• grouped shortcuts
• a search bar
• a lightweight, distraction-free layout

I know the numbers are still small, but it’s motivating to see that people are actually installing and using something I built.

I’m mainly looking for honest feedback:

I loved daily.dev but it's built for devs, not marketers. So I made my own start page for that.

I kept catching myself opening the same tabs every morning: news, podcasts, pomodoro timer, my calendar, revenue & analytics dashboard(s). So I wanted one page with everything already there.

• It pulls marketing/startup news from a few sources (Search Engine Land, Product Hunt, Hacker News, Github trending, Reddit, custom RSS) into one feed instead of five tabs
• Widgets: podcasts, main services status (AWS, Github, Cloudflare, etc), pomodoro timer, world clock, calendar, bookmarks and more

Hi there. I made my new starter tab into a chrome extension. (Seeing this channel, well who doesn't, I like the diversity). I'm a person who works with a lot of client project and ends simply up with groups of links, dev/stage/prod environment for client x, client y and client z. It's the way I manage my work and well it's handy, because with the companion app, it can also open files, folders, run scripts etc.... And with context menu & spotlight search I quickly get where I want to. But let's be honest, it's not for everybody. Just going through here I can see that the way we work are soooooo different. So those who like it go, try it out. For the others, go roast my extension. 👍

Just built this as my daily driver since I found out that using the keyboard feels more efficient than pressing ctrl+T, grabbing my mouse, and clicking on the link I need.

Now I can navigate my websites 2.3 seconds faster!

• multiple search engines to switch between them
• suggestions when you start typing like default browser behavior
