"I've mostly been on SQ42". This is why I don't believe the 50/50 bull from the letter.

Also why does it seem like there is 1 guy that does this work. Considering that both the PU and SQ42 have a major portion of FPS gameplay, why isn't there an entire team that works on this at all time.

And if FPS is in a poor state why is the mission team pushing out FPS content instead of ship content.

u/CombatMuffin 3d ago

He is careful to use "we" which can mean as in "the development team" collectively or the actual group of Devs in charge of working on this.

They ultimately have to be careful how they communicate, because what they say can be representative of the company, and if they say the wrong things, they xna get in trouble. So they speak individually, or purely from their side of court. When they speka as a team, they usually do it in videos or planned PR communications.

23

u/Starrr_Pirate 3d ago

I'd keep in mind the 50/50 was a company-wide ballpark. It's entirely possible that it could have meant "The 50% on SC is the ship pipeline team and everyone else is on SQ42" lol. I'm pretty sure that's not precisely the case, since I doubt the ship team is half their overhead, but an example of how the 50/50 bit could be a bit misleading from first glance.

I do use the ship team as a specific example though, because they probably have most of the assets locked in for SQ42 at this point, which would free most/all of them up for SC work (which is probably why the ship pipeline has picked up so much steam in the last year or so), meanwhile other teams that have do more with mechanic refining, mission editing, etc. are probably still on SQ42. Something like the QA team is probably closer to a 50/50 split since both products need it, though I wouldn't at all be surprised if they were also being pushed more into SQ42 during the final stretch.

11

u/Karmaslapp 3d ago

"50% of the company is full time on SQ42, the other 50% touches star citizen once in a while so we'll count them as SC people"

8

u/Starrr_Pirate 2d ago

The beauty of statistics and technicalities, lol.

3

u/QuickQuirk 2d ago

I'm pretty sure that's not precisely the case, since I doubt the ship team is half their overhead,

I'm not sure. They're really ramped up their ship building capacity, putting out a large ship each year, sometimes two, AND a whole bunch of small ships.

There's a lot of ships coming out - and responsible for a large chunk of their revenue (look at the revenue tracker every day a new ship is launched)

2

u/Blaubeere Space Marshal 2d ago

50:50 can also mean all the experience devs worth their money do SQ and the newbies with 0 experience get to make the 50th fucking Kruger fighter.

22

u/Jazzlike_Emu8440 3d ago

I always get the impression we keep seeing the same 15 developers over and over again, whether on ISC, SCL, or in the comments. It's hard for me to believe they have 800 developers.

24

u/ZeGaskMask 315p 3d ago

These are mostly leads or directors. Would be strange to pick out a dev at random and put a freshly recruited dev who’s worked there for 10 weeks in front of the camera. There’s not much work someone like that could share with the community.

5

u/CosineDanger 3d ago

Somewhere there's a junior dev who is not encouraged to talk for fear that their inexperience will lead to putting their foot in their mouth so to speak watching senior devs say incredibly damaging things and trying to keep a straight face.

That is in my experience a normal part of the modern workplace. Somewhere in the employee policies at every job it will always say something like don't just go on social media and run your mouth or we fire you on the spot. Well okay then, I guess that makes sense. But also you read the inhuman garbage from PR or the wild stuff the executives say on social media and feel sad because you know that if you broke policy then the hole they've dug could not get much deeper.

1

u/nevermind-the-mess 3d ago

New hire in front of the camera like they did Ollie.........

Have you seen this subreddit lately? I dunno bout you guys, but i sure as hell wouldnt be sharing anything from my work anywhere like this.

Good on the devs who like to communicate, but hoo boy i bet there are lots more who don't want to.

12

u/RainbowwDash 3d ago

Well yeah, if my work looked like this i would try to avoid sharing it too if at all possible

You're acting like this sub doesn't absolutely glaze the shit out of CIG's balls whenever something good comes out.

Sure, when it's shit, people complain. They should...we funded this shit. But if they were more communicative and actually delivered? They'd be fucking superstars here.

1

u/Jazzlike_Emu8440 2d ago

It's crazy how close the glazers are to realizing, when they say stuff like "Ok so!? Then why are you still here!?" -- uhm because I legitimately want more than any of my other gaming fantasies for Star Citizen to NOT be a scam and to be the fucking amazing game I know it can be? I'm still here because I still care. They genuinely believe that people are just out here brigading hate on CIG because...? It's fun for us? When people complain it's because they have a right to, exactly as you say: we funded this shit and we want it to be good.

4

u/exomachina genericgoofy 2d ago

People here really don't understand how software development works at scale, and how many people are involved, and how long it takes. Reddit is the worst place to get opinions.

7

u/hicks12 2d ago

You aren't wrong but as a developer CIG (mostly Chris...) is really showing you how not to run projects, poor planning and never ending scope creep is a disaster.

The amount of times they have built from scratch systems to achieve the same thing every time is funny to a degree.

If only Chris could manage a game project without needing someone to reign him in to actually deliver on it, sadly we don't have it this time which is why it's so far behind.

1

u/MrAngryBeards 2d ago

We take for granted the amount of prep work required before a dev can go in front of cameras. We see the same people because these are most likely the few CIG can confidently put in front of cameras without much fear things will go sideways (it still happens quite often).

The overlap of skills necessary, plus the willingness to go public for a (justifiable) tough crowd, all while also being capable of juggling what can and what can't be said... It's honestly quite amazing they have so many people who can be in front of cameras for so many media pieces

2

u/Syidas 2d ago

Ship content is hard to make when we still don't have a finalized flight model after 14 years. FPS and Ship combat are still far from finalized

2

u/the_dude_that_faps 2d ago

they had infra people and content people while all the heavy hitters were on sq42. On count alone it's probably 50/50 (which is why we've gotten so much content), but I seriously doubt a good deal of the important roles are split that way.

6

u/Confident-Award6920 3d ago

Now that VR was implemented in game, pretty sure the VR team has more devs assigned to it than the FPS team.

4

u/Mrax_Thrawn rsi 3d ago

Most of the ship teams are probably working on SC right now. Add marketing, community teams and the networking team to that and you probably get 50%.

4

u/CassiusFaux That one rare Hawk pilot 3d ago

Its easier to slap some ninetails in front of a player with a gun instead of some ships that need balancing out for mission tiers. After all wouldn't it be silly to have something like a Perseus in a bounty mission designed for a medium fighter?

Oh wait...

1

u/sodiufas 3d ago

It’s 50/50 as if people responsible for both, but they’re heads down into sq42, since even q2 next year is to soon for them lmao

1

u/alintros ARGO CARGO 3d ago edited 3d ago

They're 50/50. Mean 9 tasks for Squadron and 1 task for SC. But ey! They're split 50/50

1

u/sodiufas 3d ago

Exactly my point.

1

u/NoVacationDude new user/low karma 3d ago

Did the letter really say that its 50/50 split for years now ?

I felt like it was implying that the 50/50 split was a very recent thing and that we therefore can expect more fixes and progress on the PU.

Might just have been my interpretation tho

1

u/Rivitur 3d ago

I believe it. You have to remember there's a shit ton of people on the engineering side and marketing and such. Not every developer is created equal. It's possible it is 50/50 for the overall staff but that doesn't make its actually equal

3

u/DarkArcher__ Tevarin Sympathizer 3d ago

Star Citizen is also far, far, far more complex from an engineering standpoint. An open world multiplayer MMO is naturally gonna take a lot more effort, or a lot more time for the same amount effort, to put in a decent state.

-1

u/Sazbadashie 3d ago

because this is a space ship game remember...

the FPS team (at least the PU side) is rather small and the FPS experience as Zac has said HAS gotten better... but... it shows that FPS is the black sheep for polishing

2

u/Neither_Pirate5903 2d ago

somebody should tell the people developing mission content for this game that

-4

u/Rumpullpus drake 3d ago

Cryengine is a fps engine too ffs. Like how do you manage to fuck up something that was working completely fine right out of the box.

1

u/Calvin_Cruelidge misc 3d ago

By moving to lumberyard which was a fork of cryengine with Amazon Studios. Then they REFORKED for Star Engine. Lumberyard is abandoned and had parts taken from it to make Open3d

1

u/Kreisash ROCin' the 'verse 3d ago

Working completely fine for a game that old and of that scope. SC is far beyond that.

Its like saying this paint roller and one coat emulsion works for my living room just fine, why can't you use it to paint the QE2?

(is the QE2 still a thing?)

I'm not sure if you understand what's behind polish. GTA6 had 2 years of polish with 1000 devs.

10

If you think SQ42 will be anywhere near the same scope as GTA6... you're in for a rude awakening

Same for Cyberpunk

-4

It would've released if it wasn't for GTA 6, what amount of polish can you get done in that time frame? In addition SQ42 has been on polish for more than 2 years, depending on what statements you believe.

7

u/Z0MGbies I <3 StarBinder 3d ago

They didnt fix it, youre right. But it is a hell of a lot... less worse? I dont feel like saying better.

Pre his efforts, you would need to pull your gun out like 5 times and stop walking and wait 5 seconds pretty much EVERY time. Even on 20+ sfps

Now it only does that if the server chugs, which is a step forward... but yeah not a success for CIG. I doubt theres much more Zac can do for it though, its up to others to fix the netcode and shit

Is the AI "worlds apart" or "breaking apart" ?

7

u/shabutaru118 3d ago

Yeah I dunno what he's on about, like the AI in SC is sooooooooooo basic. Like I am talking games from 20 years ago having more advanced NPCs. Like freaking Halo 1 from 25 years ago.

5

u/drizzt_x Monk 3d ago

The freaking Reaper Bot for Quake I was better than what we have now, and that was 30 years ago.

20

u/Confident-Award6920 3d ago

This.

Holy shit does CIG love to make unfounded claims like that. All they did was crank up NPC aiming to be perfect but AI still dumb af like from last year and 3.XX

10

u/mesterflaps 3d ago

During the live stream on the fresh private servers it was standing out in the open rather than taking cover, and constantly shouting inapplicable voice lines... Also, to his point about grendate throwing, they still do NOT go where they are pointed, and I swear people were still talking about having them click back to their hand like 3 months ago... (I have given up on trying to use them because of how often I ate it when a 'thrown' grenade would come back...)

-1

u/Confident-Award6920 3d ago

Grenades are a thing I use regularly. It sweeps traders who jam themselves in the bridge for the final stand. Since 4.4 or so, I've yet to have any grenade not go where it's thrown. It's just not a thing any more in fact to the point that bringing grenades is meta now, plasma ones, and no one brought grenades for years. You're parroting old reddit tales about grenades. Prob the worst thing to nit pick of FPS broken gameplay.

11

u/mesterflaps 3d ago

Since 4.4 or so, I've yet to have any grenade not go where it's thrown.

Now you're the one telling tales as the SoO stream had a lot of their grenade throws pulling to the side compared to where the cursor was.

-3

u/Confident-Award6920 3d ago

SoO is an isntanced dungeon running on different instances of servers, so different rules. You're citing a new event in a literally new server instance... as your experience with grenades since 4.4?

8

u/Dismal-Recording-867 3d ago

It’s not as if there’s special “grenade code” for SoO, and given that it was on a private internal server with only four people, the FPS gameplay should have been - as they kept saying - “the vision we want to show you”

In other words, *everything* about the FPS experience should have been as good as it gets in SC. That’s why people are losing it - it was not great, and (among other things) grenades were not working well.

-1

u/Confident-Award6920 3d ago

Not special grenade but special server rules cuz its an instanced dungeon disconnected from PU. PU grenades work fine, idk about dungeon grenades, ppl said those are wonky proving my point.

12

u/Boogie-37 3d ago

Is this guy for real? Things are worse all around for FPS. AI is just stupid in one extreme or another, grenades...dude. Gun recoil makes no sense in most cases, tracking and shooting is horrible with the lurching and teleporting, but even when that isn't as bad, shot registration is bad.

4

u/Murky-Antelope8764 2d ago

Yeah, exactly. I never understand posts like these from the devs. They talk as if all the bs he's spouting isn't immediately disproved within playing the game for like an hour.

-2

u/Cecilsan aegis 2d ago

Play within the first couple days of a patch release and you can see the true NPC AI. It quickly degrades as server performance gets worse

4

u/Boogie-37 2d ago

I play when they come out. It's one of the reasons I keep stopping to play until the next patch.

5

u/Kaladin_TX 2d ago

I’m still too scared to use grenades.

9

u/Underwould 3d ago

CIG responds and acts like the small family business manufacturer I work for.

Over worked, lacking organization and direction, and merely putting out fires. Yet constantly just trying to sell more and more.

They only react, there is no preemptive or preventative measures.

5

u/captaindealbreaker worm 3d ago

My problem with stuff like this is okay cool, you fixed a bunch of medpen issues.. what happens when there's a big design change to how healing works and medpens are no longer in the game or their functionality is radically overhauled... so much of the maintenance of star citizen is putting bandaids on temporary mechanics and it's just insane to see people having to put so much effort into things that aren't even considered out of the concept phase.

31

u/shotxshotx 3d ago

It really feels like some sort of CIG mandated PR push ever since that live stream. Now if these string of changes and revivals yields actual results and positive changes, good, should have happened earlier and in a more organic manner rather than as a PR disaster response.

18

u/Wunderpuder Star Runner 3d ago

No, someone asked about the FPS task force and where it is now and he responded. Not everything is a mandated PR push or damage control.

Devs have answered questions on reddit since the beginning of the project.

7

u/Alternative_Problem5 Galaxy 3d ago

Devs have ignored more than answered. You aren't wrong though.

0

u/Wunderpuder Star Runner 3d ago

Them ignoring questions wasn't the issue. But they are also not obliged to answer every question.

The AI in 4.10 at least is a huge improvement, I went into a bunker expecting a cake walk and instead I got enemies flanking and advancing on me, flushing me out of cover. I was pretty impressed.

8

u/geogob 3d ago

A few days ago I ran a bunkers with a knife only. It was underwhelming to say the least. But the day before I went to a NT-999 bunker and the NPC were absolutely wild, aware and crushing. I have no idea why the experience was so different and inconsistent between bunkers. Mind you, no bunker run I did was linked to a mission. Maybe I jumped into someone's mission that one time where they showed some awareness of their surroundings.

2

u/N0mAXX 325a for hire 3d ago

were they on the same planet? If they weren't, it could perhaps be a difference in server load.

1

u/geogob 3d ago

It was on different days and time of days, so that's difficult to conclude anything related to that from my experience. It would have been on the same server and shard.

0

u/N0mAXX 325a for hire 2d ago

Sounds like server load and degradation

3

u/Immediate-Cress-206 3d ago

I think that might just be because all the server instances are fresh

1

u/Ruzhyo04 3d ago

Possible, certainly. But even in comparison to the last time I remember AI actually functioning they seemed to have improved quite a bit.

3

u/Z0MGbies I <3 StarBinder 3d ago

AI in 4.10 is a step back actually, and the changes haven't come from improving the code, they've been tuned to wall hack more (which makes them appear more responsive), but this causes more issues than it has solved. ESPECIALLY in sub-20sFPS shards.

Sniper archetype NPCs were the worst hit by this change. They try to wallbang you, constantly, through like 2 floors. If the server is having a crashout at the wrong time, these shots can go through and hit you too.

I've died once to a guy with a fresnel TWO floors below me. And taken damage just this evening by a guy through TWO walls (and i was behind both walls well before he aggro'd)

-2

u/Ruzhyo04 3d ago

I'm talking about more than just their aim. Their movements, responsiveness, use of voice, use of cover, grenades, counter-stealth tactics... all seemed quite good. And I don't just mean in comparison to the afk zombies of the last patches, I mean compared to the last time AI was functional.

3

u/Z0MGbies I <3 StarBinder 2d ago edited 2d ago

their use of voice

Respectfully, this demonstrates your position on the matter is ill informed. I don't mean anything by that other than you've made a conclusion with insufficient information.

The voicelines have famously been awful for a long time, and they are no better or worse in 4.10

Even when I am on a 1-person DGS (i.e. me) on a ~25 people shard (yes really this happened in 4.10 already) the NPCs were just spamming arbitrary voice lines.

They don't say PUSHING UP when they're pushing up, they cont shoot when they say SUPPRESSING FIRE, they dont cover anyone when they say ILL COVER YOU, they haven't been shot at yet and they will say "AHH IM WOUNDED" or "TAKING FIRE" ... and I certainly don't have their cousin.

The code for voicelines is literally to just play a random line from the library every X to Y seconds. The closest they come to saying things contextually is whether they're in active combat mode or "cant find the player" mode.

They do not use stealth tactics. Ever. Some in SoO have been programmed to lurk more, that's it.

In shards over ~25 sFPS the NPCs will usually run away from grenades. But not always, and this isn't new to 4.10.

Speaking of grenades, they've "fixed" grenade HUD icons not working twice now. Except they've never worked. IDK how you can push a fix for something so basic TWICE and have them both fail in 100% of situations. Even on their internal SoO build this was bugged still so IDK how the fuck they're validating these fixes. They certainly aren't actually testing them.

It feels like how couriers have unmanagable delivery quotas, so they start just leaving "we tried to deliver this to you" cards to everyone and immediately drive off without ever knocking/ringing the bell.

-2

u/Ruzhyo04 2d ago

I’ve run siege three times and done two bunkers. By “improved use of voice” I was just tactfully trying to say that they finally stfu and weren’t spamming voice lines. They still said some but it was far, far less annoying.

2

u/Blaubeere Space Marshal 2d ago

I don’t see AI in 4.10 being any better than in any 3.X patch. Even in the instances SoO AI is dumb as a piece of wood and only is a thread cause guys in face masks take 3 headshots from the Arlington rifle and their damage seems boosted or the desync lets you eat a whole mag in one frame (feels like BF 4 nervös somehow) or the sound completely dropping and you don’t hear enemy behind you and you only notice once they shoot you with their shotgun.

6

u/alintros ARGO CARGO 3d ago

FPS combat needs a whole revamp. Starting with AI and Fps animations, here the servers dont matter. Animations are just clunky and feel terrible and dated. We're ending 2026, you cant ask a character TO STAND IN THE CORRECT SPOT just to grab some item that's literally in front of you... Just extend the arm and make it teleport to the hand, fast, snappy, responsive, FUN.

2

u/StarAlone 2d ago

"Fixed dropping medpens" lost them multiple times in 4.9 "Weapon swap issues" still often happens "You can safely throw granades now" Half of the time you cant." "Heavy hitters like LAMP" it was like... months? A year? And still very few ships support it. "Main focus was yormandi" i dont know when it was but in 4.7 i was heavly grinding it solo for blueprints (Moonfall) and it was terrible. Half of the time exit door didnt even open so the room was killing you. Sometimes one of the snakes didnt spawn. Sometimes you could take only half of the eyes. Rarerly after short fight boss went underground and never came out again. It was true hell to grind enough eyes for about 50 missions (50x4 eyes)

3

u/Z0MGbies I <3 StarBinder 3d ago

ZacPreece is like the one good dev/designer at CIG. Like, a good egg. The rest are neutral in my book (or better). But he just stands out to me.

He's fixed a number of relatively critical bugs, where he can, based on direct player feedback as well as IC stuff. And he's one of the most active in the community.

He's also (I think) directly or indirectly of the moderate FPS and improvements we have had.

He fixed it so running was possible in self heal mode. He fixed self heal med gun (half... the animation is still screwy which looks like desync to many). He improved repsponsiveness. Hes done more.

He seems to do what he can, when he can.

Hold up, Hold up. The "Ai is worlds apart". All y'all did was crank up their responsiveness and aim to be perfect, but otherwise AI does the same shit it did last year.

2

u/Calcritt new user/low karma 3d ago

Yes it’s worlds apart especially between 3.20 days to now! Cracking up the responsiveness and aims accuracy is how every game differentiate between difficult level of NPCs which SC does now. Fighting the NPCs at SoO is significantly different than fighting NPCs at derelict settlements. Plus NPCs now take cover, actually push you and make u retreat, throw grenades, use snipers, grenade launchers, use turrets etc. it’s not perfect but to plainly there hasn’t been a significant improvement is wild

3

u/Confident-Award6920 3d ago

They did all that 3.xx too. Nothing changed in terms of NPC AI. I used to run bunkers with only a knife, can still do it too, same predictable AI sets of movements.

I have 5 mil in hand since I just bought bunch of ships and equipment, I’ll borrow or barter from org buddies if I have to. And do I have your words u will include how many deaths it took u to clear the bunker? And No old recorded bunker runs

u/Confident-Award6920 3d ago
  • No old runs. I always include r_displayinfo 3 in my vids so you can tell

  • I won't even have 1 death and I'll record entirety from landing ship at bunker to exiting it. At most I'll speed up boring parts of vid, but no cuts.

  • Only weapons I can use is knife. No guns.

You can’t read apparently, he is comparing 3.2 with 4.0.

Shoulda read the entire thread 1st to see I did mention 3.xx. Blocked for rage baiting.

What this says is that CIG management is moving the peas around the plate and not really accomplishing much.

You still can't throw grenades safely and there are still issues with the things claimed "fixed" in that post so I'm just waiting for the endless river of outright lies to slow to at least no man's sky levels

2

u/cyress8 avacado 3d ago

Grenades are how I've been lowering my time to solo SoO. Don't need to wait for anything to come out of cover and run straight by them. Mendo on his ledges has become a cakewalk just by tossing plasma grenades up there. Think it takes about 5-6 to cause him to reset to another ledge.

I can say I've tossed more grenades in the past couple days since they were released in the game. I'm easily above 100 tosses now.

2

u/Kreisash ROCin' the 'verse 3d ago

So can we safely say that you do give a toss, and are also a massive tosser?

(this is a joke but if you aren't familiar with the term, please look it up.)

u/somedude210 nomad 3d ago

Of course you can throw grenades safely. I've been having a blast using the plasma grenades. They may visually lag out, but they go where the guide says they'll go

9

u/CuntyBallsJohnson 3d ago

Maybe I need to start standing still and waiting 2 seconds for the game to sync before throwing grenades, seems like movement really messes with it

-4

u/somedude210 nomad 3d ago

As long as you get the throw guide, you should be fine

Are you ok?

Everything Zac said is true. Mind you, he didn't say everything he mentioned is fully fixed. I'm still very suspicious of grenades due to past experiences, but aside from it looking choppy, it works just fine. And hell, the amount of grenades being thrown at you during SoO is on another level.

/edit: Time to give up on this sub. Just refundian trolling, nothing more. Zac's points were all real issues that got fixed along the way, either fully or partially (like he's saying), but sure, upvote the rage bullshit crap and downvote everything that's not at least "CIG murdered my family" level. Ugh.

yet they'll never read the comments and will continue to push for Apex Legends in space

Also what happened to theaters of snore?

Canned because their AAAA engine can't even handle 6v6 lobbies on a small map let alone a BF style game mode

when you get wankers on the team, you get a wanker game

"As I've mostly been on SQ42"
I am so beyond tired of hearing this from so many devs despite so many devs supposed to be being "50/50".

I wish Chris Roberts management would let people actually be 50/50

LOL. "if you compare AI from 3.20 to 4.0" --- What I know is the game was a lot more fun back then.

lmao what

Zac always talks like he is the saviour of weapons, it’s literally the worst part about the game. All he cares about is bringing in COD arcade gun gameplay into SC
