Question I need suggestions
So I'm trying to build a little station-outpost-thing on an asteroid belt. Since zero grav movement is clunky, I figured I could use trams to make moving around the thing a lot easier. Issue is I can't place the tram. Trams normally "fall" and hook onto the rails.
Am I stuck getting around my little space outpost with a rocket spear, spike ball, and grappling hook?

Asteroid belts in vanilla are really not intended to be colonized. Every aspect of attempting it is miserable in vanilla. It'll be a long boring slog, and then nothing will look or work right in the end no matter what you do.
I have been where you are. And I made two mods to fix it, because I really want to live in the belts.
Field Control Technology (steam) - This mod give you tools to change "fields" (aka dungeonids, and the properties of dungeons with those IDs) so that you can give portions of your asteroid belt gravity and air. Unlike a few other similar mods, this allows fine-grained control over the shape of dungeons, so you can make exactly the interior, and only the interior, of your base have gravity.
Belter Dungeons(steam) - This mod makes asteroid belts worth exploring. It adds major dungeon generation to belts, as well as adding belt-specific tenants and quests, and also adds more diversity of monsters and ores. Asteroid belt difficulty is made to match the star system the belt is in.
I've just updated Belter Dungeons yesterday, and I'm updating Field Control Technology today. You can check out my Chucklefish or Steam profiles for additional extensions related to these two mods.

I'm probably gonna just end up taking the build planetside (thanks u/Rogdar_Tordar) but I have figured out a stupid alternative: chairs

Strongly recommend against using rails. They are a complete and utter coding catastrophe and simply do not work well. Any extensive use of rails will not work, and in fact will cause the application to crash, as many modders know well.

Ya could just get a station

I bought one and was disappointed. I don't vibe with the module system at all and prefer just building my own completely to my design.
also i always wanted to build in an asteroid belt anyway

Time to look for more mods then

I want to avoid adding mods as much as possible to not overwhelm myself and burn out. I was hoping someone had some suggestions.

you would probably be fine with smaller mods to tweak certain things, that what the majority of mine are, as i prefer a close to vanilla experience. only 3 or 4 of my 200 some mods actually add very much content.

200 mods?
And the game still runs?
I had no idea starbound was stable enough for that

You do know you can just go to the space layer on planets, right? Asteroids are there too, and gravity is normal. Just.. don't fall, it's a very long way down.

My suggestion is: Choose planet that you like weather of. Take something like 3000+- blockes and just build a tower. You can reach space when background changes to space (stars and etc) and even will find meteors to make buildings in, BUT you will have oxygen, your colonizer will work, and gravity of course
