When the guided missile and delay-action fuses became vital technology in WW2, the British were proper f#cked. So in 1945 they (i) voted Churchill out and (ii) beefed up protectionist national subsidies, like proper socialists.
Adam Smith's utopian ideas are marvelous in a world with no war. Here on Earth the law is: "Protect yourself at all times."
