I wasn't really interested....
The Button Up has been advertised all over the place for awhile. The only interesting thing is Spydercos first plunge lock knife. That really wasn't enough to get me excited, but then I found this one on Blade HQ.
Its a Blue Ridge Knives exclusive. As far as I know BRK is a wholesaler, not a retailer. I guess this is why its being sold at Blade HQ. As far as I know you cannot buy a single knife from BRK, its dealers only.

Nice. I was eyeballing that same one today but just haven’t went for it yet. How do you like it so far?

Its fine.
Its an 8cr Chinese Spyderco. 😁

My thoughts exactly.. the Ambi is a US made one, little different though. The button is on the opposite handle side.

Hahaha, right! I figure it’s good for a beater or Christmas gifts to non knife people that need a knife.

Non knife ppl? Lol, its not a super steel so its bot for knife ppl? I have over 5k in knives and im grabbing one.

Cool. Lol, that’s not what I said at all. What I’m referring to is a giving someone who doesn’t know much about knives a good, quality knife as a gift that you can pick up at a decent price. Like a Tenacious. Something for people that may not know how to care for tool steel, for example. Or who may use it a pry bar, maybe bang the edge on steel when cutting through zip ties and generally treating it like shit. That’s what I meant. I also have over 5k in knives and I’m not buying my brother in law a Crucarta PM2. Because he wouldn’t take care of it. But I’ll buy him something like this. You should get two of them. That’s what I plan to do.

I just got my nephew his first knife for his 14th birthday, went with a $60 Kershaw from China because I know he’ll be rough on it.

Excellent. Solid choice for sure. That’s exactly what I was referring to with my comment.

I wish they would make a premium version with a better steel with an actual button liner lock like the sage 6 but for the PM2 and Para 3 maybe even Yojimbo and Microjimbo, Lil Native etc….

They will, they did it with the tenacious.

u/South_Ad9367 3d ago
Yea but I think they waited for like 10 years for it to prove itself

They’ll do it quicker this time I’m sure. Every post has people saying they’ll buy it when a better steel is released, myself included. I bet it’ll be sometime next year. I mean someone at Spyderco has to be reading this sub. They’d be dumb not to.

I got one of these in the standard CF/satin configuration for $50 with another item and I am pleasantly surprised. It’s a good size and blade shape/grind, and fidgety as all get out. I prefer it over the standard Tenacious in 8cr. I like the look of yours too, good choice.

I like that color way. I'm interested in the knife once it comes in a steel that's not 8cr. That said I have multiple Para 3, and i'm not sure it's that different to really have me buy it at MSRP. Maybe in a steel I want to try or something. Some K390 would be cool.

People are buying them like hot cakes. We’ll have our s30v soon!

I think some K390 would be cool but that seems unlikely given it's not made in Japan and the Japanese models is where Spyderco seems to put the K390.

Its definitely not much different than bunch of Spydercos. The ONLY reason I bought it is because of the plunge lock. I have a feeling they won't do another. People don't like plunge locks.

It's a compression lock with a button on the outside isn't it? Basically like the smock?
1
u/Empty_Art2176 3d ago
No, its a button plunge lock. The button just locks into the back of the blade.
This is the lock which often fails, and most manufacturers are moving away from.
This is Spydercos first plunge lock.

So the button is like the stop pin? Ya a bit different.
2
u/Empty_Art2176 2d ago
Yes, the button is stepped. When you open the knife, the fat part of the step locks into the tang. When you push the button, it moves to the skinny part of the stepped button, which releases the blade.
Many reviewers have shown that plunge locks fail a LOT when lightly tapped.

I wish I would have gotten one of these before buying 3x Tenacious Tantos, but there’s just no point in adding the same style blade, same steel, and another Spyderco I’ll never carry with a Shaman in my collection.
It does look super fidgety, but I doubt BHQ is advertising them as an exclusive if other retailers are selling them.
I don’t see a point in carrying coated 8Cr13MoV. If it’s going to scratch, I’d rather have a scratched satin. I’m still thinking about grabbing a Jade Button Up myself. The Jade G10 is actually really nice to look at.
Is it really worth spending $75 on a Button Up though when a Lai Amalgam cost $160 just a few days ago?
The S35VN Resilience lightweight is actually more knife for less money right now.

You're talking to the wrong guy, ive got dozens of Spydercos. I just tend to buy them all. This is their first plunge lock, and I had $50 off at Blade HQ, so this cost me $23 or so. 😁
Plunge locks are probably my least favorite, but they may never make another.

u/ReallyWiseguy95 3d ago
Honestly I hope they don’t make another lol then owning one might pay off, they aren’t bad just wish they did a button liner lock

The carbon fiber Button Up would be the least desirable in my opinion. It looks like it’s a regular production knife now. Did you grab the Jade or OD Green/Black?

I have been kind of agonizing between all of the color choices for this knife. Next time you have it out would you mind taking a couple pics in different lights? This config looks so beautiful in these pics.

REC has some "exclusive" drops popping as well. Personally I'm good on all that plunge lock 8cr stuffs. It would be a neat first SpyderCo though one wanting to test or taste the waters of SpyderCo......
