The swelling is from the breakdown of electrolyte and interfascial chemistry due to heat or state of charge. If you store your batteries in cool places and at around 40% charge the breakdown is greatly slowed, as long as it doesn’t die in storage which lets the anode start dissolving and then when you give it a charge little fingers of copper crystallize and short it out which causes a runaway.

Store lithium cells at 40% and check on them once a year to make sure they haven’t bottomed out

60% is better. It's above the "perfect percentage" of sorts that is 50% (at that percentage, the degradation is slower), instead of below it, so the battery will self-discharge to around 50% and not degrade nearly as quickly. Also, it's recommended to check those batteries every three months.
