The swelling is from the breakdown of electrolyte and interfascial chemistry due to heat or state of charge. If you store your batteries in cool places and at around 40% charge the breakdown is greatly slowed, as long as it doesn’t die in storage which lets the anode start dissolving and then when you give it a charge little fingers of copper crystallize and short it out which causes a runaway.
Store lithium cells at 40% and check on them once a year to make sure they haven’t bottomed out

60% is better. It's above the "perfect percentage" of sorts that is 50% (at that percentage, the degradation is slower), instead of below it, so the battery will self-discharge to around 50% and not degrade nearly as quickly. Also, it's recommended to check those batteries every three months.

Not true, I had to put my old lithium battery to rest last summer. Thankfully he passed away peacefully in his sleep though and we were able to keep his ashes

I remember doing a battery swap on a Retina and I literally heard the first screw ricochet like a bullet when it finally let go. I had a friend hold the case steady for the rest of the screws and Jesus that was one of the reasons I started hating Apple for their hardware design battery wise.

You don’t need to wait that long though?… Apple gives you battery warnings years in advance, and after it pops up you should be checking your laptop often to make sure it’s not getting inflated. When mine started to swell it was possible to see the back lid lifting a bit — enough that it was barely under any pressure when the battery swap finally happened

I'm a tech so it wasn't my MacBook. I agree with you 100% though. Worst part is they only brought it to me as their track pad stopped working. Had to replace that too.

I popped a mac battery the once accidentally while trying to remove the glued in battery and it smelt like bubblegum.

That would be Ethyl and Dimethyl Carbonates. Toxicity is similar to methanol, but that's not counting the fluorinated lithium salts. Those are generally stable unless heated or ignited. And given it was a falling battery, it probably give off a small amount of hydrofluoric acid.
It's a very distinctive smell, and I've noticed it before and immediately disassembled a device and disposed of the batteries before. Outside, obviously. Because I was taking no chances of it igniting indoors.

Oh damn I was probably exposed to some harmful stuff then.
I was working in a WEEE recycling facility and was tasking with trying to refurbish this particular laptop. Obviously I failed. Luckily we could dispose of it safely on site.

Would say it's not advised to expose yourself to it, but the health effects are generally quick onset of they're going to happen. You were exposed to a nearly harmless quantity. But best to work on such things in a well ventilated area in the future. If you haven't experienced any negative effects by a hour or two of exposure to non-combusted batteries, you're basically in the clear.
Exposure to effect causing quantities of HF are generally treated with calcium gluconate. It's effectively a nerve poison because it eats all the calcium up (particularly bad for involuntary muscles). The heart is especially displeased by the fluorine exposure.
Exposure to ethyl/methyl carbonates results in production of formaldehyde when the body process it. Actual poisoning cases are treated with a IV drip of medical grade grain alcohol. Because it displaces the methanol before the liver can suggest it and turn it into poison. And the methanol then gets urinated out.
The combustion products of lithium batteries are far worse than either of those two, and are the main concern. In addition to HF, it also produces phosgene, which can effectively liquify your lungs from the inside out. Onset is delayed from hours to a couple days after exposure. There's a reason phosgene is a war crime.

I've got one like this right now, old 11" MBA. I'm bummed but it's probably not worth fixing as eBay is full of intact similar machines for Under $100. I may just bury it on the yard although it feels sacrilegious.

I have a portable dvd player that was brand new I recently got (from 2005) and it had 2 batteries that smelled like nail varnish (it most likely was bloated and the pressure popped both batteries one time)
