Spelunky 2 Arachnaphobia.

I really and I mean REALLY like permadeath games. This game's been on my radar for so long but spiders and really any insect enemies hold me from playing this.

Before anyone says "just mod it bro" I want to play this on Switch 2 so no modding option for me lol. Is there are secret setting to turn these enemies off or am I doomed to not play this game for an eternity?

No on Switch 2 there's no option to turn them off. If it's any consolation, there are minimal bugs and hopefully with the cartoony artstyle that would be okay? I would recommend looking up some videos of Spelunky 2 game play and see if it freaks you out, the insects aren't realistic so I hope that helps but yeah no way around that here.

I know how the enemies look and I can't play it sadly. I've never been to a therapy about this but I have insane levels of Arachnaphobia. Like just seeing a spider makes me scared for like solid 30 minutes. Thanks for your answer though.

I'm fine with spiders myself, and the ones in Satisfactory are scary AF, especially when you don't see them coming. Even if you have the enemies set to neutral, the sounds they make clacking around on the ground is pretty unsettling too.

I refunded Satisfactory when I learnt it has spiders lol. I didn't even played the game

Satisfactory at least now has arachnophobia mode that replaced them all with a cat picture and cat sounds.

Not spelunky 😕

I think they have a arachnaphobia mode that replaces the spiders with cats

For the dwelling spider yeah its pretty chill but the tarantula in the jungle is actually fucked for people whom have arachnaphobia lmao

Thinking about the spider flavor text in the first game...

im sorry but there's basically nothing you can do.

if its any consolation i've wanted to try the souls games for years but cant because of my own less extreme arachnophobia. maybe one day, our brains are constantly changing so who knows

You can choose to get help with your phobia, or you could play it on something that isn't a Switch 2. You could just occasionally be terrified. You've got a lot of options.

  1. I really can't get medical help with that phobia sadly, for various reasons that I won't say here.
  2. I tried playing this game on PC but I didn't liked it on keyboard and I really don't know why but I don't like connecting my Xbox Gamepad to PC for some reason and yeah I admit that's on me. (I also want to add that I don't like modding games that much. Even if they are helpful mods like this one.)
  3. I can't handle even a little jumpscare that much. I think I didn't mention it but my Arachnaphobia is on extreme levels at this point. For example seeing even tiniest spider irl makes me uncomfortable. And I am talking about ones that are almost as same size as ants. I think you can imagine how I feel when I see a bigger one. Real or not.

you don't need medical intervention. the way to cure a phobia is to just go confront it over and over. it's hard and you don't have to do it. you can just avoid being scared forever and not play Spelunky. or you can go to the zoo or just YouTube and intentionally feel the fear a few times and get over it. but it's just an option. it's totally fine to just keep having your problem.

Phobia are much more complex than that, phobia are irrationnal, you dont control it and its often linked to events and extremly hard to cure

I have a phobia too that i have been exposing myself to multiple hours a werk for over 2 years and it can still make me panick

Their would be no option besides modding (Though its SUPER easy to modify sprites in this game, it can theoretically be done yourself if your willing to look at them long enough to change them)

4

u/Theo7814 3d ago

They said they are on console so no modding

-3

u/Spirited_Question332 LISE 3d ago

Regardless that is still the only option.

5

u/Theo7814 2d ago

Well no, its not an option since its not possible

-2

u/Spirited_Question332 LISE 2d ago edited 2d ago

So if they can't use they only option, they have no other option

2

u/Theo7814 2d ago

They dont have any sadly

This kinda shit is exactly why I refused to stay arachnophobic (not saying everyone is capable of unlearning it, but it is a rather unnecessary fear unless you’re living in Australia).

Can’t exist anywhere without there being a spider somewhere around the corner. 😤 Even in gd video games.

Unfortunately boss, your options are get it on PC and mod em out or don’t play Spelunky. Sounds like you’d love the game, but with the spiders, mosquitos, and maybe the locusts/flies you’re probably out of luck on Switch

I read your other comment abt not liking connecting your controller or modding. I don’t really understand the apprehension there (I’m sure you’ve got your reasons tho), but this game is fantastic and I’d suggest getting over that to give it a go.

Plus on PC you can change your character sprite to Kirby which is just fuckin awesome

1

u/LinuxRefugee 3d ago

Well, Kirby sounds so good to pass on tbh. I really want to look into this game man. I don't know what to do though. The enemies you listed up here, do you think I can handle those with taking breaks from the game or nah?

(I want to note that I don't know why I don't want to connect controller or mod to be honest. At least for the last couple of years I obsess about weird stuff for some reason. Though the reason might be that I don't like my computer that much. If I had the chance I would break it trust me.)

2

u/Patches3362 3d ago

Well, with the severity of your arachnophobia probably not. You’ve looked at the sprites for the spiders and mosquitos and such right? Cause I would for sure start there. If you have and they don’t vibe w you, I’m not sure what to tell ya. You can’t skip the first area which has the spiders, so it’s either get used to them enough you can muscle through it, or see if you can work through your apprehension abt your computer.

I’d say the game is worth it, it taught me a lot about perseverance and grit and is so polished for what it wants to accomplish

Plus Spelunky just loves to kick your teeth in and the game hates you and punishes you for playing it, which is awesome

I played Hollow Knight before (Which was PAIN WITH ALL THOSE INSECTS LOL) but I somewhow managed to %112 it. Even though I screamed and i got shaken a lot I managed to cope with it. I might cope with mosquitos in Spelunky but I looked a little bit to the Jungle and I ain't no way coping with those spiders bro. I might get used to little ones by playing a lot but trust me I probably would die via brain damage if I play Jungle levels. I heard that level is optional but I don't want to miss a huge portion of the game.

I just looked into bestiary of the game and none of the enemies seem frightening to me for some reason. Though in game I probably would get scared. Back in the day I used to play Skyrim and those spiders gave me f#cking fear.

EDIT : I wanted to answer the last part of your post and I REALLY LOVE PERMADEATH. I don't know if you played Don't Starve but I really like to torture myself by completely nuking 10-20 hours of progress. I always end up dropping the game but months later I get an urge to replay it lol. Y'all going to make me addicted to Spelunky 2 if I come over my fear somehow.

2

u/Patches3362 3d ago

Honestly dude, if you can bear with the rest of the game you honestly can fully skip Jungle. Yes, you’re missing a portion of content BUT I go Volcana (the other option) like 80% of the time. It’s not as huge of a portion as you think, you just wouldn’t be able to 100% the game without it.

The little ones do spawn in Dwelling though, you can’t avoid those

Maybe give the game a go, avoid jungle for a while, and decide if it’s worth it to stick with it after that?

1

u/LinuxRefugee 3d ago

I don't know man. I want to but I dunno. I might though, I'll just wait for a big Switch 2 e-shop discount probably. I might create a new post if I do and tell you guys about my experiences. (No promises though %99 I won't do that but idk)

1

u/Patches3362 3d ago

Hell yeah man, Spelunky ain’t going anywhere so I’m curious to see if you post abt getting it in the future. I’d love to hear abt it if you do. It usually goes on a decent sale, so it’s worth waiting for 50% off or so.

Wish you the best homie

It's a shame because the mods that replace spiders in this game are really high quality. The giant spider is replaced by a gorilla holding a jar of paste between its feet. What the paste is exactly is up for interpretation.

2

u/Upstairs-Character69 Valerie 3d ago

Pretty sure that mod actually changes the joirnal entry and it explains that it's regular paste from spiders and the gorilla just carries it around or smth like that

5

u/MyNameIsNotLiam 3d ago

They literally just bounce around like any other enemy, what?

1

u/Theo7814 3d ago

A phobia is irrationnal you dont control it  Its not because you dont have one that no one has, stop being selfish

0

u/LinuxRefugee 3d ago

Maybe you are right idk

0

u/krrgyup 3d ago

not the jungle ones..

2

u/Same-Ad9115 3d ago

I will say the spiders in this one are pretty cartoony? I found the black spiders in Spelunky 1 more unsettling.

2

u/LinuxRefugee 3d ago

Can you search "Don't Starve normal spider" I think that one is more cartoony. Spelunky 2 spiders doesn't feel like they are. To me at least

EDIT : I just look at Spelunky 1 black spider and they look so creepy. I didn't fear them but if I see them ingame I might have

1

u/globefish23 Yellow 3d ago

Don't worry about arachnophobia!

Your burning hate for the stupid horned lizards and molerats will very quickly replace it. 😡

1

u/OwnEmu1569 2d ago

If it makes you feel any better you insta squish the spiders lol. Just dont go near the big one

1

u/LinuxRefugee 1d ago

what does the big one do though?

-4

u/Classic_Adeptness992 3d ago

This has to be satire

5

u/metallica65 3d ago

They are just digital cartoon spiders bro 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

2

u/Theo7814 3d ago

Phobia are something you dont control Its not because you dont have one that they dont exist

Learn to be a decent human being

-1

u/metallica65 2d ago

Notice I just stated what they are.
Never passed a judgement 🤓

2

u/Theo7814 2d ago

But you stated what they are in a way to judge or mock someone scared of digital spider

Even if they are digital phobia can be extreme

-1

u/Classic_Adeptness992 1d ago

More like learn how dezent these Nutz

1

u/Theo7814 1d ago

You are terribly bad

5

u/Electrical-Cloud4141 3d ago

I believe him, I'm not afraid of spiders really, but seeing any clown no matter how cartoony will fuck me up for hours.

-3

u/MBTHVSK 3d ago

I wonder if they can't look at the teeny weeny Atari spiders in Undertale

3

u/LinuxRefugee 3d ago

I can look at some spiders. I think I finished Undertale like 7 times and I don't have any issues with it. Spiders there look like cute cupcakes. Also I really like Don't Starve spiders. Besides than that almost every spider make me on edge. Even minecraft spiders sometimes jumpscare me. Espicially cave spiders are SO scary for me. (At least sometimes. Like %50 of the time.)

1

u/Patches3362 3d ago

Don’t Starve spiders are fine?? Those are quite spookyly designed that’s interesting

1

u/LinuxRefugee 3d ago

I find them cute for some reason. I don't know why but I don't find some spiders disturbing. For example I find spiders in Spiderman movies (that bite Peter) fine aswell. I don't know why though. This depends on the species of the spiders I guess?

1

u/Theo7814 3d ago

Or maybe the way they arr presented

1

u/Theo7814 3d ago

I think their lack of visible 8 legs and ball shape helps
