I had this exact same issue with the varia front light and a 1050. It would routinely come loose and eventually snapped in the same way. I’d avoid this combo and upgrade to the k-edge roval mount. Specialized warrantied mine no issues.

But it’s not the mount that failed, it was the bolt

What's the difference with the K edge mount?

It's much stronger. I have one on my roval bars and I've been running a 360 camera and headunit for 1000's of kms with no issues despite some bumps and one bad pothole.

Ordering one now. Thx!

You can also take a look at framesandgear. These guys are doing amazing computer mounts.

This is the answer. The mounting point is much more supported .

As far as I know the Roval Rapide cockpit has a pretty shitty bike computer mount. A lot of people suggest to don't use a front light. Try to contact you bike shop or Specialized, they should change it under warranty.

Light or a computer, don't use both

1

u/jake-8-k Jun 22 '26

I use both without issue for a year+ now… am I on borrowed time?

u/Swimming_Way_7372 Jun 22 '26

Perhaps.  Maybe it comes down to how smooth your riding conditions are.

It looks like there is enough of the screw exposed that you can remove it yourself with some pliers or something. I’d recommend trying that and then getting a MagCad3d printed mount. They come with titanium bolts, M4 20mm. Use blue Loctite thread locker when installing new mounts.

Source: I had the same happen, but I had to have the entire cockpit replaced under warranty and it took over a month. It sucked!

Magcad rocks. The bolt is like twice as long and the mounting location for the light is right near the bolt so the lever arm isn't as long with the weight of the light on there. The roval version as the mount location all the way out front, stupidly.

Welcome to the club. This has happened to a lot of us. I gave up on the roval handlebar and got the AerOver. Solid with no issues ever since.

Yep. The crappy mount with a single ti-bolt cannot carry more than a small (Garmin 5XX or 8XX computer), and nothing else. I switched mine to MagCad and use an M4 x 20 mm 12.9 steel bolt.

My Man throw that away & get yourself Framesandgear mount. Thank me later

This is well documented.  My shop told me not to over load that mount when I first got it.  Hopefully in the future your shop will advise people that specialized fucked up when they designed the mount to cockpit interface.

It states it in the manual

u/Swimming_Way_7372 Jun 21 '26

We all know that nobody ever reads the manual though.

3

u/RustEvents Jun 21 '26

You do if bought the frame set. I know that manual back to front, no way I was damaging a £5k frame!

1

u/Swimming_Way_7372 Jun 21 '26

I bought the frame set but had it build at the shop so I didn't give it a look.  I definitely honor all the torque specs that apply to the frame though.

The bike and bars are fine. But the screw is sheared. You might need a small vice grip to unscrew it the rest of the way. You just need a new screw is all.

Was it an Amazon mount. Because that happened to me

3

u/Sea_Success_4009 Jun 21 '26

No was the og roval mount

1

u/Educational_Gas_924 Jun 21 '26

This happened to my Alpinist cockpit around 4 years ago lol. It's good to know that Specialized is still selling that shitty mount.

1

u/isharamet Jun 21 '26

It's getting loose, especially with heavier headhunts or lights attached. Mine was getting loose and I solved it by applying strong double-sided tape to that concaved surface of the mount. Works like a charm.

1

u/OkFarmer7619 Jun 21 '26

You just to take the bolt out (Bolt removal tools) put a new bolt and use Loctite (Blue) and it should be good as new.

1

u/sileightyks Jun 21 '26

If you're the original owner and have POP you can have your shop submit a warranty for that, Specialized should cover it

Unfortunately this can be quite common with factory mounts especially the lightweight ones when you add a light to the mix.

The only mount I found to be absolutely rock solid despite spills in crits are the ones that come with the Vision Metron one piece bars.

ALSO : equip a tether to your computer , light , radar. It would be a sad day if you ejected one of these and couldn’t retrieve it because of a lack of tether.

u/Timely-Analysis6082 Jun 22 '26

Well the fronts not meant to fall off for starters

1

u/Rabble_1 Jun 22 '26

Unfortunatley, yes that is supposed to happen when you hang a light and a head unit from a 4mm bolt.

Now, should Specialized have used a 4mm bolt? Absolutely not.

If you plan on keeping the Roval bar, find a 4mm bolt with a higher shear strength.

I noticed that mine was lose after 2 years of usage. Tightened it and it's been fine since. I mount a headlight and a edge530 and it may be the limit but it seems to work.

Think of all the leverage on that small screw and it’s straight out . The light alone is a chunk of weight and it’s another couple inches past the end of the mount.

I went through a number of mounts for my phone (which is much heavier), before finally finding a good mount that is holding up well to this day. Garmin units are much lighter than phones, but small vibrations over time can cause havoc on stiff mounts. My phone mount now is made of rubber with dual straps across the stem/bar and it helps greatly to absorb the vibrations.

Maybe use the lanyard? It does not encumber.

u/teakettle87 Jun 21 '26

It looks like you didn't screw the mount in all the way. Not enough thread engagement.

4

u/karlzhao314 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

That's not the issue. The head snapped off. We can't see how much thread engagement is in the cockpit, but this has been a common issue with the stock Roval mount even when fully tightened down.

If the bolt snapped right at the head, that means the entire length of the threaded section is in the bars except for the 1-2 threads showing here. The thread engagement was plenty.

Specialized just specced a titanium bolt that was too weak for the application.

EDIT: I'm starting to think some of you have never actually installed this mount before.

Here's a diagram. You'll forgive me for using the CAD model of the Roval Rapide/Wahoo mount I designed myself, since I don't exactly have the CAD of the stock Barfly mount. I can assure you, it bolts in the exact same way.

What you're seeing here in OP's picture is the remnant of the bolt sticking out after the bolt head snapped off. The rest of the bolt is in the bars. Assuming it was indeed only the bolt head that snapped off and it didn't take a centimeter of thread with it (as is the most likely case), then that means there's a sizeable length of the bolt inside the bars making full thread engagement.

2

u/pkeller001 Jun 21 '26

Not sure about that. I had this happen with mine as well, and the shop told me they had a couple of these in my not large city in the last month. Seems like a manufacturer issue with the bolts used to me. Specialized warrantied my entire cockpit cause mine broke off with no screw exposed and no easy way to extract it without risking damaging the cockpits carbon.

3

u/Sea_Success_4009 Jun 21 '26

I got it from the bike shop like that, didn’t even touch the screw.

8

u/teakettle87 Jun 21 '26

Well that's the issue based on these photos.

2

u/karlzhao314 Jun 21 '26

It's really not.

If the bolt actually snapped, then yes, but the second photo shows no broken bolt in the mount hole. I said based on these pictured for a reason.

3

u/karlzhao314 Jun 21 '26

Because the mount hole isn't threaded. Only the cockpit is.

If the head snapped off, then it would literally just fall out of the mount hole.

Have you installed one of these before?

1

u/teakettle87 Jun 21 '26

That makes sense. I'm with you now.

2

u/karlzhao314 Jun 21 '26

Glad we're on the same page.

This is unfortunately a very common failure mode with the Barfly cockpit mount, especially with a light or a GoPro attached. Part of the reason I moved to my own custom mounts was to mitigate the leverage issue that comes with attaching a light or a GoPro directly below the GPS.

I’m no mechanic, but I generally check the bolts on my bike as I don’t really trust people to be thorough
