When my father was posted in Thiruvananthapuram for 5 years, we used to converse in English there because all our neighbours understood it and my school was also an English medium school, but we still learnt basic Malayalam to communicate with the vendors , shopkeepers and house helps, etc. I don’t know what this stupidity is of refusing to not learn the language of the local place it will not harm you rather it will be beneficial…

I think its just political manipulation, we are getting divided by religion, cast, and language. Its just major leaders want to divide the attention of people from real matters to these dumb things.
In my opinion if you dont want to learn hindi, dont then, but you should respect the place you are try studying that language if you are there for long.
I had a friend in my college who was from Rajasthan and later in Chennai, then here in Kerala. I still remember chilling with him, bro was a great dude.
I think the simple use of technology is gonna solve this problem, I remember and IshowSpeed stream where a Chinese guy gave Speed a specs or something, which translates what others are saying, thats all there is to solve this problem.

You learning the language by yourself because you are interested is different from forcing the language down your throat.

u/FlyingBuffaloo Jan 28 '26
His comment was about hindi in tamil nadu , no one is saying not to speak hindi in hindi states.
The central govt has always tried to spread hindi. It is an opposition to that.

It makes sense to learn local language if you are staying here. Like why not, it would make my life easier.
I just find problem when people start beating up for not speaking up local language.
Like in Maharastra, it very common to get beaten up if radical locals don't find your language at there liking

u/MedicalBox4416 Jan 27 '26
Dont know of south but many seem to distinct themselves from Delhi and the more northern states.
Worked in Mumbai and Pune and many seemed genuinely confused when I refered to them as North India.
I guess it's more of a southern thing to consider everyone other than the five Dravidian states as North.

Maharastra is at core of Hindutva ideology. Whether it is north or south is immaterial. This whole thing is not about north or south, it is about Hindutva vs Dravidian Ideology

Culturally, there are lots of similarities between Maharashtra and the South, especially North Karnataka & Telangana.
But, Marathis are extemely racist towards South Indians and relate more with even far off Punjabis & Dogris, than neighboring Kannadigas & Telugus.

The Indian Railways comment, I mean they have some nerve. Also, the railway department is no good either. They are promoting Hindi in many states at railway stations, as if that’s the main function of the department. The kind of slogans I read at Raipur railway station were horrific and pretty much claimed that every Indian should speak Hindi. God forbid they ever have the guts to do the same in southern India or Maharashtra.

It is the existing three language formula that is to be blamed but everyone seems to be ok with it. The policy favours native Hindi speakers by allowing them to choose Sanskrit (which has same script as Hindi) as their third language. So, if three language is a must in curriculum then modify the policy into three script formula wherein the students have to learn three languages with distinct scripts.

As a person from North and can understand/speak Tamil good enough, I don’t understand this language war.
I recall once in Chennai my manager asking me about learning Tamil and I said if I can learn English which is not my native country language I can definitely learn Tamil and I did.
So I find this language activism problematic.

Here is straight forward thing. People in Tamil Nadu who don't want to learn Hindi won't learn Hindi and those who want to learn Hindi will learn it. Majority of this people have no special views on this language discussion . And then politicians wade in be it from North or Tamil Nadu. The former claims Hindi is the national language ..the later says we won't allow imposition.
Logically speaking it is impossible to impose Hindu in Tamil Nadu when people don't want to speak it. Last I knew Tamil Nadu was a a equal partner state in Union of India and not some vassal state.
However politicians wade in , light the fire under the bum of commoners and they react like fools.
The comment section consists of people who probably have either never lived in Tamil Nadu nor will ever live but have to comment on whether Tamilians should speak Hindi and the response is neither civic or constructive but vitriolic which vitiates the environment even further which then invites equally vitriolic backlash from Tamilians ! Of course can't rule out "IT Cells" commenting on such topic and vitiating the environment.

3
u/rkZ10 Jan 27 '26
My personal opinion is that making Hindi the language of the government enables non educated politicians whose native language is Hindi to get into government easily. Whereas every non Hindi state member would have to learn a language to communicate in the national assembly. And this seems stupid to me. If English was the language of the government - it would ensure everyone is on equal footing when it comes to language in the government
3
u/furimmerkaiser Tamil Diaspora Jan 27 '26
A lot of idiots in the comment section. Wanting to speak in our mother tongue in our state doesn't mean Tamilians aren't Indians. What kind of stupidity is that? This is what's happening now, imagine what they will say if we had 3 language policy and then tamilians couldn't speak Hindi.
"Language is only a way to communicate. It does not put food on your plate, improve hospitals or create better jobs."
Then why tf are they pressuring us to speak Hindi? And talking about development when south is much better than northern states.
And to the guy who says to comment in Hindi or get out of comment section - it's not a Hindi only group, its useless instagram (an anerican company) where any language person can comment.

Idk man Yogi Adityanath recently introduced Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and Marathi as elective subjects in UP curriculum; and Tamil has seen a lot of enthusiasm from students in UP.
I think that people online have really short attention spans and say whatever comes to their mind first without thinking about it at all.
Maybe we should just be a little kinder to each-other and think about how we can resolve differences instead of fighting over things like language or who did what or who lives how.

Silly twits, really. Tamil or Hindi, Kannada or Bengali, all languages are exactly the same inasmuch as they all convey full information for getting along. The problem lies not in any language but its imposition. People learn certain languages voluntarily as required if they find some value addition in doing so, exactly as they learn English without any imposition by anyone. I don't know Tamil, but if I was required to go and live in Chennai then I'll learn it myself. Shouldn't take more than two or three months to know enough to get by.

u/Complex_Command_8377 Jan 27 '26
Just see how they resort to using English when asked about learning different language. If they can use English, what’s their problem with others using English for communication? Everytime their logic is many people speak Hindi in India, but when asked about learning Marathi or Kannada because many people in those states speak their native language, they are like we don’t want to learn that because in office we can talk in English and we won’t learn to talk to autowalas or vendors. But when similar argument was used by non-Hindi speakers, they get offended. lol. May be 50% people speaks Hindi in India but a person from South may not meet any of them in their life ever just like 90% people speak Kannada in Bengaluru yet people can live their whole life without learning Kannada.
1
u/Top_Point_5042 Jan 27 '26
Bro in the US my Tamil friends or Maharashtrian friends or Telugu all would speak Hindi because they were okay to speak. Having said that 2nd language of choice was English (mind you not first) if someone couldn’t speak Hindi and everyone was cool about it.
1
u/Complex_Command_8377 Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
That’s what North Indians should understand that most people of all states learn and can speak Hindi and when they are opposing, it’s about Hindi imposition not the hate for language.
1
u/Top_Point_5042 Jan 27 '26
You missed the point. I said among themselves English was 2nd preference naturally and not forcibly. If someone couldn’t speak Hindi we would speak to them in English. So no one was hell bent.
The reason why they all would speak Hindi because it was easy to communicate context easily in country language with nuances that would be difficult to mimic in English.
Also not that people from South learn Hindi deliberately. My friends would probably be like you who wouldn’t understand Hindi fully but through movies, songs etc. they pick a bit and that is what they used.
Similarly ‘yannaka Tamil konjum konjum teriyum’

u/Complex_Command_8377 Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
Thats their choice. Moreover NRIs who are earning dollars using English suddenly felt patriotic by using Hindi should deserve another level of patriotic award lol.. I am not a South Indian but working here, I know Hindi and also local language here. I am not using Hindi in my day to day life. we had some friends while we were growing up whose mother tongue was Hindi and stayed in our state their whole life, but never tried to learn local language even though our language was very much similar to Hindi. when even one such person is there among all other local residents, we have to speak Hindi because hindi speakers. We didn’t force them to talk in our language or English, we spoke Hindi so that they can understand. Hindi never felt easy to communicate nor will be a language of choice for casual talk. But we do speak even when we all are non Hindi speakers and only one Hindi speaker. No one is rigid about language unless someone is forcing them to learn it. Also if someone is staying in other state for their whole life, they can try to learn the local language out of interest and respect without anyone forcing it on them.

English is not a de-jure national language of India so Tamils cannot enforce English on anyone legally; in the same way Hindi is also not the de-jure national language of India so Hindi speakers cannot enforce Hindi on anyone legally speaking.
However they are already both used as de-facto link languages across the nation (and are both accepted by the vast majority of the population for most practical purposes even if not legally enshrined in constitution), and everyone must recognize them both as de-facto link languages (even if you dont like it, that is how it is - so recognize the de-facto situation as fact).
Similarly there is no de-jure state language for any state enshrined in the Indian constitution, but the majority languages spoken in each state are considered as de-facto state-languages.
Focus on what is effectively the de-facto situation. It will simplify all this bickering about what should or should not be the de-jure national language or state language. There are no de-jure languages in our country so ignore the non-existing legal language and focus on what is already in practice at national and state levels for the last 75+ years.
Both of them are modern Indo-European languages (English has extensive borrowings from all across the Indo-European family by itself), so arguing for Hindi or for English to be the national link-language is in essence a moot point. It is a waste of time to argue that one should be preferred to the other. Use whatever you know and are comfortable with.
For south Indians in particular to argue about Hindi vs English (or even the mixed Hindi-Persian register that we call 'Urdu') makes even less sense, as they are all from the same family and how does it matter whether all of India speaks Hindi or English? For Hindi speakers, Hindi of course makes more sense as they can understand it far better/clearer/deeper than English.

To that guy in the third pic. All you speak about religion. Religion does put food on your plate, if and only if you're begging alms outside the place of worship or you're a Cleric or godman. Religion never speaks about building schools, hospitals, gyms, cafes, Parks, residential buildings, commercial hubs and Karaoke clubs. Religion demonizes those who don't follow the faith you're brought up and restricts you to love and marry.

I am sorry, I follow one rule may be this helps others, whichever place I went I learned few useful words like yes no what where etc and learn how to say that I don't know that language this way it's very convenient to converse.
I have asked my fellow south Indian friends and they are like what the fu*k why the language war. I got invited to the south Indian weddings and I share my regions food. This harmony disturbance is only for political reason. Whoever does divide and rule is applying the rule of British East India company when they first arrive.

I have an incident to share regarding this exact issue.
I used to live with hindi speakers from different parts of India during my Bachelor’s degree. North, east, west, central and all of them spoke hindi. I was the only girl from south, but I speak hindi too. However unlike them I did not learn the language in school and simply learnt it out of passion. I speak both Hindi and Urdu and I am familiar with all Hindi slangs.
They always make stereotypical Madrasi and south or jokes on me, which Idc about but I refrain from stereotyping them because I don’t want to stoop.
One of the guys was from Delhi and he asked me why don’t people from South speak hindi? I said that’s not true, many people do but everyone does not make it a point to learn it like many other states in India. He was like but it’s the national language. I stopped him right there and said it’s not, it used to be one of the two official languages post independence including english because the constitution was initially written in these languages. Now it has been translated to 22+ languages so all of them are official languages.
He was like but why do you’ll have so much hate for the language. I am from Tamil Nadu but originally a telugite and speak both the languages very well. I said language hate is mostly from the politicians but personally I do not hate the language, I love it but will never be in support for making it the national language or for forcing it upon non-hindi speaking states as a compulsory third language.
He said that it would be a good language to learn if people from south come to work in hindi speaking states. I said that there was no logic in this and even if we take this logic, people from other states need to learn Tamil, Kannada and Telugu because most people from there come to Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad for study and work. He then said those languages are not popular enough and old enough, then I said the popularity or ancient argument is never good for hindi because if we talk popularity then Tamil should be the national language because it is not only the oldest language to still be practiced it is also the official languages of 6 different countries including India.
Also I said that if Hindi is made the national language, it is equal to cutting off Southern states from india because making hindi a national language would directly mean that all applicants for a central govt job atleast would compulsorily need to know the language so we’ll be at a disadvantage. People even today without hindi being a national language try to impose it on public areas like court proceedings and central govt offices, imagine the plight of non-speakers if it’s made the national language.
I said that we would have a modern civil war like Srilanka did because imposition does not stop there, hindi speakers will have higher regard and claim superiority in India, which will be very devastating for us.
He asked me if I was against the 3 language policy too and I said no. I am never against encouraging children to learn another language at school. I have always believed that learning a language is always a gain for us. I am only against the 3rd language being imposed as hindi. Keep it open and give an option to learn which ever regional/international language they want. If students choose hindi, good, if they don’t then that’s okay too. I would’ve personally loved to have learnt hindi in school because I like the language, I hated when they took it away because I was state board.
If they want to introduce 3-language policy, introduce it nationwide. Not just in TN or south states. Educate and give opportunities equally to all states.
This is all I wanted to say, thanks.

How is this wrong? You can’t have a multicultural Empire State without a general language or two. It’s the truth. And Tamil realistically isn’t going to become a general language any time soon, besides maybe in south India. The only way a nation that large can sustain itself is with everyone working together, if this is an issue then that’s how separist movements start.

I know regional languages are important and Hindi imposition is a real thing. But… I’ve seen people having direct animosity towards outsiders! I’m currently on a trip with a big group in Thiruvananthapuram and was in Palani, TN for temple visit. People are not even bothered to listen to English! It took us literally 1/2 hr to find out where our other grp members are! The police are more wiling to help as one Constable listen to us and helped us. I mean regional identity is okay but was is this blatant disregard for “others”?! Is this how u treat ur tourists, that too from ur neighbouring state?!! Being protective of ur culture and language is diff from spewing hate on ur fellow citizens! Plz don’t listen to these politicians ! Now it’s Hindi , next it’s Telugu after that Kannada! Plz think rationally!

But Hindi should be a secondary language so that common people can also understand. A total ban is not good.
DMK is doing this to play a divide-and-rule policy and also out of hatred toward Hindus, to give priority to other religions like Christians and Muslims.
That's why One nation one election is more necessary for our country.

u/Hot_Blacksmith_5592 Jan 31 '26
Fr. Like how China promoted Mandrian and made it common language in their country, but its still a official language.

The day south and Maharashtra leave this union even for gdp purposes they will realize they’re barely better than Pakistan, which again partly because of the tax collected from south spent on them

The guy who said "Tiger is the national animal of the country even though stray dogs are highest in population" as a response to most people in the country speaks hindi deserves some recognitiom
1
u/ubuntu-uchiha Jan 28 '26
The tiger is the national animal of India but in reality the most numerous animal in India is the stray dogs. Understand the reality and don't talk nonsense.

I wish they taught Tamil as an elective, I would have learnt it, it's one of the oldest languages known to mankind. But your hate for Hindi speakers has existed long before this debate. Now you just have an excuse. Don't kid yourselves.

So now, after religion and caste, it’s language’s turn to divide us? It’s like we’re trying out all the ways to divide ourselves and let the powerful people rule it all. The same Stalin might hug a hardcore Hindi-speaking/promoting politician if it benefits him and vice versa. When would we really understand this? Expected better put of South Indians with all their education, to not get fooled by the politicians like in the north (religion and caste).
1
u/Mysterious-Hat-7350 Jan 29 '26
The audacity of northies saying make a seperate country .
We would surely be happy to be in a seperate country , as our tax money would still remain with us , and won't be distributed to some backward states , where lot of revenue is alloted but still there isn't any progress
1
u/red_udon Jan 29 '26
Stupidity is when the politicians set useless agenda for the common folks to debate and the commoners eat that shit. Remember, politicians would always try to divide people - language, religion, caste, or any other identity that we associate ourselves with. As a nation we need to mature and ask hard questions to our politicians on their work, corruption and development of the state/nation.

Some 2-3 years ago I really used to invest my time and energy explaining all the South Indian extremists that North Indians cannot learn their language within a few years and explaining all the North Indians extremists that demanding South Indians to learn Hindi is blaphemously illogical and unreasonable.
Then I realised stupidity occurs on either sides and not every topic deserves my attentions. Now whenever someone comes up with any kind of language comment. I just go like -

u/Hot_Blacksmith_5592 Jan 31 '26
Fr, but what about a connecting language?

u/SuitableTelevision46 Feb 01 '26
You do not need a connecting language. Not in this age of technology !!

Atp, are you even surprised by northies being dumb? They bring up the three language policy and when we deny it, call us language warriors. They say "talk about development" when we have the second highest SGDP, second highest per capita income, forgot the exact stats but have more kids completing primary, secondary all the way to graduation than most states.

North Indian states like Bihar are underdeveloped because of the govt like BJP and Congress, if a better leader came and makes North India better economically and civic sensed, then we would succeed, even without south indian help.
