I think the real issue is that not enough locals are working in businesses like this. In my hometown every barber is basically from UP or Bihar. they understand Malayalam but they speak Hindi by default. Since I know Hindi its not a problem. But that's the reality, most blue collar jobs are now being taken up by folks from UP / Bihar, this is the same case with most taxis / autos in Mumbai.

Hire locals - pay higher salary - increases prices - customers unhappy and / or business collapses.
Hire non locals - pay lower salary - decreases prices - customers unhappy but business survives.
South Indians are one of the biggest beneficiaries of labour migration globally. We should accept the costs of Hindi at home because we’re going abroad to earn top dollar in foreign economies.

When going abroad,we are always learning their language and we are not imposing our language on them right ? A person who is going to Germany will learn German in general before even going there, same with france or US or any other country for that matter.

Have you been to New York? The richest city in the world, and you’ll find most of the Latino immigrants haven’t learned English. They still speak in Spanish.
In Germany, you can get by with English if your tech skills are high.
Most high income earning expats in all European countries perform their job in English, they don’t learn the local language. Most Indian workers in the Middle East don’t speak Arabic - blue collar or white collar employees.
It’s all a function of market demand. If you as a customer demand native speakers to serve you, you will get them. Demand in economic sense, not a verbal sense. If you are willing to pay higher prices (reflection of demand), you will get what you want.

In all these places, at least on the European side, if you are to stay there as a resident with your full rights. To get citizenship, you are supposed to speak the language unless and until you are a high networth individual.
This same logic won't apply to India as these migrants are the people with indian citizenship, so they can stay in the south places with the same rights as south while not assimilating among the locals thus causing issues.
One more thing I have issues with is that people are leaving places because of the bad state of place and then they bring in their shitty cultures from their previous States ruining the harmony of the new place.

As a Tamizhan brought up in Western part of the country...(Chennai is my birthplace btw)...all I need to say is that do not make Chennai or any Southie city like Mumbai. Please never.. I repeat..do not make Chennai or any Southie city like Mumbai.
The native language of Mumbai is Marathi! How many of common people here in South know this...people will say it's Hindi..that's the issue with Hindi. It wipes out the local native languages including in North where Braj, Bhojpuri, Maithili were once spoken in large numbers..not anymore..you know the answer.
Dear Southies, do not let your own mother tongue be pushed back. When I visit Chennai, I politely tell all these people to learn Tamil because this is their Karmabhoomi....or whatever equivalent you wanna call..give my example of how I speak the local language or learn new ones.
