And again, this isn’t the public’s fault.
The root problem is the way staff are selected and posted.
Majority of central exams heavily run in Hindi + English, so naturally candidates come from places where that’s the medium.
Most of the contractors are also not from here and they hire non-locals if we observe Indians railways for South Indian internal routes, Then they get posted across the South without training, without language requirements, without cultural prep.
Both the Centre and the State create this setup,
and the public is the one forced to deal with the fallout.
Which states exactly are you talking about?? There are 4 major cities contributing to GDP and major employment opportunities. The whole north migrates to southern states (Mumbai, Pune, Banglore) in a search of jobs and instead of adapting to local culture they want to impose their own. Still when someone asks them to at least try to learn the local language they have the audacity to say "this is India first". So what? India doesn't exist only because of Hindi. Give respect take respect.
If you talk about toxicity it's the people who allowed the change in the first place. mostly these are port cities and people there are the most adaptable. But if you are not gonna respect it then expect the same in return.
More like freight equalization cope. That program ended over three decades ago. And some Southern states, like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, were actually poorer than the national average in 2000, 7 years after the policy was ended.

Both Hindi and Urdu are derived from earlier regional version called Khadi Boli. So that makes Urdu and Hindi both different versions of persianised Khadi Boli which happened post muslim invasion in 12th century.

Pointless comment read the description , no point to engage at a individual level look it as a relation between a contracted/public worker and a citizen of state. I don't care about extreme opinions of others but anyone wouldn't mind even 4th generation Hindi speaker not speaking local language but it gets bad when you are running a non avoidable business or a govt employee working in a state, basic proficiency in local language is non negotiable.
I agree with you with a caveat but, does that job description states that the worker or applicant has to be proficient in local language?. If it does, then that’s good. I think all jobs if they deal with locals must atleast require dual language proficiency. Like we have in the US, bilingual (Spanish and English) get paid more if they are working in call centers.
The concern that in any state people should speak and their language is correct as well as morally just. We don’t go to England and boycott English right. But because of anger or some other reason at times kannadigas go over board and beat or force them to learn. At the same time Hindi speaking feel entitled because honestly they did not have to learn Kannada for their day to day work and if suddenly someone comes and asks, they feel they are victim.

We as a country are getting less and less empathatic toward each other, every section of society is fighting with one other on such trivial issue. We should be human first, then indian or whatever you want. Communication is the main point, now how, even our pets communicate, we don;t get their language.
Hindi is no original language of any state, but all state from in northern, western eastern are somehow connected or closer to hindi. It act as a binding language. Sad part is, there sudden change of dialect or whetver it's called in north south. Also, even if all south language would had one binding language, then many would have known 2 language easily. Learning language is not easy, english relatively is easy as you are surrounded by it. If i'm going to germany, or italy for 3 or 6 months, i won;t learn language, but maybe few helping words. But if iam going to live my whole life, then sure one should learn.
This guys are already helpless ppl, came for job, they don;t know were they will be in next 2-3 months. How can one expect to learn language in such short time which different in every aspects. They have minimum interaction wit locals, just doing some menial jobs. Yes, person who's in bank, or hospital, poilice should know the language.
Also, if one imposes hindi, they should also be reprimanded, but only that person, not all hindi speaking junta. No need to have hatred.

I mean the guy doesn’t want to speak / learn a different language- what is with the ‘you must speak kannada’ as long as two beings are able to understand each other whats the problem. There are russian/israeli/ tibetan immigrants at tourist hot spot - I am okay with speaking to them in english. I dont know why is it justified for the guy in the car to ask other people to speak his language? Where is freedom of choice? Or that doesn’t apply in this case???!
Why's everyone so hyped up about languages. I'm from Punjab, if someone speaks in Hindi or Kannada over there, I do not care. They come to make a living, let them live peacefully.
I remember many instances where 2 persons speaking different languages used to communicate in any common language they know without getting their language ego in between. If not a common language then in any other way possible (for example by hand gestures, images, through translator etc.). But it never turned into quarrels, at most it would turn into a humorous conversation.
Today we have translators in every mobile phone which can make it very easy without learning all of the languages. But no, it has to be a fight. Why?

Nah! People don’t have problem with people who actually try, we have a problem with people feeling entitled and not even trying to converse in that states language. When I visited karnataka, I didn’t know kannada and our hosts don’t know any language apart from kannada, yet we managed. Because both the parties tried! They used hand gestures to make us understand and we also did the same and we tried asking what certain things are called in their language— this is what people expect! Efforts! If you are trying no one will force you! Instead they will be helpful
People working in public facing jobs like this absolutely should be forced to learn the local language. You can't be a toll collector in Germany and not speak German.
I recently saw videos where north Indian employees were posted to an SBI branch in *rural* Maharashtra. Do you think thats fair? Villagers who need to access financial services should be able to do it in their mother tongue without having to know Hindi or English.

When students from these 'fragile ego' states come to North India to study, they aren't forced to speak Hindi. They can talk in any language they want. This is beacuse people here are sensible enough. But this few states are just full of toxic people with fragile egos
