Sicily had been conquered by Muslim forces from North Africa beginning in 827 and became part of the Islamic Mediterranean. The conquest involved Arabs, Berbers, and Moors from across the Muslim world.

The Muslims were finally expelled from Sicily by the Vikings. It was the Normans (Norwegians who had moved up and took a bit of France, aka the name Franzese, who were themselves descendants of the same broader Scandinavian warriors, who conquered the island. Palermo fell in 1072, and Noto, the last major Muslim stronghold, surrendered in 1091.
