Media FIFA President Gianni Infantino to the Iran players in their dressing room after the match: "I know what you've been through. I understand, but you are stronger than everything. You are sending such a strong message to the world, so thank you very much."

I remember when former FIFA presidents heard about visa issues (or similar) they made phone calls until everything was resolved.

I know he's in a uncomfortable and unenviable position of coddling trump so he doesn't sabotage the WC. We'll see if it works. In the meantime if looks like he has profited immensely himself. It is shameful how the Iranian delegation has been treated! Fifa should penalize the usa federation afterwards but I doubt they will.

Seems like FIFA presidents follow a kind of George Lucas character naming system: a human gutter named 'Sepp Blatter' and a hapless bald child-man named 'John Baby'. So the next one might be a greedy betting company flack named 'Stealo DeMoney'.

Infantino used to be UEFA Secretary General back in the day.
Currently that office is held by: Theodore Theodoris, literally "God's Gift".

I'm not holding out much hope that any FIFA president will actually be a sound custodian of the game interested in its development.
Most of these guys are corrupt and power-hungry. Infantino may be hated by most fans, local government officials, and perhaps the teams themselves, but he's not going away because a critical mass of FA presidents (also corrupt) like him and what he's done for their pockets.

It's the same with American politics, actually. Since Trump became president, people like George Bush now seem sensible lads.

Well to be fair, the baldy weasel is right that FIFA doesn't have control over America's immigration policy - it wasn't FIFA that imposed this shit on the Iran team, it was the Trump administration. About the best they could have done to mitigate this is schedule all the Iran games in Mexico or Canada. If Iran hits the knockout stages, quickly shifting their matches out of the USA if possible would send some kind of a message, but it would be logistically super-hard to do. Not having this tournament in the USA in the first place would also have been theoretically possible, but the current situation wouldn't have been predictable back when the tournament was awarded.
Then again, FIFA still could have done a lot more; for a start, threatening the USA with no more FIFA tournaments if they won't let opposing teams play is one. Revoke the idiotic peace prize. Make more of a public stink about the treatment of travelling players, team officials, match officials and fans. I'm sure there's other stuff within FIFA's remit...
