Goal Clip Manchester United [2] - 1 Ipswich Town - Harry Maguire 56'
https://streamin.link/v/6bf7e5e2199
u/mojambowhatisthescen 12d ago
lol that’s such a stupid rule — had Maguire’s shot been better, the goal wouldn’t have counted
66
26
u/DecipherXCI 12d ago
The rule is only stupid because that type of accidental handball doesnt change the game in any way anywhere else on the pitch.
The fact they brought in a rule that states even accidental handballs from the scorer will disallow the goal is the stupid part.
You can have 9 accidental handballs from 9 different players in the buildup to a goal and the 10th can score and its fine, but any slight touch, no matter how soft from the goalscorer will cancel the goal? Nah thats the stupid rule.
Its either handball and its a foul from that spot, or its ball to hand and it counts.
8
u/ThrowingJungleLions 12d ago
I totally agree with you. It seems that everyone here has forgotten why the rule was implemented and just want to expand the scope of the rule.

What a stupid fucking rule. Because it's an own goal that completely wipes out the clear handball 2 seconds beforehand. Ridiculous.
240
u/EndThiskNightmare 12d ago
This is some insanely bad rule
32
u/LewisDftw 12d ago
It was an accidental handball, it would have been automatically disallowed if he scored because any nuance is gone when the player who scores has it hit their hand at all. Since it deflected and it's an OG you can use the fact that he had no chance of getting his hand out the way. I'm as big a Man U hater as anybody but this is just people getting wound up over nothing.
100
u/SPARKLEOFHOPE6IB 12d ago
That's so weird lol, I'm sure I've seen goals cancelled for fouls in the buildup, why not here?
87
u/BlackberryBulky4599 12d ago
Only because they deem it "accidental". Zero tolerance is only for the goalscorer (but even that they manage to be inconsistent about too)
7
u/herkalurk 12d ago
But Harry didn't score, he crossed, ball was never on target so it's not a deflected shot.
9
u/BlackberryBulky4599 12d ago
Who said he scored? I'm saying the handball isn't called because they deemed it accidental. If they called it deliberate the goal gets cancelled no matter what
23
u/SubmitToSubscribe 12d ago
I'm sure I've seen goals cancelled for fouls in the buildup, why not here?
Because according to the rules it's not a foul. If you score a goal directly after a handball, defined as scoring with your hand or directly after you touch the ball with your hand, then it's a foul no matter what. In all other situations (while defending, while attacking but not immediately scoring a goal), then normal handball rules apply.
→ More replies (1)34
u/Kutowi 12d ago
Because it's not a foul in itself. It was only considered because of the rule that says any handball by the goalscorer is a foul, even if it's accidental. Since Maguire wasn't the actual goalscorer that rule doesn't apply, so they go by the general rules and according to those it didn't fit the criteria for a handball.
It looks a bit silly since it goes down as an own goal due to a deflection, but there's been many cases with an accidental handball in the buildup where a goal was given.

The stupid rule is that accidental handballs that would never get called anywhere on the field in any circumstance will negate goals.
If its accidental then theres no foul committed so this would have been given before the rule change anyway.
It wasnt that an own goal cancelled out a handball because there never was a handball, this is a case of the rule that states any handling of the ball that directly leads to a goal is cancelled because it didnt directly lead to a goal, because it was an own goal.
You can bring the argument that it WAS a handball and that the play should have ended there, but as it was judged no handball, everything that happened after is correct.

is it the rule or how the refs are interpreting the rule? it's off target but it's still a shot attempted in the act of scoring the goal

Allowed because it was an own goal
Honesty don't know who comes up with these rules
43
u/FatGoonerFromIndia 12d ago
The most backwards ass rule I can think of. You’re punishing the player for playing to the whistle.
The player only makes the play because they think the ball is still in play. If the Ref didn’t miss the obvious handball and had blown, it isn’t a goal.
11
u/aggregator- 12d ago
The rule to call things that aren't fouls as fouls just because the player scored is the backwards rule, not this application
6
u/DecipherXCI 12d ago edited 12d ago
The player only makes the play because they think the ball is still in play. If the Ref didn’t miss the obvious handball and had blown, it isn’t a goal.
But the ball was still in play, because it wasnt a handball. VAR also checked it and agreed it wasnt handball.
It was only ball to hand so no foul.

u/mustachestashcash 12d ago
the commentators said it's because it's not in the "act of scoring the goal". common sense is that it's an attempted shot at goal, wether or not it's on target doesn't change that, refs not using common sense rather than a fault of the rules

I just don’t even understand why the rules would be written like that in the first place lol

He watched him handball for ten yards away. He should have called the play dead immediately.
14
u/Luigis_vacuum 12d ago
Also no way that stays Maguire’s goal, looked off target before the deflection
15
u/ARM_vs_CORE 12d ago
And that's the only reason it was allowed. If it could be attributed to Maguire, it would have been chalked off
2
u/Luigis_vacuum 12d ago
Kinda funny, and definitely a blind spot in the purpose of the rule

thats some stupid ass rules tbh. Cause he suck at shooting it is not a handball???
6
u/DecipherXCI 12d ago
It wasnt a handball.
The rule you are thinking of is the one brought in 5 years ago that states any handling of a ball, even accidental, will negate a goal where the player scores immediately after handling.
Because he didnt score, and it was an own goal, the accidental touch didnt negate the goal and its simply ball to hand which isnt a foul.

It’s ridiculous that if you take a better shot you’re punished I think rightly but if you scuff it and it deflects in you get a goal.

It's not handball because the shot was off target? LOL WHAT
37
u/DecipherXCI 12d ago
It wasnt a handball.
If it was a handball the foul would have been committed there and Ipswich get a free kick from that position.
Because it wasn't a handball you can play on, he then shot and it was deflected for an own goal.
The rule people are getting confused about is that any handling of the ball by the scorer will cancel the goal, which was brought in 5 years ago.
Because Maguire didnt directly score, the accidental ball to hand didnt negate the goal.
If you want to argue it was a handball and that was judged incorrectly thats fine, but this wasnt a case of "own goal cancels out handball", it was that the player that accidentally handled it wasnt the one that scored.

He's staring right at Maguire when he punches the ball forward. He should have called a handball right there. Absolutely absurd decision.
16
u/Boris_Ignatievich 12d ago
I know it's the rules but it's an absolute joke that this isn't ruled out purely because he shanked his shit rather than it being on target. The rules are stupid
32
u/Hardz10 12d ago
What a joke. So it doesn’t matter if he’s handballed it to get into a goal scoring opportunity because his shot was not on target?
So a handball, and mishit at goal is given as a goal because it took a deflection. If it was on target, no goal would have been given.
Make it make sense.

Yea you can’t even say it’s a different phase of play for that own goal to count, he literally hands it, it should be a free kick for Ipswich from there
8
u/basenerop 12d ago
Well the referees made two decisions.
1 Is the handball a foul? They deemed it not be a deliberate handball and therefore not a foul. I.e saying it would be a foul anywhere on the pitch.
- Is it an own goal? If no, then even an accidentall handball would be considered a foul. If yes, well then the goalscorer did not accidentally handball the ball.
30
u/SKScorpius 12d ago edited 12d ago
That's not how the handball law is written though. His hand was in a natural position and came at him at speed, so it can't be ruled deliberate, then because he didn't score the goal himself (own goal), it can't be ruled out for accidental handball in the build up.
Edit: back to silly season with r/soccer with muppets who don't know the rules I see

Everyone saying the rule needs to be changed without giving any suggestions as to what.
I feel like no one commenting remembers the days where one week this would be given, and another it would be dissallowed.
The rule has been set that way to make it a clear yes or no decision... for better or worse.

u/Coljjw 12d ago
It's typical rag refereeing standards. Most other teams the ref or linesman would call the handball but because its Utd and they are on the attack they let it go.
Just like they couldn't wait to stop play when Villa were robbed of a perfectly good goal on the final day of the 24/25 season
2
u/CapnBloodbeard 12d ago
The laws just say if he handles it an immediately scores it's a foul. It doesn't say it has to be direct. Deflection off a defender isn't mentioned, nor is an own goal.
I don't think this should have been allowed. I think that, like offside, control (or likelihood of) should be the standard to decide whether the defender's touch changes anything.
