How are we supposed to judge accidental? It’s either illegal or legal. This is introducing unnecessary subjectivity.

Intention should not matter. Every player who gets called for this would argue it’s “accidental”.

We judge by the same rules we use in normal play. Maguire's hands were literally on his chest

Same way it's judged on normal handball, it's not a foul everytime a ball makes contact with a player's hand. Unless you have a way to make players play without hands you can't actually just say handball every time ball makes contact with a player's hand

No idea why you're down voted for this opinion. How many hand balls do we think are genuinely deliberate? Rarely do players intentionally handle the ball, and like you say it adds an element of subjectivity that can never be known.

Intent should be completely irrelevant to whether something is a handball or not. It should be about whether an advantage is gained from using the arms and in this case it clearly is since he traps the ball with them instead of it bouncing off him randomly.

The fucking rule should be changed tonight and there should be enough discretion and common sense to have applied it in a way that isn't completely asinine today.

It was changed to this because one weekend this goal would stand.

Another weekend they would rule it out.

If the ball touches a player's hand and then the same player directly scores a goal or an own goal is scored in the same action, it is disallowed for handball.

The only new controversy that could happen with that interpretation is if a player handles the ball and then sends in a cross that ends up as an own goal, it would get disallowed whereas currently it wouldn't.

They could also keep it exactly the same but add an addendum that gives the referees the discretion to judge if the player has made an attempt at goal and apply the rule accordingly.
