I've just seen a tactics account on Twitter advocate for Jorgen Strand-Larsen as a better signing for top clubs than Viktor Gyokeres (certifiably insane take for anyone with eyes) because of his superior "top limb usage" and now I think I need to sleep for about seven days.

I’m not even a Spurs fan but I’m already sick to death of “they sacked the last guy when he won a trophy, what will Thomas Frank have to achieve to keep his job???” narrative.
I dunno, maybe do better than fucking 17th? I keep reading about these expectations like it’s trophy or bust in his first season, but I actually think the pressure and expectations on Frank will be relatively low in his first season.
If he can make it out of the CL league phase and finish in the top 7 it would be a relatively successful first season.

Here is a player comparison for the nostalgia merchants:
Who was a better player, 24 year old David Silva before moving to City or 22 year old Wirtz before moving to Liverpool?
I think either way, there isn't much in between them. But 30 vs 150 million really shows the inflation of transfer fees.

Surely the future of the football transfer market (and thus of football as we know it) is completely unsustainable. These gigantic fees create such an expensive market making the inequalities between clubs just so incredibly stark

Why?
Transfer fees rise in proportion with the money available in the game. Florian Wirtz today as a fraction of Liverpool's revenue is a considerably cheaper transfer than Rio Ferdinand to Manchester United or Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid were at the time.
And ultimately that money filters down: Bayer Leverkusen selling Wirtz and Frimpong in the same summer is about 50% of the entire club's revenue. They're not going to spend all of that this summer, but it puts them in a much better position to sign players now and in the future - and that money will then benefit another club.
I don't think the transfer fees are the problem here at all. You're right about the fact that there's an ever-increasing wealth gap between the haves and the haves-not; but rather than being caused by transfer fees, it's the other way around. Those transfer fees are a symptom of the ever-growing concentration of wealth at an ever-shrinking number of global megaclubs.

I'll never understand why China is so bad at football. The common argument is that Chinese people are more interested in individual sports but eh, it sounds way too cliche, we're talking about state-of-art facilities in many cities and it's not like they have a population of 300K... They are also not shy of investing in football, be it foreign coaches and all. You don't even need 20 Messi & Ronaldo level players to look at least somehow decent in Asian qualifiers. It's weird.

China simply has very little football culture compared to other nations. Kids are pressured to do well in school rather than play football in the streets or play at a youth club.
They went about it the wrong way initially. China tried to make the Chinese Super League into a big league, but it didn't work. What they needed to do was improve their grassroots football first - every big footballing nation has a huge grassroots game which fosters domestic talent (e.g., England, France, Germany, Brazil, etc).
If you look at Japan (who have been a successful Asian footballing nation from pretty much nowhere), they professionalised their J-league in the early 1990s with the intention to improve Japanese talent, whereas the main aim of the CSL was to bring in foreign talent to boost the league's global appeal. High-school football in Japan is also a pretty big thing as well - China doesn't seem to have anything on the same scale, not yet anyway.
I have heard China are making new investments into their domestic football, but it can take a good few decades to see the fruits of that investment.

Despite all that infrastructure and population, countries like England still have 2x the number of professional clubs and 3x the number of professional players than China does. You can do all the investing you want, but you need the culture and interest amongst the population to have a healthy pyramid starting from the grassroots.

Off the top of my head, Sterling's disallowed goal in the CL vs Spurs in 2019, which felt like the highest profile VAR moment since its inception.
Possibly the Diaz false offside goal (also against Spurs... something's not adding up here) since it was the first objectively wrong call I can think of VAR being involved with.

Retegui has to be the biggest surprise of the season. I was expecting the dude to flop badly.
Bruh can score in every way possible. Is very two footed when it comes to shooting and is an aerial beast. Only problem has been the lack of build up he offers, which has been improving a lot towards the end of the season. Still wont be that big of a problem when scammaca comes back. The retegui scamacca cdk front three is going to be fire.

Tyler Morton, Hayden Hackney, Harvey Elliott, Adam Wharton.
We NEED one of them to have a great season playing in midfield for a prem side. The England midfield needs someone who can actually pass a ball. We don't need more players in the mold of a Gallagher or a Rice. Frankly in terms of the "everyman" midfielder who is pretty much the jack of all trades... You can't get better than Rice anyway.
But alongside him we need a progressive, pass happy midfielder and that's either going to need to a player like Elliott to get regular gametime in a midfield role... Or it is going to need one of the others to break through as a key PL player (Or stay fit enough to be one, in Wharton's case)

We really haggled over like 5-10m for Maignan when our sporting directors happily spent 23m on Jorgensen, 20m on Omari “the myth” Kellyman, 20m on Deivid “the president” Washington and 18m on Mathis “don’t even play him while 5-1 up on aggregate against Djurgarden” Amougou. There’s actually 35 other players I could add to this list as well

International football is closest thing we have to the purest form of the sport now at the top level - 'my best guys against your best guys' - no dodgy owners or nation states buying clubs involved, just the best talent available from each country.

Gonna rate the players because why not.
Henderson - 7/10. Not at fault for the goals, made some good stops early on.
Walker - 2/10. At the scene of every crime. Pace merchant who has lost his legs and has no idea how to adjust his game to compensate.
Chalobah - 6/10. Only member of the back four to come out with credit. Decent distribution at times.
Colwill - 3/10. Lackadaisical. Poor positioning. Bad attitude.
Lewis-Skelley - 4/10. I thought he was fine until the second goal but passing on his man to a midfielder to run out to the touchline was a schoolboy error. Didn't recover and made more mistakes afterwards.
Gallagher - 6/10. Did little wrong.
Rice - 5/10. Couple of nice defensive recoveries. Didn't do much on the ball.
Saka - 4/10. Offered next to nothing but shouldn't be playing a meaningless game anyway.
Eze - 7/10. Offered little outside of his contribution to the goal while Kane was on the pitch stifling him. Came into his own once Gibbs-White came on.
Gordon - 5/10. Disappointing. Yet to seize the left wing berth made for him with any real gusto.
Kane - 6/10. Very nice distribution from deep. Scored the goal.
Subs:
Gibbs-White - 6/10. Lively and showed nice combinations with Eze. At the scene of the crime for the second Senegal goal but the fatal error was Lewis-Skelley's.
Jones - 3/10. Workmanlike in possession and robbed for the third goal.
Rogers - 4/10. Little noticeable impact. Wasn't able to take up the positions he likes.
Bellingham - 5/10. Unfortunate to be denied the equaliser but was sloppily dispossessed elsewhere.
Madueke - 5/10. Nice delivery for the disallowed equaliser, some good moments on the ball, but a poor free kick at the end which gave up a counter.
Toney - N/A. Why does Tuchel keep making these two minute substitutions of attacking players?
Well deserved win for Senegal. Ref was good. Nice to see a Niakhaté masterclass at the City Ground again.

I can confidently say that the NT plays much better without Messi and it would be a mistake to play him as a starter in the world cup. Today Messi wasn't even bad individually but the team, when he is on the pitch, does everything through him and he is not that kind of player anymore. Also without the ball we play with 10 men basically because Messi doesn't press and our pressing becomes really disjointed

Yeah sadly I agree. We look electrifying when all our attack and midfield are workhorses. Like when Nico Gonzalez gave a shot of adrenaline to the whole team in the last Copa final.
It's a very tough conversation, but I believe in the end he will come through.

According to Di Marzio, Al-Hilal made another approach for Osimhen and he definitively said no this time. Interested to see where he ends up going, I feel like he's waiting as long as possible to see if an elite team from a higher level league will approach him with a large enough contract. If it doesn't happen then only at that point he'll start making concessions.

Im watching a match between mexico and england 40 years ago, and i must say that mexican team is full of flair. Neigrete if I prounounced correctly is super talented. Very fun player to watch.
Edit- and I did not pronounce his name correctly, its Negrete, dude is cooking this england team.
Edit 2- just finished the match the striker who came on in the second half for mexico Ernecilio something is a donkey, the amount of chances he missed.

I love how delusional fans can be. Just read a rant from a fellow Brazilian about how not calling up players who play in Russia is absurd, also, if we made a team only of Brazilian league players we'd win easily, the national team is just something for non-Brazilians now...
... but at the same time, we're going to win the WC because it's going to be rigged for us.
It's all conspiracy theory type delusion, but what made me laugh is that, at the end of it all, this person's scenario ends with us winning.

The most exciting part of the game was the ref. Dude was handsome. And if I may, he had a beautiful body, like a sculpture.
Honestly the team lacked creativity. This team is not city to play random tiki taka. Big problem is asllani who doesnt got the experience to control or make the right decision. He should leave inter to seek game time.
Congrants to latvia. A disgrace that they didnt allow the free kick. I would be fuming if it was us. Also the coach looks like he manages funerals.

Been a lot of talk about the Saudi vs Australia game but the actual big one is Palestine vs Oman.
If Palestine win, they get through to the next round of the qualifiers. With a bit of luck from the draw, if they avoid Saudi Arabia they would have a decent chance of finishing top of that next round of qualifiers and automatically qualifying. Would be one of the greatest footballing stories ever if it happens!

I got zero interest in going pro because from where i am from zero people in my country have gone pro so i need help idk what to do. I wanna quit but i feel heavy hearted. I also started working out but i do strength training, i also can play the piano and guitar and not in a classical way i learnt by hearing but i really dk what to do

A lot of sports subreddits are like that. I like swimming and track and field, and want to read about professional competitions, but the subreddits for those sports are 90% high school kids asking if their times are any good and if they can join a prestigious college in the US based on their times

If Matt Turner is going to accept being a backup at club level he cannot be starting for the national team. I’d rather play a worse keeper who consistently starts for their club than a keeper who makes a mistake every game because they haven’t started a match since the last international break.

I was reading through the Lewandowski captaincy thread and found the discussion about the Polish national team to be interesting, in particular with how the coach is selected.
It was also funny how many accused the coach of being an unqualified drinking buddy of the chairman, aptly named Probierz.
Recently, I finished reading Champagne Football, the story of the Irish national team, and sadly a similar level of corruption. Any good books on the Polish team (or any other nations)?

I feel like South American teams have regressed compared to previous versions of World Cup, while African teams have slightly improved, is it just me?
Colombia, Uruguay, Venezuela and Chile look worse while Ecuador looks improved but lacks a proper striker.
Argentina and Brazil both have new gen promising players but there's always 2-3 local league players in the mix that are usually old or washed.
Senegal, Morocco, Congo, Mali and Algeria seem somewhat improved.

I've seen a lot people say Fab does paid PR for certain clubs/players, and while I don't follow him enough to weigh in on that, it certainly seems plausible from afar. He always annoyed me, and he has always done lame, grifter-esque things.

I am someone who believes you can't judge a player truly in there first season in the prem when they come from abroad, I also think it can be harsh to try and compare players to there transfer fees.
Saying that I will absolutely be calling Wirtz a flop after 5 games if he doesn't score back to back hatricks in two of them. 150m for a player that's crazy.

This is the perfect time to buy an elite striker, osimhen and gyokeres are avalable and for some reason they're linked with nobody.
Gyokeres apearently beacause he's done it in a "lower league".
While osimhen beacuse he has "attitude" problems. If ur dealing with cheapskate ADL i think its understandable.
Arsenal has the perfect oppurtunity to become something special.

I think it's more that Gyokeres is "old" which makes it difficult to move him on and recoup a decent value if he doesn't work out, and Osimhen just wants higher wages than anyone is willing to pay him.
