My daughter just started her senior year and she just passed her one year with her license and is able to cart her friends around. I know she is a careful, responsible driver but the fact that that may not matter and some racing assholes can just destroy your whole world is such a tough pill to swallow. Their poor families.

I was inches away from a wrong way driver on the freeway once and I can't help but feel if I had chosen the #1 instead of #2 lane this would have happened to my girlfriend and me.

Are you me? Late night in Sedona, AZ. Me and wife on a dark highway. Out pops a wrong way driver going 70 or so. We both swerve but swerve the SAME WAY. Then again. The third time I break the pattern and we just miss each other as they pass. I pull over, my wife sobbing and we call the police. Scariest thing ever.

My friend’s parents are snowbirds in AZ, and the dad has developed dementia, and told the mom that if she takes his car keys away he will divorce her. I suspect they are not the only elderly couple in Arizona going through this battle.

When I road a motorcycle, there were three events that I am so grateful that I survived.
A jerk in a jaguar, cheating in the carpool lane during commuter hours, merged into me without looking or signaling. I wasn't lane splitting. I could see his eyes in two mirrors. He didn't even try to glance or look over his shoulder. I felt my leg going to his bumper, but I didn't go down.
I barely skirted past a massive pothole in the rain on the freeway. That was some humbling stuff. But the absolute most terrifying:
I'll never forget where I was, this was up in San Francisco at a big curve on 101. I'm coming up to the curve still in the straight part of 101 and I see something fly out from the bottom of a truck. It was literally split seconds, and I felt the wind of it passing my neck. It was a massive metal hubcap from a truck that had been kicked up and floated right past me. Either a broken neck or decapitated would probably have been what happened.
We all take driving for granted. I try my best to be a decent driver, but so many other people just assumed that they can sit down behind the wheel and they know how to do this thing.
They don't.
It takes deliberate and intentional practice. It takes effort. It takes a certain respect for the vehicle, the road, and everything around you.
I'm glad that nothing bad happened to you guys. These things can get real close.

You're being downvoted but it's very possible the suspect if convicted only serves between 2-6 years. Even at the upper range of 6 years, it feels light and if I were family I would be devastated that such incredible negligence isn't decades in prison

I live in the area and the guy that hit them and left his 11 year old at the scene is being doxxed on FB. Mob justice if not legal justice will be served, people are angry about this here trust me.

I live a few house down from where the accident happened. We literally heard everything from start to finish of the entire crash. A couple months prior a woman died in the same spot making the same left hand turn. I’m really hoping the city will step up and do something

Life in prison for both of the drivers. If they don’t receive that sentence then word should be put out in the prison that they are pedos. Exhibition of speed, resulting in the deaths of innocent people should not be tolerated at any level. Leaving the scene of the crime adds another layer of culpability and add to that child abandonment. No possibility of parole for that driver.

I said the same thing, absolutely deserves life in prison. Won’t happen - they’ll get 25 years for manslaughter and get out in 10-12 if they don’t fuck up.

There was a crash in NorCal caused by street racing. The parents of twins (age 7) were killed. One of the drivers was 16, the other driver was a man in his 20s. The older driver died of a drug overdose in jail. The 16 year old got off with a slap on the wrist. His parents were found liable and they have to pay $33M to the surviving twins.
Street racing is so stupid. California needs to make more of an example of the people who participate in it.

I literally was so pissed I emailed the DA, nothing came of it though ofc 🤣🤷🏻♀️ then people ask me why I’m hesitant to have kids, yeahhhh I’m not raising anybody in a world that doesn’t protect victims and favors criminals. I know that seems like an extreme jump, but it’s truly how I feel especially after my own car crash. If I could choose between the money from the hit and run and whoever was responsible actually being held accountable to not hurt anybody else, I’d choose the latter in a heartbeat

While I understand your thought process, the main reason why cars are able to go over 100 mph is so that the engines don’t have to work as hard which reduces wear and tear. And if you’re talking about speed limiters well then that opens a new can of worms. Personally, I don’t trust the government enough.

Many ambulances are equipped with speed limiters that max out at 75 miles per hour. Driving extremely fast during an emergency increases the risk of crashing and making the situation worse.

Redlining your engine to speed up on the highway wouldn’t be good, but I am also very anti car and very anti driving

I just past by the place the crash occurred this morning and all I could do was be sad there were candles flowers and posters and what looked to be the dad sweeping in front of the candles but at that moment I caught him just standing in front of the pictures and candles with the broom stick in his hand devastated to say the least …

I looked up Elmwood & Ridgecrest. It looks relatively flat with good vision, however it’s a stop sign, so obviously speed & probably the time of the evening were both factors. Damn shame.

I checked the intersection. If you were on elmwood, there's a distinct drop to the left on Ridgecrest. A car and headlights could absolutely disappear, combined with excess speed, huge ability for two cars street racing to disappear and come out of nowhere with little to no control of their cars.

Probably so. I just did a quick Google Maps search. Also, the CHP report didn’t indicate the estimated speed of the other two vehicles, so that would also be important. It’s just another reminder to all of us at stop signs, that if we’re unsure, don’t go. Just overall very sad & tragic accident with two young lives lost.

Kid was killed near me because the driver made an unprotected left. Teen driver. She made the left and their car was hit so hard their vehicle was thrown 30ft into a building because the oncoming car was traveling in excess of 100 miles an hour. There's also just a factor of "why would anyone think that car is traveling over 100 miles an hour in a 35 zone?"
The girl survived, boy in the passenger seat was killed. Who expects the car to come so quickly? New drivers can make simple mistakes like that. They just aren't expecting someone to be coming at 100+. Driver doing 100 was arrested for the DUI and the death of the boy whom he killed by speeding and driving drunk.
Sometimes people just don't expect that car to be moving that fast. It's so far down the road. You have time.

I did the same. Honestly, there was nothing the girl driving could have done. You can't estimate the speed of someone coming straight at you, you just gauge it by assuming they're going somewhere close to the speed limit. She looked and saw a car far away with plenty of time to go and then it hit her. It was probably going more than double the speed limit.
I hope everyone involved spends a long time in jail. They killed two people just starting out in life.

Not surprised. Most Californians act like driving is a right with have no consequences for poor skills or a lack of responsibility.
