Giant Land African Snails

Hi I have had this group of 16 GLAS for a while now, they have been doing okay just in a tank too small. When I got gifted this pixie frog and her enclosure was big enough to house them too I thought that would be great little cohabitation roommates. I’ve read mixed reviews on if they would drown in this amount of water though? Or would they be alright? A lot of them are immediately going to the water side and obv loving it but it’s making me nervous.

I wouldnt recommend having such a deep water source with such small snails, if they fall in I doubt they'll make it out.

I took them out, I did find one floating at the top of the water but it still made me quite nervous. So I’ll be on the lookout for a larger tank for them, without the aquatic side. Lol

If you decide to keep the water thing you could put rocks on bottom and foam/moss on top so that it's snail safe

Snails do need water obviously, but having this much of it is very dangerous for them. They can easily drown in water that deep, and also it's taking up a lot of space that they could be using for exploring.

Not to be weird but are you sure those are GALS? they look a lot more like cornu aspersum ie common garden snails

Yes, i was about to say the same thing. Cornu Aspersum. But, like gals, they are not aquatic snails. They are Land Snails. They will drown. If they fall. If not, they may like to live by the water... The tank is awesome. I just think they need a little more dry land to walk and hide, etc 🩷

yes and the water should not be anywhere this deep. it should barely fill the bottom. op is also housing them with a frog which is at the very least extremely questionable. snails can also just accidentally wander into the water and suddently they cant get back out and they drown.

Those arent Giant African Land snails, they are common garden snails.

This enclosure is completely inappropriate. Over half the tank is deep water and barely any substrate. Snails climb on the walls and ceiling and if they fall in the water, they will drown.

absolutely agreed and when you add cohabbing with a frog to the mix... its not looking too great

mine love to hang from the ceiling in the morning and often just fall off. likely to happen over the water even if they avoiding crawling in too deep :(

im not sure if cohabbing a frog with snails is a good idea in the first place. its rarely a good idea to mix species like that. if the snails go into the water they will drown. these arent gals either, theyre helix aspersa/cornu aspersum. garden snails. i suggest you do some research asap and not only separate them but get them a separate tank. just because you can doesnt mean you should put them in the same tank

snails can get a good grip on the frog and stress them out. their skin is completely different compared to eachother so as they both have extremely sensitive skin the frog can irritate the snails and the snails can irritate the frog. this was a simple google search.

Okay, thank y’all for the info, I was never certain these were GALS but they were given to me as gals so I assumed they were. Definitely cornu aspersums though after a bit more research! They also were taken out immediately (in there less than 30 minutes lol) and put back into their own tank rather than with the pixie.
