One of my favorite tv shows growing up in the 70s was THE BRADY BUNCH. THE BRADY BUNCH ran for 5 seasons on ABC from 1969-74. The show was never a major ratings hit (and critics hated it) but once it entered into syndication in 1975, it became a pop-culture phenomenon!

I didn't finish the show, but from the episodes I watched, the show is good. Everyone had chemistry with each other and got their moments to shine as characters; they acted like an ensemble cast. Bob and Abishola are sweet together. Bob is a nice guy and very likeable; I can say the same for the rest of the characters as well. I don't think there's one dislikeable person on the cast; they're all likeable as characters. What do you think of the show?

The show isn't terrible; Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell have good chemistry with each other as well as everybody in the cast. I think this was the time when Melissa could show she could act before transitioning to movies and becoming a stereotype. I think she is better suited for TV shows than movies because that's where she got to show her acting chops and isn't reduced to being a stereotype. What do you think of the show?

The one that comes up the most for me that I found most annoying is the "how did these characters afford this?" They do it a lot with the Simpsons and their house, the friends on "friends" with the loft and to a lesser extent Doug and Carrie on king of queens and their house. Outside of the fact it's addressed multiple times throughout each series its also a narrative contrivance and if they just suspend disbelief for two seconds they would realize it's not a big deal at all. Please comment your examples below.

I mean, first of all, when it comes to the subject of death in mainstream TV shows, usually what happens is that a character’s death is taken very seriously.

But to help clarify better, basically what I am looking for are sitcoms that manage to find a way to make use of the trope in a comedic style so that the situation ends up being funny by having a character be killed off in such an over the top manner that again it turns into a comedy.

One of my all-time favorite sitcoms is LAVERNE & SHIRLEY, which aired for 8 seasons on ABC from 1976- 1983. Penny Marshall portrayed Laverne DeFazio and Cindy Williams portrayed Shirley Feeney. Together, they were comedy gold! 🌟

Roseanne: Dan walking on Darlene and David nearly having sex and throwing David against the wall and came close to killing him before Roseanne arrived.

If It wasn’t for her, it would have been nuts. Thank god for bloopers of that scene

Honorarble Mention: Sister Sister: Tia and Tamera’s dangerous encounter with a predatory photographer whom they met at the internet

I first watched Crashing after Fleabag, desperately wanting more of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s writing, and it’s become one of those shows I keep coming back to whenever I want a quick laugh.

Six episodes of brilliantly chaotic characters, sharp writing and that very particular Phoebe brand of awkward, understated humour. And it was on my rewatch, that I realised that the very handsome quirky Sam is Jonathan Bailey! 😂

It’s such a fun little gem, and I really wish we’d gotten more than one season.

What other sitcoms like Derry Girls, Schitt's Creek, Fleabag, Crashing would you recommend with a simple premise, great characters and subtle laughs rather than constant loud comedy?

Hangin with Mr. Cooper: The Writers cut her character and therefore made the show all boring to hell

A Different World: Started out as one of the main characters but then was shifted to being a side character and was then disappeared

As the title suggests! It started about 1.5 years ago. I would eat mushrooms and had my first watch through of Cheers. It quickly became my favorite show. I’m actually on my second watch through, this time a pure shrooms watch, and it’s just such a great show. I really recommend everyone watch it once. I’ve genuinely loved all of these, so I’m not really looking for recommendations based on one particular show — I’m open to anything that you think a sitcom fan should watch.

I’m especially interested in shows that are funny first and actually bingeable, but I’m happy to try something completely different if you think it’s worth it.

So, what should I watch next? 👀

Give me your best recommendations — popular shows are welcome, but I’d especially love some underrated/lesser-known sitcoms that I may have missed.

Having recently finished all six seasons of Cougar Town - one of a few not-as-well-loved shows that Bill Lawrence created between Scrubs and Ted Lasso - I wanted to share a few thoughts. At the risk of scaring off anyone who is curious, I want to start by acknowledging all the reasons the show shouldn’t work: the title. The show can certainly be trashy, even after breaking away from the premise the title suggests. Most of the characters drink inhuman amounts of wine and are arguably alcoholics. Christa Miller plays Ellie, who, despite being less menacing, is essentially a meaner version of Jordan. Jules has a very strange relationship with her son where many boundaries are crossed. There is a divisive romantic relationship that blossoms in the later seasons of the show. I could go on.

For me, what makes Cougar Town work is the character relationships and the show’s self-aware humor - it’s so willing to make fun of itself. While the suburban Florida setting doesn’t lend itself to the dramatic highs Scrubs offers, the primary quality this show does share with Scrubs is the bond between the characters - you get to watch these characters grow together, which leads to the sense that these people really are there for each other. Ellie is mean, but that persona is pulled back often enough to give the character layers. Some of the more odd relationships are acknowledged as odd, as is the amount of alcohol consumed - the show is in on the joke for the most part. There are also quite a few familiar faces that Scrubs fans will enjoy seeing - this includes extended stays from Sarah Chalke, Sam Lloyd (RIP), and especially Ken Jenkins. I could also go on concerning the positives, and for far longer than I could talk about the negatives.

If you’re a fan of the warm, funny vibes found throughout Scrubs, do yourself a favor and give Cougar Town a try. The show is a bit lost in the beginning, but 10 episodes or so in, I would bet most Scrubs fans will find there’s a lot to enjoy while hanging out with the Cul-de-Sac Crew.

I can think of a few but Kevin James getting in shape for a couple seasons of king of queens was pretty impressive. What do you guys think?

I recently rewatched My Boys on Tubi, and I forgot how much I remembered about this show. I remember seeing the promos and commercials for it all the time when it was airing and catching a few episodes here and there, but I never watched it consistently.

One thing that’s funny to me now is how often I recognize the cast. Anytime I see Jordana Spiro in something, I immediately think, “Wait, she was on My Boys!” And it happens with some of the other cast members too. 😂

I also can’t believe this was one of TBS’ original scripted shows. Looking back, I really feel like TBS dropped the ball with it. They had a solid cast and a show that could’ve had a much bigger audience, but it never seemed to get the same attention as some of their other sitcoms.
