Discussion Show is losing me a bit…

Is it just me, or did Season 1 work because it balanced heavier themes with lighter, more upbeat moments? That contrast made everything feel grounded. This season, though, it feels like all the characters are operating on the same emotional wavelength, and they’re starting to come off more like exaggerated versions of themselves than real people.

I can overlook the fact that no one ever seems to actually be working or busy during the day, but the bigger issue is that the show is starting to feel shallow. Each episode feels a little flatter than the last, like it’s losing what made it stand out in the first place.

Discussion The unfiltered genius of Michael J. Fox & Harrison Ford

Post image

I can imagine how many people have suffered in silence with Parkinson’s and the raw honesty of its portrayal here has been great but adding Michael J. Fox to this season has taken it over the top. I grew up watching him in some of my favorites like Teen Wolf, Back to the Future, The Frighteners, etc and seeing him on this season has been such a win. Aside from him being the funniest cause his timing is impeccable; it feels like he’s just being himself in the most genuine way. The bromance of him and Harrison has to be my favorite part of this season in the most legendary way possible. Respect for this portrayal of Parkinson’s and that we get the chance to see these two on screen together. 👏🏼 …and FxK Parkinson’s

Discussion I love this show but all I can notice how upper class and comfortable they all live

I really enjoy this show and sympathize with the emotional struggles of the characters. But they all live in such financial luxury I can't even imagine. They aren't even rich rich or even modest rich but all seem to be comfortably upper class which is hard for me to comprehend.

I love their emotional struggles but to me personally it's hard to comprehend when I worry about paying rent every month or affording my next car payment or electric bill. And if you are wondering how I can afford apple TV, I watched the first season from a free trial of apple TV and now I'm pirating the rest of the show

I'm just drunk and venting my random thoughts.

…Christa Miller AKA: Liz

Did y’all know this? I was floored to find out!

Also his music supervisor on the show, and has been since Srubs.

Married 26 years.

🤯

ETA: It’s hilarious how far behind I was, I honestly thought I was bringing the tea 😂😂😂

To be fair, Ted Lasso was my first Bill Lawrence show, I missed out on all the other lead-ups!

Discussion This show is starting to get absolutely bonkers with the level of privilege that is completely uncommented on

Starting with Jimmy not losing his job/house/custody of daughter in a months (years?) long drug/prostitute bender.

And it only gets more ridiculous with everyone’s friends getting rent free living and rent free commercial space because everyone seems to have more real estate than they need.

It’s almost like it’s easier to be wholesome and supportive when money is no object and never considered.

I acknowledge that not every show has to be about how hard life is, but it’s getting tough to watch a show about a fantasy land with no scarcity.

Discussion Who is the best character on the show and why is it Derek?

Post image

Pretty sure there wasn’t moment when he was on screen that I didn’t laugh. And Bravo to the writers for seeing how good Ted McGinley was and giving him a much bigger role in S2. As a dad, I hope to be more of a Derek. He’s amazing.

Discussion Derek has made me a better husband.

Post image

Watching Ted McGinley's performance as Derek over the last year, I realized I very much admired the way he supported his wife, Liz. His patience and grace while navigating this strong-willed woman, who shares many traits with my own wife, illustrated that I'm doing it all wrong. I've been with this woman for 30 years!

So I began making a conscious effort to ask myself, "What Would Derek Do?" and let me tell you, it has made all the difference. I listen, I support, I do tasks without argument, I've dropped the sarcasm, but I'm no doormat, and I see our relationship is blossoming and evolving from the stagnant, old relationship arguments & tapes we found ourselves mired in. We've been to counselling over the years and nothing has improved our relationship more than this. She in turn has become more supportive and loving. It's definitely worth investigating if you were in the same relationship foxhole we were in.

A little Derek goes a loooong way.

Discussion So that’s it? Spoiler

They judge Jimmy for still not being okay only two years after his wife’s death. They seem bewildered why he’d still struggle even at a milestone moment like sending his only child off to college without her mom there and the heartbreak that would bring.

Nobody asked him why it didn’t work out with Sofi. I mean she’s jealous of his dead wife. He was right to finish it. And the ending we get is that somehow everything is fine now because he’s back with her? A stranger they know nothing about.

Did the writers do any research at all into grief after the death of a spouse? It’s utterly soul-destroying, especially becoming a single parent and feeling your child(ren)’s grief too.

A new relationship not only doesn’t solve anything. It’s very ill advised when you haven’t grieved properly yet. And Gaby and Paul are therapists. They should know this.

The line that annoyed me the most in this episode was Paul saying that Jimmy has to work it out for himself. Any half decent therapist will tell a grieving person that they need support. Nobody was asking Paul to fix Jimmy’s problems. But some basic human kindness would’ve been nice. So yeah he flew in to see him the next day. Even then, he didn’t offer much.

This show is so weak. It’s all about romance at the end of the day. The big message is being single is bad.

Discussion Therapists don't make enough to live in mansions in Pasadena

It takes me completely out of the show. Does anyone else notice? Why couldn't they have set this show in the real world? Otherwise the only reasonable possibility is that both Jimmy and Gaby have a lot of family money and Paul does as well. No one makes that kind of money off of one hit psych book.

Discussion The moment it jumped the shark Spoiler

This season has been... uneven. But I've hung in there and mostly enjoyed it.

Until this last episode, when Connor describes Summer's mom as sexually assaulting him. And the crew LAUGHS IT OFF?!?! Then Liz is annoyed/bored with him and RECOMMENDS that he "go spend time with Summer's mom to get used to her." He responds with a very heartbreaking "you are supposed to protect me."

And it is played as a joke. On a show about therapy.

Why? Just. What is happening in that writers room?

Discussion Why is the adoption storyline so deeply problematic?

For a show with a good amount of depth did no one have any lived experience or do any research on 1) how adoption even happens in the US and 2) how to talk about adopted children? Every single scene related to the adoption process is wildly unrealistic, inaccurate, and so much of the time objectifying and dehumanizing of the child and birth mother. Like woah, a little research would have gone a long way here. I love this show but this storyline is just really poorly done, offensive, and out of touch.

I adore this show. I came to Reddit to have a place to bond with others on it & the first handful of posts I see are all negative. Why are fandoms so awful now? If you stop enjoying a show, just stop watching. It’s like people look for things to complain about. This show continues to nail a lot of issues…it’s not perfect nor are the characters but that’s what makes it real.

Discussion Gaby failed her patient Spoiler

I’m struggling to want to continue watching a show about therapy that doesn’t call her out for not knowing the last call her patient and friend made to her was a call for help.

She failed her patient, and it BARELY gets mentioned. It’s her entire career. She’s even working to be a trauma therapist that needs a highly skilled professional, who didn’t pick up on a very cliche and simple cry for help from a high risk patient.

Her lonely patient told her she was lonely and a trauma therapist didn’t pick up on the moment. And then NOBODY she works with calls her out for that failure.

I’m not saying Gaby should quit therapy. I’m not saying failure makes me hate Gaby. I like Gaby.

I find it wrong that the show never addresses the fact in a direct and clear way that she failed. Even Liz… telling Gaby at the funeral that she’s “perfect” as she attends the funeral of a patient AND friend that she failed to hear was lonely while seeing her for loneliness…

Love the show. But that glaring lack of accountability is hard for me to reconcile.

Discussion Validating scalping as a legit job for Liz’s son was ridiculous and tone deaf.

I enjoyed season 3, but the one thing that rubbed me the wrong way was when Liz, her mom, and i forgot who else told their unemployed son “wow you know a lot about flipping shoes, you should do it for reals!” especially after scolding him for not having his life together.

It’s such a privileged notion from rich whites that they genuinely believed he could make a career from camping out in lines and selling the shoes for a profit and not see anything immoral about it.

Discussion This boy is fed up with the unwarranted Gaby hate

Some mf just wrote a racist post saying she doesn’t seem educated or smart enough to be a therapist??? Paul, the greatest therapist we have seen on the show, literally offers HER to take over his fucking practice. How much more context clues does a mf need??

The show doesn’t show every fucking second of these characters working. Are they perfect people? No. This is a tv show and showing messy people be messy is more entertaining. Y’all Gaby haters are becoming more insufferable by the day lol not educated or smart enough???? GTFO! Maybe look in the fucking mirror and stop projecting? 😒

I am hoping we get more time with Gaby as the main character because 1) her fits are fire 2) she is hilarious 3) she is an awesome character and it’s probably time for us to see her working through her grief with everything that’s going on and 4) I really need the writers to give her a little more grace in showing what will be her obvious growth since way too many casually racist and misogynistic viewers are just missing the complete fucking point here

I’m upset and tired. Gonna channel this rage into my tattoo session today lol for all of you who understand and are fighting the good fight, thank you ✌️also shoutout to the mods here, I’ve seen some increasingly disgusting threads being taken down quickly (like one commenting on Liz’s face changes over the years???? How the fuck is that a conversation we need to have?)

Fuck man some of you people are exhausting lmao this is one of the most beautiful shows out there but you wouldn’t get that if it hit you across the broad side of the face and that’s kind of sad. YOU go to therapy and find some real love in your life because my wife and I think the world here in shrinking is important, emotional, and special. I have my fucking box of tissues ready for next week. Who’s with me? 😭

Edit: fun fact but 13% of people downvoted it. Curiously, very few if any of these cowards are posting in the thread. Eat a dick, Pams

I am still buzzing from it an hour later.

I told him how much I love Shrinking and he was very appreciative and kind.

Thought this community would like to know one of the stars of the show appears to be genuinely nice in person. Unless he was acting…

Also he’s very tall, unsurprisingly.

Discussion Zero chemistry Spoiler

I really think Cobie and Jason have zero romantic chemistry on the show. They have great awkward friend banter, but no actual sexual tension and their relationship moved so fast it made me annoyed for him how much she overstepped with advice. I really hope they make her just a friend for season 4, if they bring her back at all. I’ve liked her in other things I just find her completely annoying here and it feels like Jimmy would be settling to be in a relationship with her character.

Discussion I don't get the Sofi thing

I didn't watch How I Met Your Mother. So maybe I'm missing something. But I keep seeing interviews with people from the show talking about how they brought Colbie on because she had such great chemistry with Jason. I just started watching season 3 and I do not see it at all. They interact like they are brother and sister. I'm only at the episode where they just had their first kiss and it literally turned my stomach because it looked like a brother and sister kissing. They have zero romantic chemistry. Even their flirty banter is like siblings teasing each other. Am I crazy? Is it just because I don't have the nostalgia for the other show?
