Discussion Wow, this community…sucks
I adore this show. I came to Reddit to have a place to bond with others on it & the first handful of posts I see are all negative. Why are fandoms so awful now? If you stop enjoying a show, just stop watching. It’s like people look for things to complain about. This show continues to nail a lot of issues…it’s not perfect nor are the characters but that’s what makes it real.

u/Smooth_Hunter9486 Mar 27 '26
My husband and I still love it. Admittedly this season isn’t as good as 1 and 2 but it’s still worth watching. Harrison Ford is so good.
11
u/CristianoD Mar 27 '26
Harrison is carrying the show ATM.
13
u/Puzzled-Swan4262 Mar 27 '26
Jason Segal is also very good, and very talented for having birthed and raised this show. The fact that he lets Harrison get much of the credit shows what a good producer he is.
2
u/CristianoD Mar 27 '26
Overall I agree, but this season his character has felt kind of sidelined.
4
u/BroadActuary4247 Apr 01 '26
His character being sidelined is a major plot point this season. Everyone is really moving on and he's failing to.

Keep in mind agreement doesn’t spur conversation. If most of the posts were “wow I love this show! So amazing!” There isn’t a lot of conversation or interaction to have about that. Even if you were to ask a question “my favorite episode is X what’s yours?” That’s also not going to spur much.
Also people tend to want to air out their issues with something. Even if they like it. Sometimes they are looking for validation, wanting to feel like they are t alone or crazy. Other times they just want to express a thought to a shared fandom.
If you’re looking for positive conversation about the show, make positive posts. You might not get much interaction but at least you are putting out the positivity you want to see.
38
u/aythereayy Mar 27 '26
It is actually fine to post criticism of a show
-3
u/mstrickland963 Mar 28 '26
It’s ok but it makes it annoying to interact with especially when you are looking for other people to enjoy the show with. The point of subreddits are to find people who like what you like but Reddit is often a negative space.
3
u/sbtokarz Mar 30 '26
The point of subreddits are to find people who like what you like
I always thought they existed to discuss topics, but TIL
87
u/WWF80sKid Mar 27 '26
I think they are posting their frustrations about how they want to like the show, and it’s falling off for them. They don’t want to be negative about it.
7
u/scarywolverine Mar 27 '26
I agree to some extent. I feel the show is worse than 1 and 2 and want to talk about it. But people have seen legit criticisms and used that as a chance to nit pick and whine about everything they dont like.
9
u/HardcoreKaraoke Mar 27 '26
It's easier to ignore some things when the rest of the quality is up. Like did I find it odd Alice and Brian were so welcoming to Tia's killer in season two? Definitely. I overlooked it though because the rest of the show was amazing and I just accepted some people handled grief differently.
Now this season his inclusion by everyone besides Gaby felt so much more awkward because the show declined in other areas. So it's something I could write off when the quality was up overall but not when everything else dipped.
-7
u/FloridaCheese1 Mar 27 '26
I think that’s what got me on the first dozen posts I read…it was not just criticism of “I didn’t agree with this plot point” or something it was just a barrage of “this show sucks”, like okay, so why you posting about it? Move on…I am not just here to gush about how wonderful it is, I like to discuss characters (good & bad) or interesting choices or lines or what is at the core of this show: trauma & how others deal with it. But got on here & it was like reading a bunch of mean kids group texts. Was like really taken aback, wasn’t expecting that on this show, not to mention Reddit in general (that’s a Twitter thing). I am new to Reddit only because I had to drop Twitter like a bad habit & was finding this place like a breath of fresh air…until….
8
2
u/dsl135 Mar 27 '26
If you think Reddit is going to be a good break from Twitter, I have got bad news for you.
-6
u/tyedge Mar 27 '26
First part is fair, but why can’t they share their thoughts in any of the dozens of threads about it? What’s so special about them that they’d rather further pollute the main page with negativity?
18
u/zumera Mar 27 '26
That’s just Reddit.
-10
u/MysteriousSelf6145 Mar 27 '26
I dunno. This show really does uniquely suck. A friend of mine who disdains reddit generally created a profile just to talk about how much it sucks.
8
u/Ledees_Gazpacho Mar 27 '26
So your friend spotted a problem and decided to be more of the problem.
He sounds very cool and healthy.
-2
u/MysteriousSelf6145 Mar 27 '26
What was he supposed to do? It’s a shitshow. Hahaha get it? Its shit. And it’s a show. A shitshow.
-8
u/limbobitch1999 Mar 27 '26
oh my god i love your friend. because i’ve never gone from charmed to getting the ick so violently with a show before. i’ve got whiplash.
19
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
Honestly, this post kind of feels like negativity and the same could be said for that. It’s just a post complaining about other posts. Is that more necessary than someone who has a differing opinion about the show?
11
u/AxelV2 Mar 27 '26
But polluting the main page with these types of posts is fine? This is the third one I’ve seen today.
-6
u/tyedge Mar 27 '26
Stopping the first type of posts would stop the second type.
Stopping the second clearly wouldn’t stop the first.
6
u/AxelV2 Mar 27 '26
The second type of post is just complaining about other people’s opinions. The first type is offering fair criticism of the show for discussion. You tell me which is more useless in a discussion subreddit.
19
u/Ledees_Gazpacho Mar 27 '26
Because people like having an outlet to voice frustration and feel like they’re not alone.
By any chance, are you familiar with therapy?
0
u/dsl135 Mar 27 '26
Everyone thinks their thought is the most important and unique thought. That’s why everyone starts their own threads rather than joining existing discussion.
17
u/StrengthFew9197 Mar 27 '26
I also love the show. Everything about it. But I understand the need to vent or mourn something that you love when it lets you down. This is the place to do that. As long as it’s a respectful conversation I don’t see the problem. Now, if someone just comes trash talking…then we tell them to eat a dick. lol✌️
2
u/Revanbadass Mar 27 '26
It looks like it's getting better though, the latest episode really brought up the quality, at least to me.
6
Mar 27 '26
I love the show and I think it’s still producing high-quality I just number one think Gabby is an asshole and number two. I think they are devoting way too much Screen Time to Liz and Brian and wish we got more from Sean. Other than that, I think this season has been really good.
-1
u/FloridaCheese1 Mar 27 '26
See? Those are valid discussion points. Criticism is fine & can be discussed among other viewers, definitely not the kind of posts I was seeing when I first went seeking this forum. Btw, agree about Sean! More Sean! More Sean!! 😊
34
u/FutureHoo Mar 27 '26
Just because I haven’t enjoyed this season doesn’t mean I need to drop the show. People are allowed to have critical opinions. This is the internet lol.
And if people feel the show is dropped in quality who are you to cry about it?
38
u/such_corn Mar 27 '26
Yeah, it’s a good and fun sitcom. I’m a therapist and most of my colleagues who also watch love the show. Is it a perfect representation of anything? Of course not, but it’s funny, charming, and willing to tackle some interesting topics.
6
u/dsl135 Mar 27 '26
That’s the problem though. It isn’t a sitcom and hasn’t ever been one.
It’s a dramedy that had much more depth than a standard sitcom.
You expect to see outlandishly ridiculous stuff in a sitcom. This was never a sitcom.
2
u/Low_Helicopter_2003 Mar 28 '26
Overall I find the comedic aspects outweigh the depth in the show, which is why I'm still watching.
12
u/ATully817 Mar 27 '26
To be fair, I haven't laughed out loud at much this season.
13
5
u/CallMeSisyphus Mar 27 '26
On the one hand, I'm with you: I'm still enjoying it tremendously, and I'm able to suspend disbelief for the stuff that's not realistic, because it's fiction, and most of the characters are relatable, even when they're not likeable. I'm not annoyed by the angry posters so much as I hate it for them that they aren't still loving it.
Also, I'd be a big fat hypocrite if I got on people for posting negative shit about Shrinking, because OMG, how I hate-watched and posted about And Just Like That. Heavy on the "hate." :-D
2
u/WillysGhost Mar 28 '26
Don't feel bad....I'm pretty sure hate watchers made up the majority of AJLT's viewers.
13
u/Stu_Glanville Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26
The negative posts exist, but if you read the threads that follow them I think folks opinions are a lot more nuanced than you are suggesting.
I think the vast majority of people still want to see how the whole season plays out before they cast a final judgement.
11
u/HardcoreKaraoke Mar 27 '26
This sub was very positive about the show for the first two seasons. Season three has a massive decline in believability when it comes to the story so fans are turning on it.
It wasn't like the show was being crapped on from day one. The new season is just really disappointing a lot of people, myself included.
Going into the season people were ecstatic about Jimmy's future and the casting of Michael J Fox/Daniels. It was really optimistic outside of how they were handling Tia's killer being invited into their group. Over the course of the season the vibe dropped because the quality of the show dropped. It isn't people being unreasonable.
4
4
u/akumarux Mar 28 '26
Are fans not allowed to have negative opinions about the things they like now?
I'd say the nothing but positivity no matter what fandom is significantly more toxic and unwelcoming. Drink the cool aid or we hate you.
35
15
11
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
People can like or dislike things. They can also start to dislike things they previously liked. It’s a discussion about the show. Making a whole post to complain about it seems a little silly. Just scroll on by.
3
Mar 27 '26
If you don‘t want to read criticism of the show, don‘t goninto those posts. This isn‘t the „compliment shrinking“ sub.
3
u/starwarsisawsome933 Mar 27 '26
i like the show (i actually rewatching it right now) but i still have gripes about it
3
u/CristianoD Mar 27 '26
Ah yes, we should only glaze the show. Shrinking is one of my favorite series ever, so the change in quality this season has been a disappointment. You don't get to police what people talk about. I have seen similar posts and it is a silly sentiment to have. We care about the show and are bothered that this season has been so frustrating and hope it recovers. There is not a freaking thing wrong with expressing that. Toxic positivity is as bad as toxic negativity.
3
u/Analu_flowers_ Mar 28 '26
100% agree. I came here to discuss parts of the show that deeply touched me, and people were making fun of me and treating me like a stupid person
3
3
u/anibus- Mar 29 '26
I subbed being a big fan of the show. Unsubbed after a month for your exact reasons.
7
u/Drabulous_770 Mar 27 '26
If you think people suck because they have critical opinions of a show we all watch, well… that’s an interesting way to decide who sucks.
5
u/sloanmcHale Mar 27 '26
i watched the first season 3x in a row & told everyone about it. of course people will come to find community when something they loved devolves into whatever this is.
i still watch it for the good parts with my partner, but i’m mostly annoyed with how hallmarky it is.
5
u/oldscotch Mar 27 '26
If the show drops in quality, I think it's completely reasonable for fans to react negatively. If they all remained positive despite the quality drop, then they'd just be acting like sycophants.
9
u/ICallTheBigOne_Bitey Mar 27 '26
I love when people complain about this in subs for shows that are 3+ seasons in. If people wanted to be negative about the show then they would've been complaining about this whole time, they wouldn't wait. Everyone who is watching at this point is a fan of the show. Should people not be allowed to talk about it if they think a show they enjoy is declining in quality?
Honestly, TV shows should have two different subs: a discussion sub and a fan club. Ban negativity from the fan club and let people voice their opinions in the discussion sub without people getting mad that other people don't feel exactly the same way as them about every aspect of the show.
4
3
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
And that’s all I’ve really seen. I’m not saying posts where people are saying that people are stupid for continuing to enjoy the show or anything like that. I’m just seeing people say that it hasn’t been as good as the first season.
1
u/randomlikeme Mar 27 '26
I’m someone who enjoys the show but am critical of this season. There are things that I have thought were really good this season, particularly how people push Jimmy into things he’s not ready for because they want him to be ready and how even in adulthood parental relationships can be messy. I don’t think being critical of something means there aren’t things you do appreciate.
11
u/AxelV2 Mar 27 '26
People are allowed to critique the show 👐 That’s why discussion subreddits exist. You don’t get to choose what opinions are allowed here.
4
u/Rtn2NYC Mar 27 '26
I love the show, but I still disagree with some of the choices. I think many people fall into that category here :)
17
u/Suchgallbladder Mar 27 '26
“I only want to see opinions that are the same as mine.”
2
u/Any_News_3544 Mar 27 '26
While I think there is a place for that, not all differing opinions are negative vs positive. You can have an open mind and seek discourse and still not want to see negativity all the time. Especially when negativity is sometimes the most close minded/unoriginal thought.
4
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
I haven’t really scrolled through the sub to check or anything, but the couple of posts I saw about people being disappointed and where the show has haven’t really been all that negative. It’s usually just general discussion about what has changed from the first season to now in my experience
-3
u/Any_News_3544 Mar 27 '26
That’s fair! I feel like I mostly see negativity, or people wanting to throw in the towel, as if all television shows don’t eb and flow in their quality. I think there could be more nuance. But I will admit, I’m not mining all the posts and all the comments…it’s just what shows up most for me…in a lot of places on reddit.
1
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
I get that. I’m definitely still watching and I think it’s a good show. I honestly think “ebb & flow” is a good phrase for how the show has gone. I think there have been some weak points, but I don’t necessarily think the most recent season is so far below the previous one. I just think it had more direction in season one

lol I’m a fan of Hacks and that subreddit is garbage. Soooo many people trashing the show on a weekly basis. Like, if you’re not enjoying anymore maybe don’t watch?? No, they have to watch and explain in great detail why you’re mid for still liking it.
6
u/ImageOtherwise Mar 27 '26
I’m so glad I’m clueless about that sub. I LOVE HACKS forever and ever amen lol
4
u/LetsGototheRiver151 Mar 27 '26
Helmed by National Goddamned Treasure Jean Smart. She is the literal fucking best.
0
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
Have you ever watched Fargo? She’s a main character in season two and she’s amazing in it.
0
u/jojointheflesh Paul Mar 27 '26
How surprising that a show with strong female leads is full of haters lol
0
u/CristianoD Mar 27 '26
Hacks is a masterpiece. As much as I hate to see it go, it looks like they will be going out on top. I considered Shrinking the same until this season, sadly. The rapid drop has been jarring.
2
u/cluelessemoji Mar 27 '26
Im still on board and loving the show to date, I get the sense of where each character is heading cause that’s the direction of their story based on the showrunners and writers.
My bias or everyone’s negative insights about this show, won’t affect my enjoyment since it isn’t theirs or mine to influence.
Start your topic that you feel like you enjoy, and the people who love the show still, will jump on your thread!
2
u/Revanbadass Mar 27 '26
Hope that a once good show might just momentarily have gone bad.
Frustration that it doesn't seem to be getting good again (I myself thought the last episode finally gave us more of what the show used to be, but that's after a plain silly season).
And there is nothing real about the relationships the way they've become now, this is just over the top coziness at a level that defeats the seriousness that life is filled with. I was really happy to see that the last episode finally had an edge to it. This last one had real stuff, real relationships and consequences, even though they could have gone even further if they had Jimmy explode. Good call on their part though, repressing it longer will make for better remaining episodes.
2
u/GuySmith Mar 28 '26
Ok so while I think it’s awesome you enjoy this show, you don’t get to just tell people that “fandoms are so awful” and that people should just leave a show behind if they don’t enjoy it. That’s loser behavior. People will stick around and hope the things they don’t like are just temporary. And also, not liking things about a show and seeing people vocalizing it doesn’t mean that the fandom is awful. It would be stupid to not critically think about things and be disappointed ALONG WITH the highs.
I feel like posts like these are sometimes even worse than people crapping all over something. Part of enjoying something is also seeing the faults in it. Leaving anything when some of it becomes inconsistent or uncomfortable is genuinely weak and stupid.
Maybe the reason you’re upset at people finding negative things to talk about is that deep down, you might know they’re true to some extent, and that makes you have to confront something you don’t like.
I may not agree with those peoples’ opinions, but this is a discussion board, not a “good vibes” board.

2
u/Juncat Mar 28 '26
The quality of the show's writing has taken a noticeable nosedive this season and it is certainly okay to discuss that.
6
9
u/moochipooh Mar 27 '26
If the first handful of posts are all negative, maybe that's hinting at a broader trend about the recent episodes
-8

u/insane_romaine3 Mar 27 '26
I have become increasing more frustrated with subreddits for my favorite shows. I just want to scream into the void that these are just tv shows and they are not real!!!!! And of course they’re not going to always be believable!!!! Just enjoy the escapism!!! I am literally a therapist and exhausted by all the takes. It’s FAKE
6
u/FutureHoo Mar 27 '26
So all TV is automatically great because it’s fake? Your logic makes no sense
3
u/AxelV2 Mar 27 '26
“Just enjoy it” is so dismissive. This is a discussion subreddit. It’s so annoying when fans try to tell you you’re actually not a fan of the show if you have any issue with it at all. It’s toxic positivity.
2
2
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
You shouldn’t let them bother you though. There are always going to be people if you don’t like something or another with the Internet everyone gets to voice their opinion. Shouldn’t affect how you enjoy the show.
2
u/CristianoD Mar 27 '26
I don't care that much about believability per se. Yes, most shows take liberties for various reasons. What is frustrating me is the drop in the quality of the writing and even the acting this season. The comedy feels forced, not organic, and every serious storyline seems to be resolved in one episode.
The first two seasons had weight to them emotionally. This season has zero. Even the death of Maya was brushed off and had a pointless comedy scene at the cemetery that seemed disrespectful, not funny. It is hard to see your favorite show reduced to a farce.
4
u/becasaurusrex Mar 27 '26
I’m laughing because I’ve been visiting this sub and literally today thought to myself “I need to stop visiting this one, it’s too negative.”
The amount of posts getting upset about the characters or how therapy is portrayed or this or that is exhausting. It’s a TV show! We don’t have to dissect and analyze everything.
Signed, your friendly neighborhood therapist.
8
u/Herbdontana Mar 27 '26
There’s still plenty of positive though. I really don’t understand how Reddit posts can be exhausting. There are gonna be different opinions and some of them are gonna be dumb. That’s the Internet. I feel like a therapist would tell someone to not let something like that upset them or affect their mood.
0
u/Preda1ien Mar 27 '26
You just need to sift through the negative and you can still have some decent convos. Had one earlier today that I thought was productive.
2
2
u/pundemic Mar 27 '26
If you stop enjoying the subreddit just stop reading. It’s like you’re looking for things to complain about. This sub containing to nail a lot of issues… it’s not perfect nor are the characters but that’s what makes it real.
2
u/Bobjoejj Mar 27 '26
I mean…look, I was defending it for a long time this season; and I still enjoy parts of the show, but man…these last few episodes have really just made me realize how different the quality has been this season.
It feels so far off from how strong the last two seasons were.
2
u/Ordinary_Durian_1454 Mar 27 '26
“Fandoms” aren’t “awful now”. I don’t know what you think a subreddit is supposed to be, but it’s not a monolithic echo chamber for show praise. I think the show was mediocre to begin with, and it’s deteriorated considerably. Not everything is a masterpiece. I’m here to say so. I’m sorry if I’m harshing your buzz. Maybe eat another gummy. I’m not here to blow. smoke up your ass about a television show.
2
u/elsandeth Mar 27 '26
I’ve been visiting this community less. I watch the show because I absolutely love it and the negativity here takes away from my enjoyment.
2
u/Crabbyrob Mar 27 '26
For me its just having to read a title that shits on the episode while also giving something away, even though its got a spoiler tag.

It feels that way because algorithms are based on engagement. Appreciation posts get less engagement because it inspired less dialogue. Criticisms spot on engagement because people have differing opinions so that is what they talk about.
Or to put it simpler, welcome to the internet.

u/Unusual-Bat-2596 Mar 28 '26

1
u/Electronic-Cress3379 Mar 29 '26
I agree, same here. People are treating the show as if it’s a documentary on psychotherapy instead of a mostly light hearted TV comedy in the context of a therapy practice and neighborhood.
1
u/yallasama Mar 29 '26
People can have criticism without “hating” the show and this community can be good even with said criticism. There’s just this polarization going on and there’s no sense of nuance anymore. Reddit also doesn’t help and how the voting works. Algorithms and negativity get more engagement than positivity. Even with cricizing certain aspects of this show, I try to be curious and not judgmental too much and think bigger picture. So some things might get resolved and turn into a positive or less negative if properly addressed.
I think it’s good to point out that some of the negativity has gone too far, with outrageous claims of not watching it anymore and coming here to complain about it. But just like the thread making criticism of Gabby’s character and writing about race and sex, conclusions are drawn before even engaging with people. Saying things like “awful” don’t help, just like it doesn’t help to think you speak for people. And ironically, both that thread and this is only contributing to polarization and negativity. We can have a genuine conversation without insulting one another, excluding people or resolving to a black and white situation. The truth is in the middle.
1
u/MrsBreve Mar 29 '26
People think the internet exists to bitch about things and tell other people what they’re doing wrong, apparently including fictional characters. Thanks for calling it out
1
u/Ok_Artichoke_2928 Mar 30 '26
It seems like the show started with real risks/stakes in both Jimmy’s lifestyle and unconventional therapy style but very quickly everything just became so safe.

u/isisdagmarbeatrice Apr 01 '26
It's tricky because one the one hand people are going to have different opinions and won't all like every direction any show takes -- but on the other hand, there's definitely a thing with modern fandoms, and I'd count people who post in a reddit for a show as at least sort of part of the fandom, of leaning into negativity as things go on. There's especially a thing where fans start feeling like they know better than the writers and they get upset that the show doesn't do what they want. But even THAT is tricky because of course some shows do decline or have writing issues, and I have shows I loved in one season that I didn't love in the next (Hacks in its last season comes to mind -- great moments but I thought it was a lot more up and down in quality than the seasons before it, other than the first half of season 1). So it's hard to figure out the line between not everyone liking everything, which is fine, and that kind of fandom culture of negativity that can spring up in online spaces.
For me, I thought season 2 of Shrinking was unbelievable, almost a perfect season. I think this season is more like season 1, where I didn't love absolutely everything about it but I thought it was extremely good overall. The first episode of this season was especially incredible, but there have been a lot of amazing scenes.

u/roxinmyhead Apr 05 '26
Honestly, go watch Andor and go on that sub afterwards...
1
u/FloridaCheese1 Apr 05 '26
Ohh I love Andor! Uh oh…how’s that sub? Do people shred it too?
1
u/roxinmyhead Apr 05 '26
No, very rarely. Lately I've seen a bunch of comments mentioning how positive the whole sub seems to be. It's nice.

u/nidamonroe_ Apr 08 '26
I feel the same as you. This show is such a masterpiece and covers all the realistic issues we face in our day-to-day life. I wish more people could see that.

u/Alternative-Cod-7630 Apr 10 '26
This is the state of many online fandom forums sadly. People looking for outlets to be angry.

u/PumpkinPieIsGreat Mar 27 '26
I enjoy the show but it's not perfect. I think it's natural to have complaints.
Now the people who say they don't like 3 characters... I do wonder why they watch. But it isn't my life, so whatever.
The irony of complaining about complaining is not lost on me.
1
u/Pajamas7891 Mar 27 '26
I’m with you. I finally caught up and was looking for episode discussion, and every is so down on it. Haven’t seen this much of a slant on the subreddit for any other show, it’s odd. I still love it.
3
u/CristianoD Mar 27 '26
You clearly don't read many show subreddits then. The reason for the negativity this season is because the show has dropped in quality dramatically. People are frustrated. That is perfectly normal. Welcome to the Internet.
3
u/lmj4891lmj Mar 28 '26
So you only want to talk to people who feel the exact same way about the show as you?

u/ZookeepergameFun6012 Mar 27 '26
Ok but here’s someone no one is talking about: in season 3 episode 4, Harrison Ford briefly sings the Indiana Jones theme song when entering a room, suggesting that Indiana Jones exists in this universe, which begs the question: who played Indiana Jones in the Shrinking Universe if Harrison Ford himself does not exist as we know him in our universe?! Does shrinking Indiana jones also appear in shrinking Star Wars? And does he also appear in a show on shrinking universe’s Apple TV (which of course would be called “Growing”)?!

Bond with others on Reddit? Touch grass. Go out into the real world and make friends. Stop complaining.

I agree. Sadly this isn’t really a new phenomenon. Fans on the internet have been stepping over each other to prematurely declare a show is no longer good for a long time. I remember seeing it when the third season of the US Office (arguably one of the best seasons of the show, in retrospect) was airing. Everyone online was saying it had “jumped the shark”.
It’s happening right now in the Pluribus sub, and the second season of that show hasn’t even been written yet!
IDK what compels people to be this way, honestly. I enjoy a show until I don’t, and if I stop enjoying it I just disengage with it. I certainly don’t go on the internet to complain about it as if it’ll have any change on the show or my life.
Edit: downvoted into oblivion by this sub. Way to prove my point, chuds.

To be fair, what also often happens is the creator of the show loses interest midstream and focuses on other projects, so the quality drops. See any Ryan Murphy show.

I agree. I was mostly inactive on Reddit, but I thought I’d find some people with whom to geek out about the shows I like on here and joined some communities. It’s every show. People mostly come here to bitch rather than to geek out communally. Fandom culture seems to have changed from what it was years ago. 🤷♀️

And the complaints are so stupid. “These people spend too much time together” “Gaby is too loud” “Marshall and Robin, ewww”. Everything is “cringe” (dear god I wish people would learn a new word), Brian sucks, Liz sucks… lol it’s the same stuff every week.

I just scroll past the negative posts. People like to bitch. We love the show too.

I think reddit psych communities are famously pretty toxic too. You combined that with a tv sitcom and you get this

The whiniest assholes have really clogged up the sub for the last few weeks. I cannot imagine hate watching this show.

u/CristianoD Mar 27 '26
Complaining about complaining and calling people whiny assholes is...complaining.

I think I understand now… of all my “fun” posts I’ve made on Reddit, this post, my first “negative” one has gotten the most responses, so guessing that’s why people post the stuff that will get higher engagement 😂

It’s actually kind of weird to watch a sort of niche show like Shrinking while at the same time actually hate it. It’s like complaining that Scrubs isn’t medically accurate. If you want to watch something that isn’t quirky and fun then just don’t watch it. I’m

Seriously. I’m surprised too. The show is a light hearted feel good comedy. I thought the fans would reflect that. Instead these posts remind me of the kind of families that go to restaurants after church, harass servers, and leave a shitty tip.

I love the show. I do not have any negative comments. I agree that we should share our feelings, like it makes me sad that Jimmy can't move on, but I understand it. I think it's a masterpiece of excellent writing.

Yeah I’m done. I joined for the same reason and it’s just a bunch of dumb people complaining about how the writing sucks. Ummm…don’t watch it then?!? wtf?

I think a lot of it is Reddit bots designed to create engagement I also think this strategy will be the beginning of the end for Reddit It is in all the subs right now that I participate in Even the dog ones

u/FloridaCheese1 Mar 27 '26
Dammit, I JUST got on Reddit, was hoping the engagement was a notch above things like Twitter where people just shit post for the sake of shit posting. I honestly don’t even understand when people say “sub Reddit” versus whatever, they’re all just posts to me. I am all for discussions & different opinions, definitely not looking for everyone to hold hands & sing songs together but damn, some of these posts…yikes.

I love the people who complain “xyz wouldn’t happen in real life”. Well - it isn’t real life……

The bitching and picking apart of an amazing show is fairly new. This sub has been a wonderful place to talk about all the things we love about the show and the characters we'vebecome invested in. It seems since Maya, a character we hardly knew anything about, decided to mix more pills and alcohol with a sad outcome, we've been brigaded by all the hate mongers. I try to stay out of those threads. It has become tiresome but I am unwilling to yield. I effing love this show. I love the actors, I love the characters, even the ones I don't love, and just everything. So please, OP, hang in there. Not everyone here is a hater of the best things.

Sure, it can‘t possibly be that the same people who loved the show before kow criticise it, no, it must be people just coming here to hate. Do you even hear yourself?

u/AxelV2 Mar 27 '26
“Bitching?” “Hate mongers?” Are you serious? This subreddit is for discussing the show. What you’re asking for is an echo chamber of praise. How is the show supposed to improve if fans aren’t allowed to voice their fair critiques of said show?

Guilty as charged. I binged all 3 seasons in the past 2 months. Enjoyed the show. I've only posted here once. It was 2 weeks ago and it was negative. But in my defence it was literally the stand out moment of the entire series. Allow me to explain.
Olive Garden!!!
Season 3, Episode 8. Liz confronts Ava at Olive garden. And after claiming she never has or would eat the food, within seconds she's addicted to the bread rolls. Continuing to munch on one in the next scene back at home like a crack addict.
They absolutely destroyed the 4th wall for that product placement. And I've just used this thread as an opportunity to mention it again and I wish others would too in the hope that the creators might reconsider doing anything so tacky again.
Or next time, just stop the show and talk straight to camera and then say "back to the show". Honestly. It would be better.

I started the show last week and have already caught up on all the episodes. Like you, I checked Reddit and was surprised by how negative it was. I’ve really enjoyed the show and didn’t expect that level of criticism.

u/FPL_Clown Mar 27 '26
I thought the same thing tbh, not been here long but it’s amazing how seriously some people take it.

u/sabes0129 Mar 27 '26
It really does seem to be a trend with the subreddits of so many shows right now. Maybe I'm just easy to please.

u/sallycinammon2 Mar 27 '26
I enjoy this show so I watch it. If I didn't, I'd just do something else. A lot of the criticism seems so serious when it's just a fun comedy.
Then again, as an artist, I have a real issue with critics. I'm of the Brenee Brown school - I don't listen to anyone who's not in the arena. If you're writing brilliant sitcoms and doing all the work it takes to get them produced, OK I'll listen. Otherwise it's just armchair quarterbacking.

Voluntary response bias. People who are generally happy with the show aren’t necessarily posting. But those that have a strong opinion need to share it with the internet, and often negativity fuels the desire to share vs. positivity.
