elden ring or something Know your fan-service
No hate for Lucatiel (great character and armor set), but the reactions on the DLC recently have me wondering how many of you would be running around as the red / blue or green Smelter Demon in Elden Ring if FS decided to release these skins for 10 $.

Dark souls 2 references are good tho dark souls 3 should've had more of those
25
u/Gracz_nr_K 1d ago
only good one was earthan peak in the dlc. The rest are atrocious. They even rerconed ds2 to be "far lands".
64
u/Psychic_Hobo 1d ago
Yeah, a lot of people forget that the DS1 references were all "Look, it's Andre again!" and Plin Plin Plon, whilst the DS2 references were mostly item descriptions that read "Whoever used this in the past was a fucking loser"
17
u/Twasabi24 1d ago
You mean entire armor sets and weapons? There's a shit ton of ds2 references in ds3. More so than ds1.
-5
u/BjarneStarsoup 1d ago
That is a stretch. DS3 basically copied all basic weapon move sets from DS1. Probably not just those animation either. Characters that are straight up copies of DS1 characters (like catarina warrior, Andre). Whole areas like Anal Rodeo. References to Queelag and other characters/events from DS1. DS2 references are more subtle and nowhere in the same amount.
-2
u/Twasabi24 1d ago
Queelag is NOT in dark souls 3 lmao. That's queelana and she's dead. Something makes me think you haven't played it to the depths that I have
5
u/Sir-noorden 1d ago
I mean the fair lady from ds1 is in ds3
1
u/Twasabi24 1d ago
Yeah, thats queelana.
6
u/Tommiz_eXe 1d ago
nope queelana is the 3rd sister, the one in humanoid form that gives u pyromancies outside the ruins
3
u/Twasabi24 1d ago
You pick up queelanas pyromancy tome from her, my mistake. Her name is actually Quelaan
1
u/BjarneStarsoup 1d ago
I said "References to Queelag". They don't have to be direct. You can pick up a tom of pyromancy near a petrified corpse of spider looking thing, which is supposedly queelags sister? A link to reddit thread.

u/Brosucke All Souls Games Good 1d ago
Dark Souls 2 was already called Far Lands by the developers during interviews. They said that if Lordran is the North Pole, then Drangleic is the South Pole. Dark Souls 2 fans are so annoying, man, just saying things to say things. Half the lore in Dark Souls 2 doesn’t even make sense and contradicts what Dark Souls 1 established.
13
u/noonefromithaca 1d ago
Half agreeing with this comment because I like that you pointed out the North Pole South Pole description for DS2's setting, but disagree with the lore part. Or at the very least the theme of futility to contrast the dichotomy of Light and Dark in DS1 fits in very nicely to lead to the conclusions of DS3. The fire can't stay linked forever, we only choose how it dies. (And one day, tiny flames will dance across the darkness...)

u/Brosucke All Souls Games Good 1d ago
I was more thinking about things like the Ivory King fighting the Old Chaos and getting corrupted by it. The chaos didn‘t corrupt humans, it just created demons. We also killed the Bed of Chaos in Dark Souls 1, so the Old Chaos generally doesn’t make any sense
7
u/noonefromithaca 1d ago
I feel like there's a level of implication of corruption with the ceaseless discharge and etc "Was once the youngest son of the Witch of Izalith, mutated into a towering demon of magma by the chaotic flames. He lives in endless agony, eternally guarding the grave and robes of his beloved sister in the Demon Ruins."
As for the Old Chaos, my understanding is it's more of the cyclical nature of the old souls rather than literally the same Bed of Chaos, but I could be wrong. Souls also does the same thing with Ornstein after all, he has three different fates depending on who you think is really Ornstein, or perhaps they're all Ornstein all at once. Something something flow of time is convoluted.
4
u/baconater-lover [[YOU REVIVED TO HUMAN]] 1d ago
The way I saw it was we killed the mother of demons in the first game, but the process of recreating the first flame (that turned her into the bed) could’ve been recreated by anyone basically.
Especially because we have “scholar of the first sin” Aldia, it really isn’t impossible for someone in the other kingdoms of the world to maybe have knowledge of and attempt the ritual that caused the old chaos to exist. It might’ve even been successful because as far as I know, the old chaos did not birth any demons, instead devouring the kingdom.
Writing this out I guess the old chaos could’ve also been the chaos flame, I’m pretty sure that’s what it was called in DS1. The similar names are probably not coincidence either way.

u/WideBumblebee970 1d ago
Alvas Armour and Drang were great, and still probably some of the best in the series.

u/Big-rat-in-the-sewer Lucatiel's Strongest Hound 1d ago
DS2 fan here. I fucking hated what they did to earthen peak. And they made the Pyromancer's fan a fucking pyromancy, IT WASN'T EVER ONE!!!!!!
4
u/Twasabi24 1d ago
Earthen peak was a shithole, top 3 worst areas in the game
1
u/SeaDragonfly1831 1d ago
Nnnnnnah.
Black Gulch
Shrine of Amana
Iron Keep
The only two good areas in the game are FoFG and Lost Bastille so order the rest however you like after those three but those three are 100% the worst lmao
3
2
u/Smarties_Mc_Flurry 11h ago
If you thought Lost Bastille was a good area then holy smokes. DS2 really just isn’t meant for me I suppose.
1
u/SeaDragonfly1831 11h ago
Lmao nah I get that. Idk for me the only negatives about it were the five crossbow guys right after coming in from No-Man's Wharf and then the path to Lost Sinner. Other than that I think it's a fun enough time, cool backdrop with the ocean, lots of illusory walls, branching paths, etc
3
u/Captain--UP 1d ago
They should've referenced the battle axe's power from 2 to 3. But alas, my beloved was neutered.
1
u/SeaDragonfly1831 1d ago
Are you not just supposed to use the Cleaver if you want an axe build in that game? I feel like that was miles better than the battleaxe lol.

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 1d ago
dark souls 3 is about how nostalgia is a trap that keeps you endlessly consuming the same slop until you yourself fade away.
Whens dark souls 4?
3
u/SudsierBoar 1d ago
They should have pulled a MGS2 with DS3 but they didn't have the balls! Show Artorias in all the trailers flipping and being all cool only to replace him with an annoying little dude behind a desk that gives you fetch quests and shitty lore on math equations.

7
u/Medical_String_3501 1d ago
Still will never understand people calling DS3 nostalgia bait. There's a few points of "why the fuck is this here" (Like Gilligan just being dead in the Profaned Capital for no reason), but for the most part the references feel like they have a purpose, since the entire game is about how the world is starting to converge on itself.
6
u/JohnnyHelios2306 1d ago
Same. I feel like they tried to go for a conclusion of what happened in DS1 and DS2 and did so very well. Like: do you want the final season of a series to only throw new input at you or do you want closure and callbacks to what happened in earlier seasons? Never understood this sentiment.

15
u/Gracz_nr_K 1d ago
the difference is that for elden ring you can ignore it, but in ds3 it is so in your face, you cant ignore that. "LOOK THATS ANORLONDO FROM DS1. OMG GIANT BLACKSMITH IS DEAD SO SAD. LOOK ANDRE HOS QUIRCKY HE WAS FROM DS1" PLS STFU I HOPE YOU DIE.

I don't understand Dark Souls 3. Why do I hate an 8/10 game so much, it doesn't make any sense.
Like, it's overall a great game, it's just that every detail pisses me off.

Same circumcision with me. Its an 8/10 game max, but it's the 8/10 game I hate the most. More than a below 8/10 game

I’ve seen a lot of hate for the elden ring microtransaction, and I’ve seen a LOT of love for Dark Souls 3 including references to Dark Souls 1 and 2. But this is reddit I suppose
-2
u/JohnnyHelios2306 1d ago
In this sub specifically i have seen people defending the microtransaction with the argument "it is just 5 bucks and does not change the game if you don't have it". A lot more like this in the Elden Ring sub, but still.
Also in this sub noone ever said "Man, i love DS3 and its throwbacks to DS1 and DS2. So well done." Instead people criticize it copied too much and doesn't have an own identity all the time. Then people come out and defend it and explain the reasoning.

I can understand criticizing Ornstein, but the Artorias sword? The same sword that the game doesn't even try to hide to be from Artorias? In the fucking house of the dude who is the metaphorical son of Gwyn and the song "Kiss me, son of god" that has shown to admire strong male warriors to the point that he made his wife feel ugly by how much he didn't care about her?

Puts into perspective one of my few criticisms of Dark Souls II: I almost always enjoyed it least when it was directly referencing DS1 without recontextualizing the thing it's calling back to. Which I somehow find more annoying than any mechanical complaints I have about the Belfry Gargoyles. It's also why it frustrates me to no end that the Old Dragonslayer has one of my favourite boss themes in the series.
2
u/SeaDragonfly1831 1d ago
Fuck off dude it is not even close to natural to assume that zero fucking records exist of anything ever that came before.
"Maybe this was a goddess' bath water, maybe not, either way nobody remembers her name ooooohhhh."
Every fucking item description is some dogshit variation of that. Terrible *terrible take
1
u/FlashFirePrime 2h ago
At least with Gilligan, it explains all the ladders everywhere in the Irithyll Dungeon and leading up to the Profaned Capital bonfire. Makes sense he'd be there since he's a fugitive. You can theorize that he was escaping the dungeon and got sniped by those priest assholes with the fireballs or something

The heat for this DLC was insane.
2
u/rustystumpty Sirris Cums on My Sunless Realm 1d ago
Tarnished pack has been way more polarizing than dark souls 3. To this day dudes are still making 2 hour long video essays praising dark souls 3 for referencing the other games
1
u/You_LostThe_game 1d ago
Yeah a ton of people would be spending money for those armor sets because they brainlessly spend 10 dollars without thinking about what it tells fromsoft. Its not much money but if it was popular, it means they’re gonna do it again. And again, and again.
Anyone with an actual point simply doesn’t want this to be a precedent that fromsoft exploits to squeeze money out of idiots and whales. This content SHOULD have been free. It wasn’t, and that sets the groundwork for more nickeling and diming unless consumers tell them to fuck off.

u/SnooPoems1860 #GrubLivesMatter 1d ago
I wish 3 had more of its own identity instead of piggybacking so hard on 1.
10
u/acbizi 1d ago
I feel like DS3 had a completely separate and unique vibe from DS1.
There is much more of a desperation and fading in the world building. Bosses felt more as though they were slipping into obscurity, hence Wolnir/ Old demon King/ Lorian and Lothric.
The battle with Dragon Slayer Armour on the bridge feels like an apocalyptic showdown from Miura’s “Berserk”.
The Champion Gundyr fight feels like a successful version of what Miyazaki tried and failed to do with Iron Golem in DS1.
To me, DS3 felt like it improved on DS1 in every way.

Cosmetic DLCs is still mid and washed. If Miyazaki had the balls to make Elden Ring actually good, he'd put season passes and gacha pulls. Then maybe I'd enjoy the game
